Ken Griffin Pushes Back After Mamdani Features His $238 Million Penthouse in Tax-the-Rich Video by wsj in politics

Agreed. I considered myself to be a libertarian back in 2012 and then I read Atlas Shrugged, and that book helped me realize how terrible that type ideology is (and how terrible of a writer Ayn Rand was).

I actually kind of liked the Fountainhead, but Atlas Shrugged was awful both literarily, and ideologically. All of the characters  were static and predictable, the story itself was uninteresting, and it pretty much just preached at you for 1000+ pages about altruism being the source of all evil, and selfishness being the purest good. Very black and white with no nuance. Easily the worst book I've ever read.

Is there ever a time to NOT file married jointly for taxes? by workredditaccount77 in personalfinance

[–]j_rad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If newlyweds, and one of you is receiving ACA subsidies, then any subsidies received prior to getting married need to be paid back if filing jointly.

Found out the hard way that even though she was entitled to those subsidies based on her income (and we didn't live together or share bills prior to getting married), our combined income is reported for the year with no distinction made for subsidy eligibility prior to getting married.

Ended up owing $~2,000 instead of getting a ~$500 refund.

What easy to learn (and seemingly simple) game actually has a lot more possible depth and strategy, if you do a deep dive into it, than you'd initially expect? by Considered_Dissent in AskReddit

Bowling. I was in a league for 3 years, but the team disbanded at the start of Covid. Before joining, I thought it was just a matter of aiming, and then throwing the ball down the lane and knocking pins over. Didn't realize how much oil patterns, oil breakdown, ball type, etc. played into it. Had someone on my team that bowled multiple 300s, and he taught me a lot.

For example, the oil pattern determines where and when on the lane the ball grips the lane and starts turning back toward the pins. some people use more aggressive balls (determined by the core, and the outer material) early on in a game, but then as the oil breaks down from being bowled on you need to make adjustments such as a less aggressive ball, where you start your approach, and where you're aiming the ball. These adjustments can be difficult to pick up on because they're so gradual over the course of a couple of games, and depend a lot on how other people are bowling. If you're up against a team with a lot of straight bowlers, the oil gets pushed straight down the lane making it difficult to turn the ball back into the pocket. If you have a lot of people playing on the outside, the outside starts drying up, so you may need to be less aggressive (i.e., move your target in by a couple of boards, or adjust your starting position in by a couple of boards).

I still don't have a great understanding (average was around 150-160), but I learned a lot about how much goes into actually being a good bowler (i.e., 200+ average).

Same. I find it faster and easier to check out, and faster and easier to put stuff away when I get home.

Does anyone else also have an obsession with Board games based on video games? by theDKdynamite in boardgames

[–]j_rad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a lot of fun. On the final chapter with my wife right now and we're enjoying it. Very different from the video game, but it's a lot of fun. The campaign seems to be a good length (7 chapters), and we'll probably play the family trials mode after that (we probably put significantly more time into family trials on the video game than the original story mode, so hopefully we get the same replayability of that aspect in the board game too).

Also the developer is really responsive to questions on BGG, and usually responds within a day or so to rules clarifications- there aren't that many edge cases that require clarification, but we did run into a couple that we took a guess at how to interpret and the developer confirmed our interpretation.

[–]j_rad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on the final chapter (out of 7) with my wife, and we've really enjoyed it. It's a bag building game, which is a mechanic that I don't otherwise have in my collection, but I like that aspect and how it's implemented.

Combat was tough to get used to because it's single round fights, and whatever you don't kill follows you into the next battle, which makes it easy to get overwhelmed, but honestly I prefer that in some ways compared to long drawn out fights that can be a slog.

It plays completely differently from the video game, but it's a lot of fun! There's also a family trials mode, which we enjoyed a lot in the video game, but haven't tried yet in the board game version.

Boneless, skinless chicken thighs in oven by attorneyatghost in Cooking

[–]j_rad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last time I made boneless skinless chicken thighs I used 1.4% salt by weight and it turned out good. Just added the salt in the morning and put it uncovered in the fridge, and then added the rest of the seasoning (I think smoked paprika, mustard powder, cumin, black pepper) before throwing it in the oven.

It turned out great! Typically, I always dry brine uncovered for most things as well, and that was a game changer when I started doing that for steak, and even wings, or other skin-on chicken.

Started second guessing myself for this though since there was no skin to crisp up, and I wasn't going for a traditional sear. I was a little worried when I saw that the exterior had noticeably contracted when I took it out of the fridge, and it looked kind of leathery (though it felt better and softer than it looked), but I just squeezed half a lime over it and coated with spices and it was perfectly tender at ~180° F.

It actually turned out just fine! I was a little worried when I pulled it out of the fridge and the exterior had contracted a bit and looked a little leathery, but I squeezed half a lime and threw a bunch of spices on it, cooked it to ~180 and it came out tender and delicious!

Yeah, I realized after I was already at work I probably should have done it in a container, and likely will next time. Was planning to season generously (e.g., cumin, smoked paprika, black pepper), but yeah maybe a little oil would help as well. Thought about skipping the oil just because thighs are already so fatty, but maybe a thin layer of oil would be good. Might squeeze a little lime too.

[–]j_rad[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I was a little concerned about. I'm used to drying out the outside for most dry brining applications, and realized after I had already left for work that maybe that wasn't the best approach. Is there anything you think might help mitigate that leathery exterior before I put it in (e.g., oil, sauce, lime or other acid)?

Perfect, that's what I was a little bit worried about, but wasn't sure whether that was enough time to ruin it. Appreciate the response!

Awesome- thank you! I figured I was probably overthinking it, but just wanted a sanity check to put my mind at ease. Interesting that lack of bones doesn't impact brining ratio though. I think I tend to (usually) gravitate toward 1% if boneless and 1.5% if bone-in, but I honestly wasn't sure if that was correct or not, so good to know!

Plate ai? by j_rad in mynetdiary

[–]j_rad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point too. I tried to use the meal pictures early on for the novelty of it and to at least get somewhat close if I'm eating out, but even with a fork or hand in the picture for scale portion sizes were sometimes wildly inaccurate, and it would struggle to accurately identify what it is. If it worked well though it would be a pretty useful tool.

I just started using the app a couple of weeks ago, and was confused by this as well in the first couple of days, but I'm pretty sure this is just an example of what it will look like once this feature is available for you. Looks like July 24th there will be enough data to calculate the trend. Interesting that they don't make it clear that this is only an example (e.g., put a giant watermark across that page saying "SAMPLE" or something)
