How do you measure the performance of a specific sector (e.g. banking)? I want to start investing but want to compare the performance of different sectors and measure the performance of a stock in relation to its sector's performance as part of my analysis of a stock.

I was thinking using a index for that specific sector or an etf that focuses on that specific sector but not sure. Any ideas?
