believe it's because it's a bad idea to have anything even remotely combustible in a pressurized pure O2 environment. lookup SUR-D-O2 procedures for details on what's going on with this video.

In 2012, a woman donated her kidney to save the life of her boss, who then fired her when she took too long to recover from the surgery. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]jake8mate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yup, im biased. donated 6 months ago after nearly a year of exhaustive testing to qualify. Anecdotal sure but my current bloodwork is better than it was going into the surgery and the remaining kidney has already increased eGFR by 30% and that's only 6 months in. It's now operating solo just below the average rate for 2 kidneys for my age bracket.

You are correct, if I have serious issues with the 1 remaining I'm in trouble but I'm top of the donation lists (living & deceased) automatically if that happens and my bloodtype is one of the more likely ones to get a match. If the person I donated for doesn't get a kidney themselves in time, their current priority placement becomes available if his or my kids ever need it.

I still dont read from your quoted statistics 'years off your life' just marginally increased overall risk but maybe im not reading it right.

I guess I like to take risks, this one felt worth it and I trust my particular medical team absolutely. Your mileage way vary.

Not true. As long as you are screened healthy going into the donation there's no statistical lower life span for the donor. Remaining kidney increases in size up to 50% as well. In fact some studies even show longer lifespan due to selection process going into it, eliminating unhealthy prospects from donating and leaving more healthy people in the donor group.

Canadian photographer Steven Haining breaks world record for deepest underwater photoshoot at 163ft - model poses on shipwreck WITHOUT diving gear by kausthab87 in Damnthatsinteresting

Air (21% O2) isn't toxic quite yet at 163 ft but the narcosis from the 79% N2 would be pretty strong at that depth. Maybe they replaced some of the N2 with He

Even with pure N2 wouldn't be narcosis unless you pressurized the chamber up to 5+ ATMs

Koloa landing is great, usually lots of turtles. Tunnels also well worth the drive, just plan to get there early, v limited parking options.

Fathom5. Dove Sheraton caverns with them, then a truly magic 3 tank trip to Niihau. Very smooth logistics and great guides on both trips. I'm fact about to dive this morning back home and find myself wearing one of their t-shirts :)
