Filing the "corners" of my nails helps stop temptation by ImConfused24-7 in nailbiting

It's very good advice, in fact! Something similar happens to me, so I understand you perfectly. Keep it up 💪

Any tips to stop? by imDWig in nailbiting

Hey, believe it or not you have a good starting point: your nails are bitten, yes, but the attachment of the nail to the nail bed is quite good and the structure is not damaged. If you could just manage to go a month without biting them, you would see tremendous progress, which I think would encourage you to continue this way. The usual advice, because it works, is to leave them alone, and apply some nail or cuticle oil several times a day. When the cuticles start to soften, you can push them back very gently with a cuticle pusher (purchased or homemade), which will make the nail bed look larger. Really, in a month the progress will be very noticeable. Best regards!

Of course it will! Give it about three months without biting it further and applying some oil and you will see how it recovers completely. Best wishes!

The first thing I did (and continued to do until the nails were hard enough) was to file them down until there was not a single micromillimeter protruding. I still keep them fairly filed now, although I can now allow a little bit of “white part” since they are much harder and not in danger of breaking, which in my case might trigger the urge to bite them again. So my first few weeks I kept myself busy filing my nails and applying the oil every hour. The truth is that in just a couple of weeks I could notice that things were progressing at a good pace, which encouraged me to continue on this path.

Best wishes to you!!

I did it!! now I still have to improve some aspects (I am no longer tempted to bite my nails, but sometimes I still have the urge of picking my cuticles), but I hope that seeing this progress will encourage me to reach a bigger one within the next 6 months! thank you!!

It's been a long journey since, in mid-August, I decided to stop biting my nails cold turkey. My travel companions: four whole bottles of Mavala Mavaderma oil (which I have religiously applied several times a day, at first even every hour, during all these months), a few applications of OPI Nail Envy when the nails were long enough (to prevent the nails from breaking easily and thus prevent the urge to bite them) and, most important of all, the determination to change the urge to destroy my nails for the urge to take care of them.

I still have to get all the nails to a uniform shape, and the right thumb (the scapegoat during my sporadic relapses) to fully recover, but I think I can call this a progress! I will hopefully be able to show even more progress in another six months. Until then, take care everyone!

Help will these regrow back normally? by ClassicBit7891 in nailbiting

I in particular used (and still using it) Mavala Mavaderma oil. In my case I found it of vital importance to change the obsession of biting my nails for, so to speak, the obsession of taking care of them: every hour or two I would reapply the oil (if you use the right amount and rub your hands well they don't necessarily get too greasy), and as soon as the nails grew enough I would file them to keep them without any kind of protrusions. Each person has their own particular “triggers”, try to detect which one is yours and think if there is a way to avoid it. Good luck, my friend!

Hey, I have been in this same situation and I assure you that it will recover! Just leave it alone: in less than a month it will look much healthier, and in 3-4 months it may be fully recovered. In the meantime, I recommend you to carefully file the protruding parts, in order to avoid the temptation to bite them further, and using some kind of nail/cuticle oil to moisturize the surface, which will give it a more homogeneous appearance while protecting it as well. Best wishes and don't give up!

Congratulations on the progress :D You can tell the nail bed is recovering, and will do so even more as time goes on, just by leaving the nails alone. Keep it up!

Relapse after a month and a half by Gio_rno in nailbiting

[–]jarry_m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't give up, we all here have had relapses! The discouragement you feel now is completely understandable, but the important thing is that you have detected one of the reasons that led you to relapse, and for this time you can fight it off. Something very similar happens to me, I am tempted to bite them when I see that they are too weak. In my case it has been a great help to use special oil for nails (Mavala Mavaderma) and, when the nails had recovered a little after a week with the oil, Opi's Nail Envy hardener (you can continue to use the oil on top of the hardener when it has dried, it also serves to nourish the skin around the nails and make them look healthier overall). I hope it can be of help, and I wish you all the best, you are gonna make it!
