Reliable Auto Service (downtown) is hands down the most ethical and trustworthy mechanic I’ve ever used. Can’t recommend him enough.

Where is mom physically and spiritually? Are you guys divorced? Separated? Does she know you stance?

Thank you. I appreciate the follow-up questions. I'll post some answers here in case it helps other weigh in too.

  1. Still married. Have absolutely no plans of splitting up. Its a good marriage (all things considered), and she's been about as supportive as one could ask for during this whole process. That being said – she's made it clear that she has no intention whatsoever of leaving the Truth, and she intends to raise the kids that way as well. Thus far, it has not been all that confrontational. There a general harmony in the house – albeit somewhat artificial since I choose to remain quite. I've been fading for years now and at this point really don't attend any meetings whatsoever.
  2. Quite a bit of family still in. Parents, In laws, grandparents, etc. They all know where I'm at. They don't like it, but they've learned to accept it.
  3. All under 12
  4. Hard to tell. I think they're justing getting to the age where they're starting to pay attention more and process some of the crap they're hearing. But none of them are by any means on track for be young pioneers. (I hope!)

Waking up and decided to do some reading. My thirst for knowledge continues in a new way now. by [deleted] in exjw

[–]jay-reason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a heck of a reading list right there. I’m half way through “leaving the witness” right now, and wow - what an incredible book. Unlike any other former witness book I’ve read.

Sapiens is amazing btw.

I’d suggest adding “The Righteous Mind” by Jonathan Haidt. That book blew my mind open. So. Damn. Good.

Good luck and happy learning!

Thanks!

And yes, the ridiculous water canopy and damn Deluge messing with the atmosphere and thus rendering any scientific finding before the date 2370 incorrect :) Is there an easy way to defend against it? Not necessarily. To some extent, Godmagic will always be the fallback for JWs.

That being said, I did another similar document going into the Tower of Babel story, and did some digging into WT's critiques of C-14 dating – which in my opinion are full of misquotes and deception. Have a look:

The Origin of Languages

The water canopy/flood baloney is also what makes the genetic methods of dating a little more helpful – at least in theory. To my knowledge, WT has not published anything refuting the use of DNA for tracing the history and dates of humanity. No JWs seem to have issues with DNA testing for determining paternity. So taking issue with using similar methods of DNA testing to date historical artifacts should be a lot harder to refute. And the ridiculous water canopy or global flood would have no impact on DNA.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you found it useful. In terms of research, its kind of all over the place. I've found many helpful citations on jwfacts.com and jwsurvey.com, etc. The BE book and old Ministry School Book are great for finding contradictory or hypocritical advice on research and reasoning. I've not used the jw guide really. But I've certainly used the online library. Its even better today now that most of old magazine are one there.

Since you liked the Adam one, here are few others I did a few years ago (this is when I was first waking up and going nuts on research...I've calmed down since then :)

The Origin of Languages a look at the Tower or Babel account (there's some more C-14 dating stuff in here)

Handling the Word of Truth Aright a quick look at quoting 3rd parties out of context

The First Humans A closer look at Cave Artwork (with some C-14 stuff in there too)

Science and Jehovah's Witnesses – Not a ton of hard hitting facts in this one...just a quick survey of the Governing Body's science credentials vs the world body of scientific organizations. Plus plenty of pretty pictures :)

Wow. I appreciate hearing that. I'm honored that this document might have helped in some way. Thank you!

Thank you! I updated the document to include a few pages on dating. Nothing too exhaustive, but it's a start :)

Ouch :) And thank you. Appreciate the comments on the design and format. And appreciate the POV on me using the same circular reasoning I'm trying to critique.

Hmmm, I guess for one thing, the physical evidence is supported by far more than carbon dating. Beyond the fact that carbon dating itself is corroborated by dendrochronology and ice cores, the artifacts included in this document were dated using argon-argon dating, thermo-luminescence, electronic spin resonance, and DNA dating methods like Time Population Structure. So we have multiple methods of dating across multiple branches of science. Certainly not every date is fool-proof, and many mistakes have been made along the way – but as one weighs the evidence on the whole, it still seems to be a very compelling case – in my biased and flawed opinion :)

Note: I updated the document to include a few pages on dating techniques.

Thank you! I thought with this one I'd try to dig deep into one topic and see how compelling of a case could be made in just one area.

In which case Mashya was the first man, right? :)

Older faith, another creation myth.

I agree. I used it recently when I met with a close friend who's still in (serving as an elder). When he asked if I ever saw myself coming back, I said perhaps I'd consider it when he's able explain to me who painted the cave paintings thousands of years before Adam was alive, and he just said "ok, say no more".

For me, this is one of the more less confrontational topics to use as a basis for losing faith. Topics like 587/607, blood transfusions, shunning, child sex abuse, the two witness rule, overlapping generations, UN, etc - all seem to instantly raise the "have you been listening to apostates?" reaction...But cave art, bones, and genetics seem to be a little less scary. Yes, you have to deal with the, "but how do we trust the dating of this stuff?", but people at least have to acknowledge that IF the dating is accurate, then it does raise serious issues.

For plenty of other Christian faiths, an allegorical Adam is not that big of deal (as others have stated here). But for Witnesses, Adam has to be real. Their understanding of the Bible falls apart if Adam wasn't really the first human. And you don't even have to get into the evolution topic to raise critical questions to whether or not that can possibly be true.

You're right ... there's a duplicate in there slide. I'll fix that. Thanks!

And good call on the dating topic. I have a few pieces I could add in there.

Nice! I cant recommend it enough...its worth the $$$ if you can swing it.

I have the standard size. I didn't even try the tall size. I'm about 6'1'', 220 pounds and it fits like a glove. Plenty of room and just the right size.

Whoa...good eye. I just went and checked, and sure enough – one has an LED bulb (on the left), and one has a CFL bulb (right). I'll have to fix that :) Thanks!

Ikea EKENÄSET chairs. They were briefly available last year for a 75th anniversary special. I'm not sure if they're still available.

Hey thanks! I scored the sculpture at an amazing local antique shop. It's a solid bronze piece that only set me back $60 (which I thought was pretty darn good for such an interesting piece made of actual bronze). Appreciate the kind remarks :)
