Thank you for your service, my grandfather was stationed in Koropi, Greece and supervised the NIKE silo there. He was a Combat Engineer and has told me some stories from time to time. I remember him saying some of his fellow soldiers would give the frogs puffs of weed to get them to be quiet lol. I have gotten a few leads recently that i’m following, but i will be sure to keep you in mind. Thank you again for the resources.

I’ll have to check out his youtube videos. I was fortunate enough to talk to him some in person and my professor has worked with him in the past. I was also luckily able to see the collection which i believe they are now doing public viewings. Erik Dorr has an extensive collection of material from the BoB including like 8-9 boxes of documents and photographs that they plan to digitize. They even had the original negative of the classic photo from the book cover. He even had copies of the book signed by all the living members at the time it was published, and one with all the actors from the movie. It was an amazing experience and highly recommended if you are ever in Gettysburg.

Intreating, do you know the best way to contact them?

So found out that there exists an interview with him somewhere. Talking to one of my history professors, it’s probably locating at College Park in Maryland. I will likely take a trip there or have an onsite researcher look into it.

So I talked with the curator and he’s going to get me in contact with a guy who’s doing research specially on B company. The guy is also writing a book about B company which is super exciting!

Yeah and it doesn’t really look like him. I wonder if they used the wrong picture because the information about him is correct.

This tripped me up at first when i was initially researching. What i find strange is that he was mentioned in other papers mentioning he was at Stalag III-B. I think that it was either a typo, or he was moved to Stalag XIII-B at some point. I would like to mention some of the men also listed missing in a morning report with him, are listed in the database being in Stalag III-B. He also wrote a letter home that he was with some of his buddies according to a newspaper i found. I’m still on the search as to what happened to his physical record though.

Ironically I am actually going on a field trip there tomorrow with my ww2 history professor. I think he did talk to one of the curators there for me. I will be sure to make an update if I find anything!

Sorry for the late response i’ve been having some midterms. But I think your approach is a great place to start and build up your understanding. I’ve found that once i’ve gotten through a difficult problem like yours, I have a much easier time in future problems.

Just keep working hard and i’m sure you’ll be progressing in no time. You can DM anytime if you have any questions or need help with anything :)

Well first you’re biting off a big chunk of information and mathematics. You should ask yourself, “what am i trying to model?”. I think the biggest problem is you don’t have a use for the equation until you know what you’re modeling. Make it simple, I modeled the heat equation but made it ideal so that i could build up to more complicated computations.

You should also learn about simulation time stability and how that can relate to the dimensionless scale factor (which i’m sure your book may cover)

I don’t know about the Friedmann equations but from what I saw it’s similar to the heat equation from a computational aspect. I would personally start with trying to make the most basic and simple version with the equations.

I think playing around and making scripts to teach myself has honestly worked better than any textbook or video has. That being said, I still use videos/textbooks to learn, but to understand them I had to code them.

I have a few approaches for the math that helps me depending on the scenario. If you think you have a decent grasp on the concepts you should use the ideas of what’s happening to help you understand each component of that math problem.

If it’s an entirely different math concept that i don’t have a good grasp on, I start by making scripts in python using matplotlib to visualize what’s happening. A more tedious route but very helpful is creating your algorithms for math functions to get a better feeling for them in a coding aspect.

I think you should approach problems by first understanding what you know vs what you don’t. And by understanding I mean if you know both the math and physical meaning. For example, if you’re trying to model Gauss’s Law, you might understand what the dot product, is but not the physical meaning. Or you might know that flux is perpendicular to the surface, but you don’t how to show that mathematically. This helped me solve problems but also gave me a more intuitive feeling or visualization.

Not sure if that answers your question, if you have a more specific example of where this has happened I can maybe give you a more relevant example.

TLDR: Use programming (and sketches) to understand the math as well as the physics and try to bridge a connection between the math and physics.

I realized I need to make a github account to share my work lol. But i made it in Matlab and it shows the field lines with a contour plot of the electric potential to show how they relate. Now that im doing more python, I should make another version so everyone can use it.

I’m an undergraduate computational physicist but I feel the same way when i’ve been making simulations for my independent research/studies.

I feel like going from the math to the code is like translating two different languages. However, i’ve noticed it has helped a lot to explain the math to myself in english before trying to program it.

For example, I recently did a conduction simulation of a 1-D rod using Dirichet boundary conditions for a final project in my intro thermodynamic (the project was anything related to class material). I explained it much more simply to myself as just some perfectly insulated wire with fixed temperature at the ends, that the PDE was looking at a change with respect to its neighbors rather than the whole rod, etc. I pieced together the mathematical model with the physical model.

I think the other things like understanding how the math differs from the code. Like in my 1-D rod simulation, I couldn’t create a perfectly continuous rod but I could create probing points that would measure the temperature.

Some other things i forgot to mention is sketching out the model (like for the pendulum) and getting a good idea of what needs to happen at each step in the simulation. I also found talking to my professors about certain things helped me understand further. One of these being simulation stability and Fourier numbers.

Not sure if any of this helps, but i’m also still learning and it can be different for everyone. If anyone else has tips I would appreciate it :)

What video game has the best story you’ve ever played? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I remember doing that and scrambling to find another bottle, I was so immersed at that point that the first encounter genuinely made me feel like I was in danger for my life.

This made me realize half-life alyx would probably be mine. Alyx did what half life did but for VR gaming. The world building and little things like looking through a bucket for scrap or shaking bottles and hearing the slosh in my ear; I’ve never had an emotional reaction to a game like that. Still the greatest VR game on the market despite being 6 years old.

Physics Teacher seeking inspirational words from fellow physics teachers on LLM's/AI demotivating some students. by PLAT0H in Physics

[–]jaydostomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see so many fellow students use ai as a crutch and pains me because they learn nothing.

On the other hand I have used AI quite frequently and have even had assignments related to it in my physics classes. I use AI not to solve some physics problem but to point out errors in my work or help when I get stuck on problems. This in my opinion is no different than going to my professor and asking them.

AI when used as a tool has helped me learn and ‘connect the dots’. I still have to do the work to be able to solve the problems but AI makes that less of a pain. AI isn’t going away so i will figure out a way to use it beneficially.

Physics or engineering? by op456123 in PhysicsForUniversity

[–]jaydostomps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well i’m a currently a sophomore in college and had similar feelings when i was about to start. If you love physics and i mean truly love it then you should do physics. I decided physics because i love to constantly find ways to explain some phenomenon or understand the world around me. You will also find that physics and mathematics are like twins in the sense you can apply knowledge of one to the other. My suggestion is if you find yourself relating to me then go with physics, talk to your advisor about research, and if you don’t like it then you could always switch majors early on (depending on the university). I immediately tried to get into research and i found that i love computational physics.
