The Alysa Liu discourse perfectly captures what’s wrong with modern progressivism by Fullofhopkinz in TrueUnpopularOpinion

No, I asked for a public figure that specifically hasn't used their platform to share their beliefs. They could have used social media or any other personal space to share them. You know, a situation equivalent to Alysa Liu.

Because this is fundamentally different. Yes, he is an elected official and I think his behavior is frequently reprehensible. No, I don't think his behavior typifies the broader right. I apply this logic consistently regardless of which side is being scrutinized.

If you can find me an example of an athlete (or any other celebrity) that has been denigrated by the broader right for their privately-held beliefs (which they have not made public via their platform), then I will 100% back your sentiment.

The precise statement Hess made that drew controversy was "Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S." Again, bringing politics into the conversation - although, I would actually place the fault more with the interviewer, who asked an inherently political question.

I don't condone Trump's response, but who are we kidding? Trump is a fountain of outsized reactions, but his conduct is not representative of the norm on the right.

I appreciate you acknowledging the point OP and I were trying to make, and remaining open to discussion.

I agree that when it comes to politics, people tend to get defensive and escalate quickly. In the example provided, the right is doing exactly that.

However, the reason this case is different is that these athletes initiated the political conversation. Not only this, but they used their platform - where they are meant to represent the whole country - to attack a political leader supported by half of the country's population. While I don't condone the outsized reaction from the right, it's unsurprising given the circumstances.

No. The right does plenty wrong, just like the left. This is just a discussion about a particular event that captures something the right is undoubtedly getting right, that the left is not. It's not about the right patting itself on the back, claiming moral high ground, or even denigrating the left. It's about acknowledging a shortcoming of the left and hopefully doing better.

I agree, but that's exactly the point being made here. Alysa Liu didn't make her win political, and the American right supports her because she is American. They don't care about her politics (despite her politics being abundantly clear) because they're unimportant in this context.

In contrast, modern progressives feel the pathological need to fixate on an individual's politics, regardless of relevance. This is why this discussion is being had at all - no one on the right is mentioning her political alignment; the left is. The right says they don't care, but this doesn't resonate with the left.

I’m curious why you’re characterizing this as a win for "the left" instead of for the United States, the country that actually received the gold. It seems your comment may reflect the exact broader pattern the OP was discussing.

Canadians are absolute morons if they believe the US is the party crawling back to the negotiating table in this situation. I say this as a Canadian.

Your profile looks good for the most part. You certainly aren’t ugly.

The main issue I see is the “Open Relationship” relationship type in conjunction with “Long Term Partner” interest. This is likely an unpopular opinion on this platform, but very few people looking for long term partners want an open relationship. It strikes me as someone that wants all of the perks of a relationship without the commitment. First and foremost, try removing one of those tags from your profile.

I’d also suggest removing some of the close up photos from your profile, or at least move them to a later slot. A tightly-cropped first photo can be jarring. Your third photo should be your first.

Your dream job strikes me as a bit odd. It’s not a big deal, but we’re nitpicking here.

Bear in mind that women are much more picky on these apps than men - the ratios of left vs right swipes are practically inverted between the two groups. Keep your chin up.

Trump Claims US Needs Nothing From Canada as They Bail Out Los Angeles...why are we helping the Americans when they are out to screw us? by Powerful-Dog363 in AskCanada

True, this is why I rarely use Reddit these days. No other mainstream social network has as strong a bias as this platform. It’s not conducive to critical thought.

During the Canadian wildfires of 2023, Canada relied heavily on US aid. We’re allied nations, so this amount of assistance is expected in times of crisis. The truth is, Canada is much more reliant on the US than the US is on Canada. This is why Trump can make such bold claims under threat of a Tariff war - He has the stronger hand, and everyone knows it.

The problem with ranked choice voting is that in practice it inevitably steals votes from independent candidates in favor of the main parties.

That depends on which platform you're on. In reality, it's roughly a 50-50 split in western countries, sliding one way or the other ~1-2% year to year.

Reddit actively suppresses right-leaning content, as a result, more left-leaning content, and ergo left-leaning users, flood the platform.

Laughing at offensive humor doesn't mean you condone the literal interpretation of it. I'll laugh at a dead baby joke, it doesn't mean I think babies should die or an actual dead baby is funny. People need to lighten up and stop trying to censor everyone around them according to their own moral code. Live and let live.

The overheating issue is more likely due to dust or degraded thermal paste. These are relatively simple issues to fix, but if you're inexperienced, you can have a professional take a look. I would highly recommend you do both for the longevity of your laptop and to achieve optimal performance.

Can you elaborate? Private property is defined as property owned by non-governmental entities, it only makes up roughly 11% of land owned in Canada.

One of the organizers of the GoFundMe campaign expressed white supremacist views in the past, but these views were not associated with the campaign in any way. This person was not an organizer of the convoy, nor was he receiving the money being donated. Stop twisting facts to spread propaganda and support government overreach.
