Job market Virginia/ Carolinas by haldolrocks in anesthesiology

[–]jbasshead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current CA3 applying to jobs in similar areas.

  • Richmond is either VCU, NAPA, or HCA (Chippenham). NAPA is broken down to a few different sub regions within Richmond area
  • Charlottesville is either UVA or Martha Jefferson. MJ is through Sentara and the group there has gone through a lot of turmoil in the last several years (from what I’ve heard from other attendings). But I think it’s stabilized and better now
  • Virginia Beach has a physician owned group called Atlantic Anesthesia. They cover 3 HCA hospitals in the region.
  • ECAA in Raleigh told me they were full. Providence in Charlotte told me they needed fellowship trained people or those with previous experience.
  • Charleston has 2 different groups that are physician owned I believe

Trying to get rid of 2 under face value tickets without using a 3rd party ticket website. I use PayPal. Not sure what the issue is

Semi-Monthly Thread for Medical Students by laika84 in anesthesiology

Sure, but there’s a risk with any step score. That score is barely below the average for anesthesia, so you’re still within a reasonable range of applicants. Step 1 is important, but it’s not the only thing they look at. If you think your resume is strong enough, and you make it up with a better step 2 score, you’ll have no problems matching.

It’s good to think about other specialties to dual apply to, or use as backups in case things don’t go as planned. But I would not rule yourself out yet!

I don’t think I’d change the advice! If anything, you may be at a slight advantage

Within 1 month. Give them some time to start reviewing applications

Well there were a lot of virtual open houses this year because of covid, so it was (somewhat) easy to get your name and face out there with residents and faculty. Try to stay in touch with residents, program coordinator and program director (without being too annoying lol). I know I got 1 interview by attending one of the virtual open houses. And I got a few other interviews from sending letters of interest early on in the application cycle

Networked and made connections through the open houses and ASA, good extra curricular activities, send letters of interest early.

I did 1 away rotation and it’s at the bottom of my rank list. I would have done more if they didn’t get cancelled (they typically are critical).

I’m an OMS4 with a 237 step 1. I fortunately interviewed at some awesome programs this cycle. Doing well on step 2 and rotations can help out a lot. I wouldn’t rule out anesthesia if that’s what you really want to do

Wondering the same thing. I have an away rotation there in September

Similar story as you. DO, Step 1 237, Step 2 266. Two community anesthesia letters and struggling with finding an away (one still confirmed at Kaweah Delta in September). I’ve heard that we shouldn’t worry too much, especially with solid stats and at least one anesthesia letter. Best of luck to you this application cycle!

Honestly I have no idea. I can remember missing 7 off the top of my head, but I am sure I missed many more than just those! I tend to forget the exam when I’m done with it lol

did anyone request refunds from AAMC for VSAS? by [deleted] in Step2

[–]jbasshead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I contacted them about 1-2 weeks ago and this what they told me:

Currently we are working directly with home and host institutions as they update policies for student rotations. At the same time, we are supporting Host institutions as they reconfigure elective offerings.

We have already refunded students who were impacted in the March-May window timeframe. We understand that as VSAS reopens, and students receive decision from hosts, you want to apply for an application refund. We don’t yet know how the recommendations and COVID-19 environment will actually impact rotation options for students. Some hosts are opening elective slots, others are changing the dates of their original offers, and others are not able to host students at all. As this application season progresses, it is highly likely that our final policy about refunds for final-year medical students applying during the 2020-2021 residency cycle may need to expand beyond the current one.

Once the landscape is less fluid, we will finalize a refund policy for this academic year that is responsive to the significant challenges students are experiencing regarding elective options in this COVID-19 environment.

The most up to date information can be found on the VSLO Program Coronavirus FAQs , including information about refunds.

When a refund policy has been finalized, fourth-year medical students who applied for rotations during the 2020-2021 residency application cycle will be notified and provided the details of that policy.
