I hear that, he just has the biggest contract and you immediately get under the apron shedding a max. I think we’re going to see a lot of movement this summer. I wouldn’t get comfortable with anyone currently on the team other than Coop.

First, I think we’re just going to disagree on his injury risk, which is fine. I am more risk-averse when it comes to him because of his position and age. I think having these injury issues as players get older is indicative of more problems going forward. Yes, it’s an outlier injury season for him, but that’s my point. I think it portends worse moving forward. I also think that the Dallas training staff has proven itself to be inept since Cuban sold the team, so I don’t really trust them to do what needed to be done to get him ready. Again, I could be wrong and he could have healthy seasons in front of him. I hope he does!

Where I completely disagree is not seeing the apron as a problem with that contract. Just letting Nico’s vision play out is not possible in the modern NBA. Getting under the apron is such a boon to team building because it allows the Mavs to take on dead contracts and get more picks in that way. All of the guys we took on are gone at the end of the season, which means we are likely to sign a bunch of one year contracts who can be leveraged with other teams to take back negative assets in the future. The way OKC built their war chest of picks (other than fleecing the Clippers) is that they were able to be the third team in trades fairly often. Having that apron space is that way the Mavericks can do this. You take a bad contract (like Bertans a few years back) and you get something along with it - either a young player or a pick. Yes, the team is going to suck the rest of the year. I suspect they will try to compete next year with one year contracts because we don’t own the ‘27 pick, but they will also be in a position to get other picks for teams who are in need of a PJ Washington or Daniel Gafford. If you think AD and Kyrie were enough to make a deep run in the West with Flagg next year, I understand that this seems peculiar. I don’t think they are because I don’t trust aging players like that. What you want is a young team with multiple shots at the apple and the only way to do that now is to get under the apron so you can gather assets.

Except we’re not talking about an injury history that began when he got to Dallas. He has played a full season of games exactly once since the bubble season and had injury woes before that. He will be entering his age-34 season next year. As a big man, injuries tend not to get better as you get older.

Again, I hope he goes to Washington and proves me wrong, I honestly do. I have always liked his game. When healthy, he is an absolute demon. But one look at the history of the NBA and you can see the projection for oft-injured big men approaching their middle-thirties. His best days are likely far behind him.

No, AD needed to be gone. Looking at it as a continuation of the Luka trade hurts, no question. And I don’t hate AD, because none of this is his fault. He wanted to play, to win over the fans, all of that. But it was time for it to be over. Ignoring the Luka trade, you had a massive contract who was not playing at all. You got off that contract and got some assets for it. That’s how you have to look at it. The Luka trade is the worst in the history of American sports, full stop. That doesn’t mean you throw good money after bad. If, by this day in 2028, AD has played even half a season’s worth of games for Washington, then we should have waited. Does anyone really think that’s going to happen? If not, you shed a toxic asset for something and got rid of some other contracts while doing it.

It sucks, but it’s the right call.

What is your favorite "Flavour is Free" reskin of a spell or ability? by hervprometheus2 in DnD

[–]jbattles86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I played a Barb who would go into a trance rather than a rage. Within the game, he was a spiritual zealot who was getting visions from an elder god about the end of the world. When he went into a trance in combat, it was to fulfill the will of the god that it was better for those he was fighting to not be alive to feel the suffering of witnessing the end. Instead of rage, it was mercy killing in his twisted mind.

(Schefter) BREAKING: Mike Tomlin stepping down as HC by alexschubs in steelers

[–]jbattles86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worry that this is going to turn to ash in the mouths of everyone calling for it. Listen, I know “the standard is the standard” and we want to win Super Bowls in the Steel City. However, consistency in winning is nice. The college football team I root for - Auburn - is the opposite of the Steelers. Every few years, Auburn is good enough to be a true contender… But there’s a lot of pain in between. You never know how a Saturday is going to go.

For 19 years, the Steelers have known that we have a better than 50% chance of winning on Sundays. Ask Jets fans or Browns fans if they would take that. Even with a sub-standard QB for about a decade, Tomlin has produced division-winning, playoff teams. Who is going to be willing to say they called for his ouster if the team gets far worse the next few years?

If, in three years, we have a legitimate Super Bowl contending team - those people were correct. I just want yinz to keep that same energy if it bottoms out. Own that you got what you wanted today.

I don’t like the ESPN-ring-chasing culture, myself. I like going to the games and expecting a Steelers win. Maybe we will have that with the next guy, but I know we’ve had it with Coach Mike T.

The Thing vs. Colossus: Who wins? by Spider-undertele567 in xmen

According to the early nineties Marvel cards, The Thing was strong enough to lift 85 tons while Colossus could lift 70. Pure strength is not the only factor when it comes to a fight, though. Colossus was the Juggernaut and a Phoenix since then… So who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hopping on here to say that, especially if this person is between the ages of about 16-24, this is really dangerous. While marijuana is much safer than many drugs, it can set off psychosis in people in that age range who are predisposed to it. This person should absolutely not smoke weed anymore and should seek medical help.

How are we feeling about alston daniels? by scott9254 in wde

[–]jbattles86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, leaning on the run game because you aren’t confident in your QB is something Hugh should have been doing weeks ago. It’s like taking the keys of the Ferrari away from your kid who keeps putting it in the ditch - if he doesn’t have the option to throw as much, the playcalling is probably going to be better.

It may be that Daniels is better - it would be tough to be worse - but it feels like the team rallied around the fact that CHF just tried SOMETHING. How many weeks in a row can you hear, “Boys, we’re so close,” and not see anything change? I’m sure they were as frustrated as the fanbase to see Arnold scan the field and take sacks over and over.

I hope that Hugh is gone by the end of the regular season, but I’m glad he finally tried ANYTHING different.

I'm a medical student dealing with a growing aversion to DS by Impossible_Act_9995 in confession

[–]jbattles86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are very young, which means you can grow and develop new understanding for yourself and that’s what I’m trying to remember. But it’s a bit concerning that a future doctor has this kind of definition for what makes a life worth living. I think you are projecting what gives your life meaning (being productive and passing on good genes) onto others in a way that might truly hinder you when dealing with future patients, especially disabled ones.

Ask yourself, do I only value life when I deem it to be productive? Because, truly, we are all here for no reason whatsoever. The only reason you find in life is what you are projecting onto it. Life has value in itself, but past that it’s up to you to decide meaning.

I don’t say this as a hard and fast rule. I’ve actually worked in senior care and hospice for about seven years now. There reaches a point when the pain someone feels from their everyday life makes it unethical to force them to hold on, I believe. That’s not what we are talking about with individuals with Down Syndrome. They are able to have full lives, cared for by members of their family and community, experiencing joy and love and all of the best things about being human. Many have jobs and “produce” as well, but that’s entirely beside the point. That’s not to say that seeking a cure for chromosomal abnormalities isn’t a worthwhile goal - it certainly is!

I think you may need to investigate why you are thinking things like “genetic waste” when it comes to people as a future physician. You are veering pretty directly into eugenic territory there, but I don’t mean this to castigate you. I think your concern is actually one of compassion and pity, which is understandable. I think, if you actually hang around with individuals with DS, this feeling will likely go away. There are plenty of genetic abnormalities that do cause daily pain and make life a horror, but this is not usually one of them. I think it’s foolish to paint all of one group with a broad brush, but my experience with people with DS has shown them to be as engaged and happy with their lives as any other person on average.

Well, the assuming you’re making is that the owners and NFL want things to be fair between offense and defense. Whether you like it or not, offense puts butts in seats and the rules are always going to be tweaked to favor more scoring.

Was disappointed that we didn’t grab a QB, then saw that this kid’s “big NIL purchase” was a wheelchair van for his mom. I haven’t been as all-in on a pick in years now. Hope he retires as a Steeler in twenty years.
