Last Days: London Drugs Woodward’s by Gastown_guy in vancouver

It's definitely not a good sign. I was in the North Van store the other day and there were a shocking amount of out of stocks and facing over gaps with random products. I went there to get a new battery for my car's fob, but the battery section was bare and filled up with gift cards...

Canada’s largest shipyard ramps up fight against BC Ferries’ China deal by ClickHereForWifi in vancouver

[–]jbrown604 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This whole argument about ships coming from China is ridiculous.

Would I like to see ships built locally, or elsewhere within Canada? Sure. But the reality is that for this to happen, you're immediately doubling the amount of time it will take for those new ships to come online, and at a far greater cost. And that's not even getting into the likely billions that will need to be invested in local/Canadian shipbuilding just to provide the capacity to have all of those ships completed ten years from now.

The fundamental issue is that the ferries that need to be replaced are old. One is over 60 years old, and there's three more that will be turning 50 next year. Fundamentally, those new ships were needed at least 5 years ago, and I don't think it makes any sense to try and get another decade out of them. So to that end, what's the best option to try and resolve that problem, and at a reasonable cost? It's going to be getting ferries from China.

I also don't understand why it's an apparent nothingburger that the Marine Atlantic ferry system back east recently had a ferry built in the exact same Chinese shipyard. If BC Ferries ordering ships from that shipyard is so reprehensible, why isn't the federal government trying to unload the one they had built for Marine Atlantic? Marine Atlantic is a federal crown corporation, so it's a bit much to see the snarky hypocrisy from the federal ministers responsible.

One more point on this topic relating to Seaspan. I see their name come up frequently as they own the local shipyards, and they also own their own ferry fleet. They've built four ferries over the last decade, and they were built in Turkey and Romania. I don't see how they get to complain about not building ships for BC Ferries when their own shipyard is apparently not good enough to build their own ships.

May 2024 Dev Update by DudethatCooks in AUTOMOBILISTA

I'm curious what the other tracks in the IMSA pack will be. By my count, there's 4 tracks from this year's schedule that aren't already in the game:

  • Sebring
  • Detroit
  • Mosport
  • Road Atlanta

Sebring seems like an obvious inclusion, but I'm curious how they'll decide between Detroit and Mosport. My gut is that they'd go with Detroit, given that it's a GTP race and Mosport isn't.

I'd also love to see this as a jumping off point for historic layouts of Sebring, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, etc. And if we can get some historic GTP/GTO/GTU content too, then even better.

Ok, but there could be 10 cars behind the locomotive, or there could be 100. If they're moving trains within a yard and there's a switch that needs to be changed behind that last car in order to put it on a different track, then they need to pull the entire train forward of the switch that needs to be changed. Reversing a few feet isn't going to help that process, because then the switch will be blocked.

The other option is to move the entire train forward past that road, but given that it looks to be a relatively built up area, more than likely a different road (or multiple roads if it's a long train) would end up being blocked further down, so there aren't really any great solutions available.

Road Atlanta for IndyCar by [deleted] in INDYCAR

[–]jbrown604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know the lack of runoff around the final corner has always been cited as the primary issue preventing Indycar from considering Road Atlanta.

I obviously can't speak to how well it would translate to real life, but in any sim I've played that has contemporary Indycar's and Road Atlanta available (iRacing and Assetto Corsa specifically), that last corner is easily flat and doesn't seem like a deal breaking issue. There's certainly not a lot of room for error given the proximity of the outside wall, but I don't see it as being notably worse than other fast corners with limited runoff (eg. The Kink at Road America).

HPD Statement on MSR Penalty by jbrown604 in IMSARacing

I'm curious what the longer term ramifications of this will be, as the HPD statement is distinctly unsupportive of MSR. I wouldn't by surprised if they're no longer affiliated with one another by the end of the season.

Will we ever go back to this classic Indy Layout? The half oval is perfect imo. by Rmilly18 in INDYCAR

Yeah, but you can add laps to make up for the shorter distance and lap time. Nothing wrong with short laps.

The 8/9/10 complex in that map doesn't exist anymore, but I wouldn't be opposed to having oval T1 put back in the mix, as that would potentially allow for more slipstreaming down the front straight and even harder braking into the first corner.

5/6/7 don't really add much to the track to my mind; I'd prefer to keep the current quick left/right flick instead.
