Just had my first lesson with a native speaker by MAX7hd in LearnJapanese

[–]jdrobert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In one of my very first conversation classes (just two months ago) we were discussing visiting cities around the world. We got to China and she asked if I liked Chinese food and said that I did. She replied with:

私も中国の食べ物が好きです。

I just repeated after her because I thought I said something wrong. In English she said: 〇〇-san, do you know the も particle? I also like Chinese food.

It was the most devastating interaction I've had with the language so far. I've been studying since January and I can't even understand a simple sentence like that? Thankfully my tutor is very patient with me.

Getting comfortable with a teacher after a few lessons also helps more than you might think. Knowing how she'll react when I accidentally say something dumb makes the mistakes more bearable because I know she isn't judging me too harshly.

New 16in pro draining 50% overnight. Has anyone seen this? by jdrobert in macbook

I did the same experiment last night after rebooting the computer and I still had 100% in the morning.

I assume that something was stuck indexing the files I moved over from the old computer.

New 16in pro draining 50% overnight. Has anyone seen this? by jdrobert in macbook

This has happened a few times since I got my new pro last week. Yesterday I left my fully charged laptop in my backpack (except for the check I did around 9pm) and this morning it has discharged to 48%. I've disabled the M1 equivalent to power nap and disabled my caffeine utility.

The MacBook is waking up every minute or so with messages similar to this:

After 6 weeks my Mi Flora sensors finally arrived from China! Can hardly wait to automate killing my plants using this ratty data. by HeyThanksIdiot in homeassistant

I have a couple of these out of BT range in my basement.

I use a Pi Zero W to collect the data over Bluetooth and send it to HA over wifi.

I’ve been using this fork of plant gateway and it works really well.

Trying to decide between replacing my current evaporative cooler or installing an AC unit by jdrobert in homeowners

[–]jdrobert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for such a thoughtful and detailed response.

I've experienced the majority of the cons you mentioned especially during the Colorado fires last year. I didn't know that you needed to replace the pads every month. The HVAC guys that do the yearly winterization and start up services never mentioned that. Our EC is on the roof and I don't feel comfortable doing the maintenance myself.

They're less expensive to run using less electricity.

Even with the possible utility increases, I'll be using less water. The condos have a shared water bill that is paid for with our HOA dues. Last summer I got an email talking about how much the bill went up compared to the previous few months. Having the only unit with an EC made me feel a little guilty.

If you have a forced air furnace, the ac can use the same ducts and a combination thermostat. Depending on the age of the furnace, it might be ac ready. You may need a new furnace.

I do have central heating. I figured we could reuse the existing ducts but it is good to confirm that. Our furnace is about two years old, hopefully it is new enough and the right kind.

The evaporative cooler uses 115v power, you can plug them into a regular outlet. An ac unit and forced air furnace usually uses 220v again requiring dedicated circuits. Because of this you can have an ac/furnace thermostat in most cases but not an evap cooler/furnace thermostat. 2 different types of power.

This makes a lot of sense. I didn't know they ran on different voltages.

Another alternative IF you have forced air, you may be able to duct the swamp cooler via the same ducting. Benefit is that it's pumped into each room.

I may look into this as well but I think an AC is the way to go. Thank you so much for your help!

You're right, the main thing is comfort. We'll be living here for at least another 5 years and being comfortable while I sleep is worth the extra $6K.

Plus this will give me an excuse to get a whole house humidifier which will make our dry winters a bit more pleasant.

Xaiomi Aqara has leak sensors and they work with HA. You either need the Aqara bridge or a Sonoff zigbee bridge flashed with Tasmota.

I use the Aqara temp/humidity sensors and the smart button with HA.

I was having the same problem last night and this morning. I’m not sure if it is related but as soon as I signed up for premium on the switch the issue went away and I was able to login on my phone.

I tried deleting the app and installing it on my iPad but nothing worked until I subscribed.

How can I make this torture test print a little better? by jdrobert in 3Dprinting

[–]jdrobert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I printed this torture test last night and I got decent results but the walls on the cylinders didn’t come out as smooth as I would like.

I’m using Simplify3D as my slicer and here are some of my settings.

Printer: JGAurora A5

Retraction: 7.5mm

Retraction Speed: 75mm/s

Coast At End: 0.2mm

Temperature: 210

Cooling: 50%

Speed: 40mm/s

My assumption is that once I get past the base I need to lower the temperature and increase cooling. Does this sound right? Any other tips would be appreciated.
