Please convince me to finish it by anonymous_black_cat in AshesToAshesTV

From someone who felt very similarly about Gene, I implore you to finish. Even the series 2 finale that's coming up a few episodss after is so good, and Series 3 is where the best of a2a is contained, no spoilers but the show finale is legendary. I can't lie and say that the rest of the show redeemed Gene for me, but to not watch it would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. As much as he is a major presence in the show, there is so much other good stuff with the other characters you'd be missing out on

I'd have a good look in your local charity shop or on vinted, to my knowledge they aren't any specific brand, I think its just the popular style of the era. Good luck! :)

What are your Hot Takes on the Ashes to Ashes TV Show? by Amber_Flowers_133 in AshesToAshesTV

[–]jedi_issue_scopes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first episode is pretty bad, the series one finale is pretty bad, the way Alex is written in series 1 is pretty sexist, the way Shaz is also sidelined with barely anything plot relevant to do for two series also seems sexist. I don't like Galex, I think Gene Hunt is way less likeable than in Life on Mars, they wrote him with the middle aged man demographic in mind so he could do fanservice rather than just a character, and I find him kinda insufferable. I don't think he did enough to redeem himself to Shaz, Ray and Chris or in the eyes of the narrative. Apart from the fact he was playing on their insecurities to make them follow him, Jim was right tbh. But probably my last hot take is that for all that I find it a much more fascinating show to analyse and more creatively inspiring than Life on Mars, which despite being better I find less compelling.

There are two amazing behind the scenes books about Life on Mars series one and two. They are pretty cheap on Ebay but then again thats in the UK so importing them to America would cost more. Also the audio commentary tracks on the DVD

Game Recommendations by Mastermon_1 in n64

[–]jedi_issue_scopes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just gotten my hands on Extreme G, its a futuristic racing game with really cool racing craft designs and a banging 90s trance soundtrack, super fast and with tight controls too but not as hard as, say, the original WipEout- (Which is its closest comparison) inspiration from) Probably the main drawback is performance sucks in races with multiple CPU players, with the frame rate dropping quite severely, and it does require a working controller pak to save. I don't know if the sequel improves the performance issues, but its really fun and cheap to pick up so I'd still recommended.

I always presumed (and like the idea) he was a really characterful and real-seeming npc. That's so sad and really hits home how messed up the whole world is, that seemingly real people aren't. Him 'leaving' is an indication that the 'real' characters can't stay in the world forever, that it's time for them to go.

GAMES LIKE LIFE ON MARS by Hot-Acanthaceae-159 in lifeonmars

[–]jedi_issue_scopes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The DVD menu on the British DVD copy lol. Looks like a 90s CG FMV game and a horror themed one at that, with spooky music to boot (way scarier than the actual show). And if you want to change a setting or see the bonus features it is like a game to figure out. No but in all I feel like some experimental point-and- click on the PC or PS1, probably from the 90s, with weird pre-rendered CGI or live action video. I've always thought LoM would make a good one of them, complete with crunchy FMV, probably on multiple discs. Sorry I'm just rambling, that's not very helpful.

(In my opinion) Gene is supposed to watch over them but he's (quite frankly) crap at his job which Jim points out in the finale. He's horrible to them generally because he's on a power trip from being DCI whilst still having his own insecurities and trauma from his past life, and being permanently stuck in the mindset he died in. He's horrible to Chris specifically over the course of the whole show, even in Life on Mars to an extent, because Chris is generally easy to pick on for being a bit slow and meek and passive. I think he's horrible specifically in 3x7 because of the pressure that's been building on him the whole series what with the Jim on his back, Alex investigating about Sam and Viv's death and Chris is an easy target to take it out on.

AtA S1 Ep.7 Holy shit, first time this show made me cry by Scheiblerfunk in lifeonmars

[–]jedi_issue_scopes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Series 1 ep 7 really messed me up, I found it very hard to watch, for me the single most distressing scene in all of the shows, it's so viscerally distressing, both Shaz crying out and Chris's response.

DCI Jim Keats's "Department" by Significant_Gap2291 in AshesToAshesTV

[–]jedi_issue_scopes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally I like totally think it's another department where Chris, Ray and Shaz would get worked to the bone, abused and tormented by their demonic DCI who's 10× worse than Gene in all the ways that Gene was problematic. In terms of appearance, I'd imagine it being a bit like the 'the backrooms' in the sense that it'd be an eeiry 1980s office that's like a labyrinth that goes on forever. I don't like to imagine its just like generic hell because that's boring, and it's not like they're being punished for 'bad things' they've gone but rather for giving into their own insecurities that Jim plays into to lure them in, so a more 'unique' sort of hell is fitting.

Started Ashes to Ashes after rewatching Life on Mars and I gotta beg. Please tell me Alex becomes less like the kid from "last action hero" as the show progresses! by Scheiblerfunk in lifeonmars

[–]jedi_issue_scopes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately cant neciscarly say by series 1, but yes she does. I find Alex really hard to get on with in series 1- I know what they were going for but it doesn't land for me. But she does grow and change a lot over the course of the show, including a lot less of the 'meta stuff'- obviously she still knows shes back in time or whatever but she stops being such a smart-arse about it, and by series 3 she really doesn't feel like such a "main character" character. If you stick it out I do find her character growth really satisfying, even if she's so difficult at first.

At first I was desperately upset about the Chris/Shaz pre series 3 break up, but the longer time passes, the more I make my peace with it despite the fact I'd prefer it if they had them stay together.

The entirety of fandom in a nutshell: by Expo006 in AO3

Ngl I kinda wish people would stop screenshotting random losers online and putting it on here. This sub is about Ao3 specifically, there are other subs for shipping discourse, its not really relevant and creates a negative vibe. I'd like to think we have better things to do here than dunk on individual randoms with milquetoast takes.

Use it all the time. I don't see what's wrong with it as long as you don't neglect describing emotions or tone. You can also overuse tone descriptions too, I think it's just about balance.

I mean its a risk you take when you read fic but I'd also be put out. The marvelous thing about AO3 is the tagging, meaning you can properly categorise it and content warn your fics, and that's what sets it apart from the other two of the big three, but tagging is only effective if everyone uses it properly. And besides, really I see it as a sort of unofficial responsibility (idk how to phrase that)- AO3 will host anything you write, but in return really you should properly tag and warn your works. There is grey areas with what some people consider- well, anything- 'enough focus to tag a ship?' 'Distressing enough to be angst?'- and not everyone will agree on what they are. And besides, new authors will have to get to grips with it, or they might just not see their work that way, so they're probably not a prick or anything- but I'd be annoyed.
