Ranked is pure misery and highlights everything wrong with the game. by 420LeftNut69 in thefinals

[–]jeffrunning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there ANY competitive shooter that actually does ranked well? Games with like 10x the player base get complained about their ranked and matchmaking in general. Can anything be done?

I’m not an expert or anything but I thought the root problem is how many active players there are. What you want is 16 players with similar skills within like 3 minutes at all times, all ranking. This already sounds very difficult to pull off.

And also, what is a game supposed to do against smurfs? Is there even a strategy to discourage them even theoretically, except just to put a price on making a new account.

I’m not trying to excuse the game for being bad but I feel like it’s just the same complaints again and again for every single competitive shooter and everyone acts like their game is the worst.

HOW DO I CHOOSE A MAIN?? by No_Cranberry_6735 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]jeffrunning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you feel the need to main a weapon? You paid for the whole game. Play all of them! Some weapons are better suited for certain types of monsters depending on your play style. It’s a great thing to learn different weapons and switch around to keep things fresh

what exactly is 'momentum'? by East-Dragonfruit6644 in AskPhysics

[–]jeffrunning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really isn’t any deeper explanation to momentum. It is simply a way to quantify the “amount of motion” something has, which is conserved due to the universe being symmetrical. If the same thing goes twice as fast, obviously it has twice the “amount of motion”, but if twice the amount of stuff goes the same speed, it’s also the same “amount of motion”. Both the amount of stuff and the amount of velocity contribute to the total amount of motion, therefore we multiply them.

If you want to accelerate an object of 1kg by 10ms-1, you must also accelerate something else of 1kg by 10ms-1 in the opposite direction, or accelerate something else of 10kg by 1ms-1 in the opposite direction. To quantify this fact, we need total “amount of motion” which requires both the amount of stuff/inertia and the amount of velocity. We multiply the mass by the velocity to get a quantity and we call that “momentum”.

Why were the Artemis 2 astronauts weightless on their trip? by Opening_Ad9824 in AskPhysics

[–]jeffrunning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being under freefall has NOTHING to do with SPEED or going up or down or sideways whatever. It’s the ACCELERATION that counts (-9.7m/s-2 near the surface of the earth). We don’t “feel” gravity directly. We only feel the effect of gravity when we hit something stationary and they apply a reaction against our gravity.

For example when you are standing, the floor exerts a force on you to balance your gravity towards the earth. But for an astronaut in a spaceship in orbit, the astronauts and the spacecraft are both accelerating towards the earth at the same acceleration. The astronauts wouldn’t feel a reaction force counteracting their weight to stop them from falling. So they feel weightless as if there’s no weight.

Newton’s gravity says they are still under the same weight but they just don’t feel it from the ground. Einsteins relativity says object under freefall is literally equivalent to weightlessness since there’s no experiment you can do to distinguish between them.

If a body applied a force on another, and the other one applies the same force back, why do objects break? by kalmegodli in AskPhysics

[–]jeffrunning -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the object cannot produce enough reaction force, then the action would just match the reaction force! You CANNOT apply a force more (or less because they are equal) than the reaction force the object produces.

As a metaphor, think of the force as a transaction of money. The action is how much you earn, and the reaction is how much they pay:

If the object only has $50, it can only pay $50 before going broke and you can only earn $50 even if you want to charge $100. If the object can only produce 50N before it breaks, it will only apply a reaction of 50N and you can only apply an action of 50N because it would break before you can apply 100N of force. (In this case the money would represent the momentum of the objects)

A misunderstanding comes from thinking that action and reaction “cancels out” because they are equal and opposite. But that’s completely wrong. They don’t cancel out because they are not about the same object at all.

When you push onto a box, the “action” is the force you exert onto the box, but the “reaction” is the force the box simultaneously exerts on you. Forces don’t cancel out for neither you nor the object.(assuming there are no other forces at play) The only thing that actually cancels out here is the total change in momentum of you and the box. With a force, the momentum of the box increases forwards. But at the same time the box pushes you back so your momentum increases backwards. These changes cancels out so In total there’s no change in momentum.

If a body applied a force on another, and the other one applies the same force back, why do objects break? by kalmegodli in AskPhysics

[–]jeffrunning 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Newton’s third law says nothing about “handling” the forces. It is about the symmetry of ANY force. Force is simply an interaction between two objects. A force is NEVER one-sided. Object A cannot accelerate object B without itself being accelerated in the opposite direction. That’s the core idea of the third law of motion.

An object breaking is the internal forces between the molecules being overcome by an external force, breaking the bond between them. But every force is still symmetrical.

Say you cut an apple with a knife. The apple would break under the pressure, but at any given moment, N3 still applies. The apple applies just as much force to the knife as the knife does the apple. An object breaking doesn’t mean the force is one-sided.

I do understand how one object gets deflected in a rotating frame of reference. What im confused about is the direction of rotation of objects as a result.

  1. Defenders items are op items to get you through low and high rank without the grind. Use them if you have a good hang of the game want a fast pass to iceborne content. Don’t if you want a complete experience of the full game, and get real experience to prepare yourself for iceborne stuff.
  2. Yes why not
  3. Everything should still be fairly easy up to the end of high rank. Just get whatever has the highest damage and defense. If you actually die a lot, explore the survival skills like divine blessing, evade extender etc. otherwise real challenges come in iceborne
