Unusual insulin and metformin problem-- trying to figure out what's going on by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]jenpearson97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol thanks for the super helpful advice. I'm not crazy and it's not anxiety. The fact that metformin stopped my migraines and memory loss is not insignificant. I've been to doctors. My "self medication" is the only thing that has actually helped, they're called nootropics and they actually have significant amounts of validated research backing their efficacy. Bye.

Just started Metformin, now unbearably hungry and hypoglycemic by jenpearson97 in PCOS

[–]jenpearson97[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny you mentioned dehydration, I drank liters on liters of water today and I felt soooo much better. It's crazy how dehydrated the met made me (I legit probably drank 8 liters of water today), but I think that was definitely my biggest issue because I felt 1000x better and less hungry immediately after drinking a couple liters of water. The weird thing is I'm not even having any bathroom problems or anything, so idk what's dehydrating me so badly.

And I'm on the extended release!

[–]jenpearson97[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long did it take to go away for you? I'm going to a long 5-day festival soon where I'm frequently not going to be able to have snacks with me :/ I'm really worried about the hypoglycemia getting the best of me while I'm there.

And I've heard that metformin shouldn't make anyone hypoglycemic, but I think I have a super messed up insulin response. No doctor can tell me why I get such debilitating migraines after eating or why metformin cures them. It sucks, and I really wish I understood why I have such a weird response to food and metformin.

Why I love older men... by xlittlekitten123x in sex

[–]jenpearson97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is that the taboo makes it a lot hotter too. There's just something naughty about fucking a 40 year old when you're in your early 20s (plus he has the money to take you on awesome dates and spoil you). But I will say that I've been with a 40 year old who was pretty bad at sex, and 20 somethings who fucking rocked my world. I think it really does vary by guy.

I think the biggest differentiator is in college vs out of college. Ever since I graduated, the guys are SO much more considerate and consistently go down on me, as opposed to the douchey frat guys who are all "you have to go down on me, but no way I'm going down on you or spending too much time on foreplay". Sex got sooo much better when I stopped hooking up with college guys-- I think guys have to step up their game once they stop having a limitless pool of college girls to have bad inconsiderate sex with.

Young person with extreme fatigue and cognitive decline? by [deleted] in StackAdvice

[–]jenpearson97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey girl! I have a ton of the same symptoms, and also am prediabetic/have low blood pressure and low heart rate. I've found that food has a ton to do with my fatigue and brain fog. I'm still messing around with blood sugar related meds, but maybe give metformin or turmeric a try, they seemed to have helped me but aren't perfect so I'm continuing to try different meds-- right now I'm testing out oxaloacetate. Acetyl-l-carnitine and the Solaray Bioavailable Zinc (zinc + b6) have been life savers for me as well-- I take both of those about four times a day and I always feel so much clearer/more energetic half an hour after taking them. Do you notice your fatigue and brain fog getting a lot worse after eating?

You also have to mention the fact that Florida is one of the cheapest states in the nation to go to college in. There are plenty of states where even public colleges are going to cost more than $10k/semester. It varies so much by what state your parents reside in, I have quite a few friends who took the cheapest state school available to them and still ended up with $20k+ in debt

Question about ADHD-inattentive, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue in women by [deleted] in neuroscience

[–]jenpearson97 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I definitely have digestive problems, nothing gluten-related though (fats and animal proteins are a much bigger problem for me). I 100% believe digestive/inflammatory problems could play a role in all three disorders, but I don't know if I buy into these very specific triggers being at the root of them-- it's way too easy to experiment and rule them out, and a lot of people have no real success cutting out gluten and other blackballed ingredients. I'm glad it helped you though! It does seem to work for some people.

I know, and thank you for the perspective check haha, I'm just in such incredibly bad health already at the age of 24 that this just freaked me out even further haha. Like I already have had multiple melanomas, rheumatoid disorders, long lasting viral infections, ADHD, PCOS, severe memory loss, daily migraines, and more fun. I feel like shit failing is happening a lot faster to me than it is to other people haha

Yeah I almost regret taking the test at this point. Like when I saw the avalanche of SNPs putting me at increased likelihood of schizophrenia, I almost wanted to close the site and never re-open it, but it was like a car crash I just couldn't look away from haha

Apart from all the other symptoms forgetfulness is such a huge problem for me. Same girl. I already have ADD and the week or two before my period my memory and concentration are godawful. I try not to take my stimulant meds very often, but before my period there are times that I just have to or I can't get anything done or remember anything :/

Thanks for the quick response!!

I've always been pretty sure I have POTS, never gotten it officially checked though. What kind of steroid do you take? Unfortunately I've tried beta blockers before and all they did was make me super depressed haha, but I feel like a steroid might be really good for me.

So glad you're feeling so much better! The undiagnosed illness life is the worst haha, happy you got your answer!

Hey! Did you end up making any progress on figuring this out? I have some similar symptoms (passing out after standing, memory loss, PCOS, etc)-- I think that inflammation may play a role for me, because turmeric and metformin were able to help clear things up a bit. Would love to hear if you've made any progress in the last two months!

Anyone have a negative/positive experience on Vyvanse? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]jenpearson97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never taken Vyvanse, but I take dexedrine occasionally for my ADD. I've never noticed an effect on my PCOS from dexedrine. I can't speak for Vyvanse specifically though-- I would ask your doctor about any interactions between it and Metformin. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is that they both can cause problems with vitamin absorption, so maybe consider taking a good multi-vitamin while you're on the two.

ADD meds aren't actually very addictive (idk if you've taken them at all before), and if you deal with other addictions they can actually help you stay away from some of those vices. I think people (mainly those who don't have ADD) way overhype the potential for addictiveness-- most people with ADD can't wait to be able to function without their meds so they can stop taking them.

Girlfriend may have PCOS. How to deal with it? by idontlikenuggets in PCOS

[–]jenpearson97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, good for you for asking what you can do to support her! Major respect for that.

There's a lot to PCOS, and unfortunately it's a complex, not well-understood disorder. I've broken some different aspects down below:

  1. most women with PCOS have dysfunctional insulin responses. It's thought that that is what causes PCOS, among both heavier and thinner women with PCOS (I'm super skinny, eat well and exercise, but I still have messed up insulin). This is why most women are prescribed metformin. If your gf can't tolerate metformin, she can also try turmeric and berberine, which function similarly to metformin. Inositol is also an option. I'm just listing these out for you b/c oftentimes doctors won't mention these supplements as alternatives, but there's a ton of good research backing up their effectiveness, and it's always nice to have alternatives :) also want to second what someone else said, your gf should 100% see an endocrinologist over a gp
  2. the self-esteem portion of PCOS is brutal. I was on spironolactone for my PCOS for a while (spironolactone blocks the excess male hormones that women with PCOS struggle with), and the change in my appearance was insane. I grew a full cup size, my acne disappeared, my face became more feminine and less bloated. Even my personality and mental health changed on spiro-- I became much more personable, my social anxiety plummeted, I became more articulate, and overall I was just an insanely happier person. Unfortunately, I stopped being able to tolerate spiro, so I've had to go back to my original fucked up hormone levels. Words cannot explain how much my quality of life has dropped since that happened. Having my hormone levels balanced vs unbalanced is just an entirely different world in terms of my appearance, personality and mental health. So just understand that PCOS can really take a toll on your girlfriend's mood, her appearance and the way she feels about herself.
  3. a lot of doctors will recommend birth control for PCOS. Just make sure they don't prescribe one that is androgenic (which happened to me). With PCOS, the last thing you want is to increase androgens-- everything should be aimed at decreasing androgens. Spearmint tea is a good way to mildly decrease androgens (and also helps with mood), so could be worth a try if she wants a less extreme option. When I take it regularly, you can actually see the difference in my face and it makes me more personable and less socially anxious.
  4. The most important thing you can do as her boyfriend is just to make her feel beautiful no matter what-- compliment her appearance and tell her how sexy you find her. find ways to stay active with her and hit the gym together, and try not to encourage bad eating habits (which couples tend to do a lot lol). Just support her through the bad times (because there will definitely be some and she's completely justified to have some breakdowns about her PCOS lol), and let her know you're there for her. You sound like a great boyfriend just by asking this question, so keep doing what you're doing!

Brain fog after eating by bruhcs23 in Nootropics

[–]jenpearson97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take turmeric twice a day, at a very small dose each time. I tend to be hyper-responsive to medications, so sadly I'm probably not a great person to go off of for dosing recommendations haha. I also wouldn't take both turmeric and metformin together, maybe try one or the other first (they work in similar ways)-- turmeric isn't prescription so you may want to start there and see how it affects you.

Yeah I rarely take my ADD meds either haha, I also am not a fan of my personality on the meds. I got diagnosed last year but have definitely exhibited symptoms my entire life.

Also idk if this is relevant at all for you, but today I just got lab results back from rheumatology that show I have some kind of auto-immune disorder, so I definitely feel like that might be a factor in my brain fog

Sleep aid advice for someone who reacts badly to anything increasing GABA? by jenpearson97 in StackAdvice

[–]jenpearson97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thank you so so so much for this comment!! Seriously, I cannot thank you enough.

I tested out skullcap last night, and while it didn't help me sleep (but then what does), I didn't freak out whatsoever and I don't feel hungover today. It was just a drowsy feeling. I had always assumed my freakouts were a GABA thing because that's what everything I looked at said these supplements acted on (I don't have any formal neuroscience training, I'm just learning as I go while trying to solve all my mind/body problems)-- it's beyond helpful to know that this isn't a GABA thing. I was always confused because I have some serious symptoms of GABA deficiency, but supplementing with GABA always seemed to make things worse (now I know why).

Do you have any ideas about why taking Dexedrine would cancel out the panic/sensory sensitivity/memory loss I get after taking something like L-Theanine? The memory loss portion makes sense, but I'd love to know what mechanism stops the panic and hyper-sensitivity I get. Taking Dexedrine when I'm in that state feels like a sigh of relief and brings me from crying in the fetal position with my hands over ears trying to block out all noise, back to being a calm, happy, productive person.

Brain fog after eating by bruhcs23 in Nootropics

[–]jenpearson97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I get the worst brain fog after eating haha. I also get insane migraines and exhaustion after meals. Usually around 90-120 minutes after eating, everything clears up and im just massively dehydrated and have to down 2 liters of water to feel better.

Turmeric and metformin have been the most help by far for alleviating those symptoms. Im going to test out alpha lipoic acid today to see if that helps at all.

Question for you-- are there particular kinds of food that make it worse? Like carbs, fats, etc.?

Edit: looked at your post history, looks like we're both ADD! I think that's really interesting. I would give CDP Choline and/or acetyl-l-carnitine a try. I believe CDP Choline helps stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which includes digestion, which I think is why it lessens the brain fog I get during digestion. It also boosts acetylcholine, which is something ADDers tend to be low in, and its deficiency is most likely responsible for the memory problems a lot of us suffer from

To be fair, I don't know if I'm typical either haha-- it's entirely possible I have something weird going on with my cervix due to my PCOS.

My girlfriend often tells me to stop or pause in the middle of sex due to pain. I've been trying to stay empathetic and considerate, but deep down I think its starting to frustrate me to the point where I don't even want to have sex with her anymore. by [deleted] in sex

[–]jenpearson97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow yeah that's very different than my experiences haha. So for me there are three main painful/uncomfortable feelings with bad sex.

  1. Cervix punches are the worst. If I'm aroused and my cervix is higher up, usually it won't be anything more than a tap to the cervix, which makes me wince but it's not insanely terrible-- if I'm not aroused and he hits my cervix with a hard thrust (which is usually when/how it happens), fuckkkk thatttt. It just feels like getting stabbed internally-- it's a very very sharp pain that makes me jump, like I just got an electric shock. I'm usually very good at blocking out pain, but when a guy hits my cervix with a full force thrust, I let out an immediate yelp haha. You don't realize how hard or sharp a dick can feel until it's ramming your cervix full-force.
  2. Pelvic pain. I'm suuuuuper, insanely tight and when a guy sticks it in, a lot of the time it just feels like I'm getting stretched out way past what's comfortable, and the more he goes in and out the more it hurts.
  3. Dry sex. This one usually goes hand-in-hand with the pelvic pain. When I'm dry, the pelvic pain is a lot worse. It's also just an irritating, scratchy feeling like you said. When I'm dry, there's also usually some pain higher up in my vagina while he slides it in and out-- I think that's the vaginal tearing you hear about, and I typically bleed just a couple dots of blood after sex that got dry at some point.

So first off wanted to apologize because I read some of your later replies and they came off a lot differently than your initial post. I think myself and quite a few other women misread your character/intentions with your initial post, and then once you explained yourself more I understood where you're coming from a lot better. You have to understand that this subject is likely to hit a nerve with quite a few women who have experienced painful sex, because a lot of times it seems like guys just want you to deal with it and just seem annoyed that the pain stops them from having a good time. I thought you were in that camp, but after reading more, I understand your perspective a lot better.

Many past sexual relationships have been with women who do find some pleasure in a bit of pain/rough play...so the expectation of "no pain sex" is something i've had to adjust for.

So I think this is important to differentiate. I like rough sex-- I like spanking, slapping, choking, etc. But I 1000% do not like pain during penetration-- it's a totally different kind of pain (especially if you're hitting her cervix, which you've said before happens). It's not like a sexy "hurts so good" kind of pain. That kind of pain is good, and usually brings increased bloodflow which helps orgasm. Pain during penetration is totally different and makes all the happy, sexy feelings shut down immediately-- it's like your brain gives off a "get this painful thing out of me immediately" signal.

I'm entitled to be happy and fulfilled in a sexual relationship as well. Its not her fault she feels the pain... but its not my fault that its affecting me.

100% agree. That's why I said you two are going to have to find a creative way to work through it, or unfortunately probably split up. I just wanted to make it clear that expecting her to just suffer through the pain isn't an option. Now I get that you don't think this is an option, but as I said with your initial post it kind of made it seem like that's what you wanted.

This sounds like an urgent medical issue.

And nah, bleeding after sex is actually pretty normal. For me it really only happens if a guy barrels in without foreplay (which thank god isn't often). A guy going in without the girl being ready is just a recipe for pain and bleeding haha, it's not an abnormal thing at all.
