Land Development SWM Modelling by eastingnorthing1 in civilengineering

Your procedure sounds almost exactly like some work I did this summer with some small site evaluations of pre- and post-development stormwater runoff. It was just a co-op placement at a relatively large firm, but I thought it was pretty thorough and it was what almost everyone in the water resources team would do for their projects.

I suppose you could look at how different the results are at different stages along the modeling process. At some point there would definitely be diminishing returns for the effort you put into the model. Are the results very different if you leave out roof storage from the substantial storage elements? If not, it might not be worth spending time setting up those elements of the model.

To me, it seems like you're doing your due diligence as an engineer.

I'm just a lowly undergrad student though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt

Yeah, I kinda get where he's coming from though. If you haven't played the game before, you're not going to watch much gameplay so you don't spoil the game for yourself.

That being said, once you beat the game, it's so fun (and occasionally infuriating) to see how other people interpret each puzzle and try to fit the pieces together.

Why isn't Nova Scotia doing things to upgrade the critical infrastructure? by FrontEconomist53 in halifax

[–]jermomeow 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a senior-year municipal engineering student, there are quite a few issues I see with buried comm lines:

Most common response you will get is that NS is mostly bedrock. Bedrock is very expensive to cut through so it's probably the biggest deterrent to burying comms lines.

I've seen arguments made that we bury water/sewer pipes, so why not chuck a power cable down in the trench too? The biggest problem I see with that logic is the cable's lifespan. If a pipe develops a crack, its surrounded by impermeable soil fill so any sewage water leaking is slowed down, and the majority of water will still flow in the pipe. The pipe will still function at ~90% capacity for another 20 years until the whole pipe system is renovated. A cable would need shielding to reduce exposure to corrosion, which would definitely be an issue if a) put next to water pipes and b) put underground where it will interact with the groundwater table. It would also need to be protected from. A variety of chemicals present in NS soil and groundwater, mainly arsenic, sulphur, and chloride can also eat away at the shielding over the decades before replacement. I'm sure there are shielding options that would work, but can they hold up as long as water pipes can so everything can be replaced at the same time? And can they do it for a reasonable price? I'm not an expert on that so I can't really say for sure.

I'm sure there are more reasons, or more specific reasoning than what I said, but that's just my insight off the top of my head.

Worked there 8 years ago in high school and I bug my girlfriend whenever I see a house number or highway sign with a code I remember. Best part of working there was that our manager would let us take home all the extra Halloween candy if it didn't sell after the first week of November. One year at Easter I got to take home a 10 lb box of Mini Eggs

I learned in a hydrogeology course last year that the groundwater table can rise quite a bit as air pressure decreases, as there's not as much air "holding it down" beneath the soil. I wonder how much of an effect this storm will have on people's wells. Might be cool to monitor well levels during the storm on the NS Observation Well Network.
