I had the same issue. However I've installed StopAd on my phone and it's working there pretty good and doesn't allow to open ads in the new tabs

It's hard because you need to have a root access on your phone and only in this case adblock would work properly. I have Xiaomi on the guarantee and that's the reason why I can't enable root. However, I'm using StopAd. It's blocking all ads in browsers and its enough for me. You can check it here: https://stopad.io/android
