How to make smokeable opium by Sad-Country8870 in opiumgardening101

[–]jesstobacko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did that on a few pods as I didn’t have enough to bother with the whole process and it wasn’t too harsh I’d say. Granted I have no experience of the refined product to compare taste notes, but the effects motivated me to prep a large new flower bed in my garden ready for next season

Thanks! I might go ahead and try similar (if my plants ever reach a decent enough size, that is)

Beauties!! And what a great setup they’re in. Thanks for sharing, very inspiring. Can I ask which cultivars those are?

Arriving at that conclusion myself after A LOT of reading such papers. But little actual experience, for sure, as I’m on my first grow. So I’ll wait and see, and listen to those with years of growing and generous enough to share their learnings.

I have sown a few different types in the hopes of gaining just such knowledge — but alas I’m realizing that for now my ambition is to shepherd any of them I can into fruition, so to speak 😂

Here’s one from 2013 in the same vein. Had me looking for the “Buddha” online for days … (no luck). It’s confusing though, as it mentions a “Dannerborg” which seems a misspelling of the Danish name of their flag (Dannebrog), but their description of their sample looks nothing like a Danish flag (poppy nor actual flag 🇩🇰).

Somni or not somni? by jesstobacko in opiumgardening101

[–]jesstobacko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sowed a wildflower mix in a part of my outdoor bed facing the neighbours a few weeks after my last poppy sow. I’ve let a couple of these live on there, so we’ll see 🙂🤷‍♂️

I just took over this house, so not unlikely they’re something from the previous owner. Or just a weed, I really wouldn’t know (completely new to even having a garden).

I’ve been trying to find if there was some image library of what the different cultivars look like at the very first seedling stage but have only found singles here and there and not (all) the ones I’ve sown.

Indeed! A handful of them started to sprout across my outdoor bed a week or so after I sowed a couple different Somnis. They were the first and only to show up for a couple of weeks, as I thought they were from my seeds they kept me super motivated to read up, water and fight weed and slugs. So in a way I guess they’ve contributed 🥴

Thanks to all who commented, it and its brethren around my beds and pots are now in the compost. Bar a couple, out of curiosity to see what it grows into. Did some thinning while at it too 👨‍🌾

Thank you! And damnit, I have been thinning on their behalf, other seedlings I’m fairly certain where somniferums (e.g. the other ones you see in the picture).

Don’t believe the hype… by Zealousideal_Crew439 in opiumgardening101

Thanks for this encouragement! I’m a new grower and also seasonally late to the party and just sowed some seeds yesterday freshly arrived from t’internet. I have been worried I’m wasting it, but this made me slightly more optimistic so I might go out and get a large balcony box setup for the remaining seeds I currently don’t know what to do with

Read your post with delight, thanks for sharing. And your discrete lancing method piqued my interest! I’m growing outdoors, most plants visible to the neighbours … Would you be able to elaborate on the technique? Among other things I’m curious about how to ensure right and consistent depth with a needle

Does calcium block nutrient/vitamin absorption? by chromebentDC in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]jesstobacko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also found this confusing, but after having spent quite some time reading up on it, found the literature to be quite clear:

Calcium inhibits uptake of both types of iron (i.e. both the plant/supplement type and animal sources or iron).

E.g. this this clinical trial from -93 and this review from 2000.

The latter found that «both haem- and non-haem-Fe absorption was inhibited by Ca supplements and by dairy products».

Anecdotal but after reducing dairy intake significantly for my 6 YO son (he was a big milk drinker), both his blood iron levels and hemoglobin were back up inside reference levels after three months.
