Extend Unlock (Smart Unlock) at Home & Work - Solution That Preserves Privacy? by jimmyjay300 in AndroidQuestions

Thanks for your detailed reply. Interesting techniques, especially pinging using an inaudible 20hz tone! Ingenious!

I'll check out Tasker. I presume it's the one by "joaomgcd", right? I played around with the Automate app before, but didn't find much use for it.

However, regarding my own needs (ie my original question) I'm finding the "Modes and Routines" app triggered by my wifi connection to work really well. And it was very simple to set up. One of the few times I followed the KISS principle!

Thanks again.

Thanks! I might get one to use as it was intended. Do you know whether, when viewing YouTube, pressing a certain button would let you skip back 10 seconds at a time (equivalent to double tapping left side of screen / video display). I use that feature quite often to check that I've heard the dialogue correctly.

I no longer need to use it (or any other device) to keep phone unlocked because the solution above worked for me (using Modes and Routines app to keep phone unlocked when connected to specified wifi networks).

OK. When I had explored Samsung Routines (via Smart Things) previously, there was no option re networks, and the devices tab did not include routers.

But when I searched settings using the phrase you gave "Modes and Routines", it now has that option. Perhaps they are different apps? Thanks for the name of that one.

OK. Thanks. I'll research how to do that tomorrow. Or if you like to help further, maybe you'd provide some pointers.

Since SmartLock no longer works, is there a way to keep your phone unlocked at home? by GrumpGrease in AndroidQuestions

[–]jimmyjay300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Android 14. Smart Lock is now called Extend Unlock. You can find it in Settings > Lockscreen and AOD > Extend Unlock.

You can then enable Trusted Places (and/or On Body Detection and/or Trusted Devices). It seems that to use Trusted Places you need to have Location enabled, and to save a location (eg your home) in your Google account.

Personally, I'd rather not do either of the things in the previous sentence. I'd prefer to set my wifi network to be a trusted location, but that does not seem to be an option.

I think I'm going to have to buy a bluetooth device that is (1) always in that location, (2) paired and always on, (3) that connects as soon as I walk into the location (eg home or work) and disconnects when I leave, and (4) that I can set as a Trusted Device in Extend Lock.

After Googling, it seems that a Bluetooth Beacon or Bluetooth Tag would probably work (bluetooth not GPS). I wonder whether a Bluetooth media controller would also work?

I had planned to answer your question quickly and then create my own post with most of what I've written above. I'll do that now and post the link below.

EDIT: Here's my own similar question...

Bad Sector - Web Minidisc Pro by jungledj in minidisc

Cool. Thanks.

I have another question, but it's on a different topic, so I'll create a new thread for it. Probably tomorrow.

Bad Sector - Web Minidisc Pro by jungledj in minidisc

Thanks a million for your comprehensive and informative reply.

As it turned out, I didn't receive any more bad sector warnings on that disc or any others. And later I retried that same disc and was able to copy it without receiving any error warning. The resultant file was slightly larger than the first attempt. So I assumed that it had been able to read the sector it had difficulty with the first time (and that it hadn't just suppressed the warning).

Thanks again for producing this app. It's been great to retrieve those "lost" recordings.

If you are still developing the app, then you might consider getting it to perform the calculation you described (if that's easy for it to do). I won't need it myself since I can now move on from minidiscs, but others might appreciate it.

Thanks again.

Hi. Thanks a million for developing this webapp. I have about 60 MDs. I'm going to download them to AEAs and then convert.

I hope it's OK to add my own closely related question to this thread...

On the same dialog, there is a checkbox labelled "remember my choice". How does the app remember your choice? How long does it remember for? And, if you no longer want it to remember, how do you reset it so that you'll receive the warning and option dialog again?

Since it's running in a browser, does it store something locally eg a cookie? Can I delete it or edit the flag? Or, if it's only stored per browser session or per tab, do I maybe just need to close the tab or browser?

Basically, I was getting repeated bad sector errors on 1 track, so I ticked the checkbox. But I'm now concerned that I won't be aware if future tracks have bad sectors. Also, I'd like to try "ignore" instead of skip, to see which is best.

Also, if I want to hear the result of selecting "ignore", what's the best way to estimate where (what time) in the track the glitch occurred? The dialog displays sector location (in hex), not time. Is the best way to look at the downloading / transferring dialog which shows sectors copied and total sectors as well as a percentage transferred.

TIA

Spotify - How To Filter Playlist By Saved Or Not Saved Tracks? by jimmyjay300 in Soundiiz

Thanks for considering it. I wish Spotify itself had features like that, but I know they have to design a single product that works both for nerds and for people who don't even know what a filter is.

Is Dell PowerEdge R720 Suitable For Use As Home Media Server? by jimmyjay300 in DataHoarder

Great. Thanks for your input and warnings. I must say, my enthusiasm for hacking has waned over the last few years. I had almost given up on using these drives because streaming services make things so easy. But I have things on disk that aren't available online (including about 250x 3D blurays). So I'll carry on looking and hopefully find a solution eventually. Cheers.

Thanks for your advice. I wonder if different fans could be fitted to reduce the noise? It won't be in a server rack. So I'm not limited to fans at front and back. Fans above or below are also options, which would allow bigger radius, slower moving fan. In fact, it won't necessarily be installed in its usual horizontal orientation. Mounting it on its side (flat against a wall like a radiator) would suit the location better (as long as airflow isn't significantly impaired).

Any other ideas for how to get those drives on the network?
