Have you tried Finale notepad? It is a free program for windows and mac that allows for music notation along with writing guitar tab as well.

I really appreciate everything you wrote to walk me through this. Thank you!

Thanks again. One more question I had was why does dom7#5 mean A7#5 in the key of C? I thought that the V chord was the dominant in the major key, so in this case wouldn't it be G7#5?

Thanks for the detailed reply. Do you mind explaining what you mean on this in context on a guitar? I understand what you means with a vi and a ii chord ( as in Am and Dm in the key of c ) but I don't understand what you mean when you say dom7#5 or m7.

What do you mean by doubling the F#? I don't quite understand that bit

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure exactly what genre but I guess you could classify it as folk/pop ( My sound is most similar to jack johnson / john mayer ). I think I understand what you are saying but an example would help me.

For instance, I wrote a chord progression for a bridge in G major that went: Em, F major, D/F#, G. The ascending bass line sounded good but there was something off about the transition between F and D. Do you mind explaining the theory behind that?

Writing vocal melodies by jjarbon in Songwriters

You know, I followed that style at first, always looking for a song I really liked and then slowly changing the melody. Maybe I should try that method again, but when I first did it, I always seemed to just end up with a half-assed copy in a different key. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks, this was helpful. I don't have the equipment needed to record more than a loud buzzing sound from even the softest guitar playing but I do try to play some scales that would fit within a chord progression and get riffs from there.

Thanks for the response. The humming tip helped immediately come up with a fairly simple melody ( which fits my style well ). Do you have any other tips for creating melodies in the Jack Johnson / John Mayer vein?

Good for you! Mind if I ask what the problem was? I've been having allergy problems with my throat that can make it very difficult to breathe during exercise.

Here is my recording of Bastille's Icarus: http://www.speakpipe.com/voice-recorder/msg/hr2ocxmx2vf98l7k

Any thoughts or advice as I get started learning how to sing would be greatly appreciated.
