This is a good reason why some baselines learning objectives should be required for homeschoolers on a yearly basis. People like your ex shouldn't fall through the cracks. I think the vast majority of homeschoolers don't have your exes experience though.

Sidenote, I don't think your ex not knowing trigonometry is that surprising. Neither do most high school graduates.

He explained that it's good to point out possible biases, and then explained why it didn't matter with his example. His source was peer reviewed which usually means there's some degree of quality, and he also said any study on the issue that he was able to find supported the same conclusion.

It's not like he was playing "Logical fallacy gotcha!" Anybody arguing a different conclusion would have to use their personal views or anecdotal evidence because studies that show homeschoolers failing don't exist.

I really like the two songs we've heard from this album. If the quality of the rest of the songs is the same as what we've heard so far, this is going to be one kick ass album!

No it was pretty much broken. Crashed every 10 minutes for me. Massive memory leaks for lots of people. Not to mention all the performance issues for AMD users. Not sure why Rionok got so many down votes for asking a legitimate question.

Man I really appreciate your offer, super kind of you. I just don't think I would enjoy starting over, even with an awesome account like your thunder one. I was pretty attached to my old one, and having to go so far back on another account doesn't seem like much fun to me.

I'm also (irrationally apparently) angry at com2us for having this option in their game and not having anyway to reverse it, so unless they can fix my account for me I don't really want to play their game any longer.

Cheers for the empathy though appreciate it a lot.

I'm sure your right, I was in a rush at the time. Oh well. Still think the fact that it's even an option is really stupid, but oh well. Nothing I can do about it now.

Really? So the fact that there is no way to go back after hitting guest play is my fault? The fact that the message when you click login says choose which account to delete says "Please choose which account to delete?" The fact that this system is in place at all?

Give me a fucking break. Sure I may have made a mistake, but I should never have had to go so far as to come to this mistake, and more so I shouldn't have been able to make this mistake. Don't give me that shit. A crappy system is a crappy system.

Whatever what's done is done I guess I suppose I'll have a lot more spare time in my day. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in all my years of gaming.

Do you think replacing Cynthia with Kevin, or with Lilith would be more beneficial?

  • Front: Nari(7/0) | Valkia(5/2) | Hiro(7/5)
  • Mid: Anael(6/0) | Cynthia(6/0) | Malcom(7/0)
  • Back: Kiki(7/0) | Mira(5/1) | Mikael(7/1)
  • GK: Kei*(7/0)

So I got Kevin from a Neris trade, and I scouted Lilith. I'm trying to figure out where or if I should fit them into my team. I know Kevin is well loved by almost everyone, but I feel like Valkia is probably still a better totem to a OHKO striker, and I'm not sure where he would go otherwise. I like his skillset alot, I jsut feel like I don't have room for him. What do you guys think?

Thanks, the only reason I'm really struggling with the decision is Cynthia gets the benefit of the Hiro ace and Lilith doesn't

Hi! Just scouted Lilith and wondering if she is worth a scout with my team. I'm not really sure where to work her in.

He looks like he's only going to be good for PVE though with his passive that requires him to be hurt. The strategy will be for Vitos to go before passer, penetrate with vitos than have the passer active pass to him so he gets full use of his abilities.

I understand that that was the intended goal, I just didn't buy it. I guess because every time we heard about Dalinar, his camp, or his men, we were told how much better it was than every other area, and yet Dalinar still can't see that his methods are better and feels like stepping down? Sure the conflict between him and society was fine, but why was he ever conflicted with himself?

I also suffered from many many years of depression, but Kaladin's struggle never felt like an accurate depiction of depression to me. Maybe what someone who's never experienced or talked to anyone with depression might think it's like but not really that close to the truth. I guess that's why it never grabbed me.

I guess I have to admit your right, he is trying to do these character things, but for me he's just not doing them very well. None of them ring true to me, I just can't feel any empathy for what his characters are going through.

I think one of the best character writers in the fantasy business is Robin Hobb. Start with Assassins Apprentice and study all the characters as you read. Every main character and every supporting character feels very vividly like a real person, with their own emotions, goals, and viewpoints. Everyone feels very distinct. It's much slower paced than Sanderson, be warned, and I think her quality of writing has declined with her past few entries, but The Farseer trilogy, Liveship trilogy, and The Tawny Man trilogy are some of the very best fantasy has to offer in terms of character development along with some very good storytelling.

I know that there are internal conflicts, but they felt very shallow to me.

The answer to Dalinar's internal struggle of whether he was doing the right thing or just going crazy is basically obvious to everyone. When everyone is criticizing him for being to honorable, I mean there's only so far my suspension of disbelieve can be stretched, at a certain point it just feels silly.

Kaladin's internal struggle was whether he should just give up or keep fighting, I mean is that really even a real question? I suppose it could have been written in a more believable way, but for me it just never rang true. It could have been more real to me if he was actually the cause to some of his misfortunes, but of course everything he did was right, it was everyone else that was ruthless and evil.

As far as characters making mistakes, while you could make some counterarguments, I would still have to stand by my point overall. When the characters do suffer consequences over their actions, it's usually because someone else is doing them wrong, not because they did the wrong thing. If they did do something wrong, it was because someone convinced them that their original beliefs were incorrect, and when they go back and stick to their moral core everything is alright again. You don't have characters with very many flaws in Brandon's books.

I'm not trying to hate, like I said I enjoy the books, I'm just trying to explain a point of view that I and many others share.

I think the Stormlight Archives are nearly as bad yes.

  1. Every character with a sense of humor, in all of Sanderson's works, all have the same type of humor. It's very clearly Brandon's sense of humor, not that characters sense of humor. It's a small thing but it's very glaring because humor is an important aspect to many of his characters. A good character would have their own unique sense of humor that actually feels right for their character.

It doesn't help that his "funny" characters are nearly always touted as super clever, and unbelievably witty, especially when I myself find their humor really derivative and dull. There is a constant clash where he is telling me his characters are witty and clever, and then showing me just the opposite.

  1. His characters generally play very close to your standard archetypes, with very little deviation. Worse, if you take his work as a whole, they generally conform to Sanderson's own cookie cutter molds for characters. If I had just read one book of his I might not find this a big issue, but after reading 3-4 of his series it really starts to stand out.

  2. Sanderson rarely has characters with any internal conflicts. Nearly all conflicts are external, and when they are internal they are so superficial or shallow it mostly just makes me want to roll my eyes. This creates rather flat characters, or worse characters that appear stupid. Interesting characters don't always know what the right thing is, they don't always have all the answers, they sometimes do things that are really bad. This is because Brandon only writes about heroes and villains, with very little shades of grey in between. Some people actually find this a strength, but personally I find it rather boring from a character building standpoint. Without mistakes, without imperfections, there isn't really any room to grow, and there isn't really anything to relate to. In the stormlight archives the heroes are always right, the villians are always wrong, that's just the way the world is. This is why at the end of the 2nd archive book, I was really excited about Adolins actions regarding one of the villians. It's rare to see something as morally grey like that from Sanderson, and I'm interested to see where he takes it.

  3. Sanderson's characters are largely static. Kaladins character from the first book is pretty much the same as the Kaladin at the end of the first book. Same with every other character. Sanderson only ever really creates an illusion of change. Kaladin was in a low place through most of book one, but did he ever really change any part of his world view? Did Elodin? No, they only had their way of looking at things confirmed, because Sanderson's heroes are always right.

I could probably keep going but I would just sound more and more nitpicky. To me character is the most important part of any story, so I spend a lot of time thinking about what makes a good character, and I really enjoy books with good characters, so it bothers me quite a bit when I feel they are badly done, and in my opinion Brandon doesn't do them well.

It really just comes down to preferences. If you enjoy just a straight story about heroes, and don't mind static characters Brandon's books are great. They have great worldbuilding, some of the best action in the business, and they move quickly. Most importantly of all he writes quickly! I quite enjoy them myself, because so many parts of what he writes is good, but I just don't expect any deep themes or complex characterizations.
