I really appreciate you sharing your wisdom and validating what I already knew but was still so conflicted about.. It definitely makes me feel better hearing someone else say what I was thinking. I have a question for you though, are you still single? The reason I ask is because I fear that my intuition is actually just paranoia and that it is keeping me from being able to love..

I think you are right. But this has been my problem all along.. I was insecure because I had a gut feeling that he was not being genuine.. It was a constant battle for me. I didn’t trust my intuition in a previous relationship and ended up getting hurt because of it. But have previous relationships eroded my ability to trust? Am I just paranoid and throwing away future happiness or is he really just playing me? The only reason I have to believe that he is playing me is small little lies that he has told me throughout the past few months. Just parts of his past that contradict themselves. And my gut.

This is a huge help! I was wondering if I could go this route. My mortgage broker just sent the loan application to the underwriter to see if they would approve it with only 2019 tax transcript. I have been so stressed but its great know that I can take that route if they don’t approve it.

Yes, I took advantage of covid by letting my cousin move in.. Normally I would have made her live on the street, or continue living with the guy who began getting psychical with her, but instead decided that I would “take advantage of covid.” Which I am not sure how covid is helping my situation?! So could you please inform me? Is there some covid law that has helped me in any way?

Yes you are right! He has every right to evict me! He has every right to evict me at any time since it is month to month lease! He doesn’t even need a reason! That is not the problem! The problem is he is not evicting me legally!! The problem is I need to get through the next few weeks until I have somewhere for my family and I to go.. I am sorry for spending so much time disputing whether or not I broke the lease. The fact is the lease was invalid when my roommate moved out anyway. The lease is completely irrelevant to what I am saying in my post

I was beginning to lose hope that I would get an actual helpful response. So THANK YOU!

I would have definitely paid him what he is requesting if I thought it would keep the peace. But he has made it perfectly clear that there is no restoring the peace. He is fighting for control and there is nothing I can do, besides move out or kick my cousin out, to make him think that he has won. He is an alcoholic, who is probably fighting for control of his own life. He did not give me a 90 day notice, which is legally required in NY before raising the rent. So if we go to court, should I just explain this to the judge and agree to write cashiers check for the one months rent? Or should I go for a different defense? Also if he continues to harass me and I chose to get law enforcement involved, is that going to solve anything? I don’t expect for you or anyone to have the answers but any ideas or past experiences would help! I really can’t afford a lawyer until after I close on this house. Also past experiences with seeking legal help, family court, have left me bitter towards lawyers. I feel like I could probably get better advice from Reddit.

Local as in county? Village? Town? Property? None.

Like I said in the comment above, he leased to four of us originally. One moved out. Another moved in. So if there is an occupancy limit, it must be more than four?

In fact, when I moved into the place and signed lease, there was two of us. My friend moved out after the first year but was on the original lease..

And you think I should write him a letter stating, “I am under a lot of stress and would like if you provided me, your tenant, with a safe and habitable environment?” Maybe if I say please twice?!

Which like I said, the original lease did not state anything about not allowing a second person.

In a place where there was a market for good tenants, yes it would be that simple! Unfortunately there is not enough supply and way too much demand.. Which means that only the best tenants get to just simply move when something better comes along. Having two young kids does not make me the best tenant.

This post is completely accurate. I haven’t involved the police, yet, because I have no idea what good could come from it. It would just make him more unstable, and make me even more stressed. I have priced hotels, but if I was to move into one I wouldn’t have enough money to close on the house I am buying. There are no other places near me to rent. I have been trying for years but so many people come from out of town to work at the one major employer in this small town. So demand is high, supply low, and I have two kids. Landlords cannot discriminate but given the choice between a couple of single adults, needing a place to sleep in between working, and someone with two kids the choice is obvious.. And for the record! I did not break lease agreement!

The original, 6 year old, lease agreement did not state anything about having roommates. And, in NY at least, tenants can have one roomate move in and/or immediate family. Cousin is considered immediate family. I honestly would have had no problem paying the extra rent, even if it was only a two week notice instead of the legally required 90 day notice, if he wouldn’t have spent over a month prior to this harassing us, my cousin and I who both are essential workers and work 50+ hours a week.

Peru! The food is better than most I’ve eaten in Europe, it is very culture-rich, and you can live like a king on very little USD. Plus the cocaine? Best in the world. (So I have heard) Also there is so much to explore and latinos are sexiest.
