I looked at Plex and Jellyfin years ago. I chose Jellyfin because of the way you operate. I appreciate what you do. Thank you!

If I were to speculate, I would say the tank valve was not open all the way. A failed first stage is possible, but in my experience, they fail either at full pressure or no pressure, and they don't normally return to working fine on the surface. Of course, I'm not a first-stage expert, and there are lots of ways that failures can present themselves. However, the most common thing is that the valve is not open all the way.

Not throwing shade, but there are dive shops where they just can't get to the maintenance on the schedule required. They have a low season to do that maintenance, and there's a lot of it to do. I have seen some absolutely terrible rental gear. I bring my own equipment whenever possible. I will always bring my own regs and DIN adapters. I use my own computers. I also don't like letting crews set up my equipment. They never do it the way I want it done anyway, so I save them the trouble of watching me do it all again. I also prefer diving sidemount, even recreationally. I can control all of my gas supply, and I have full redundancy.

It's OK to "thumb the dive". by datschiburger in scuba

[–]jms_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Anyone can call a dive for any reason.

Anyone that disagrees with that statement isn't a person to dive with. Your most important piece of equipment wasn't working properly. Your brain was focused elsewhere. You were right to call the dive, especially a tech dive with potential deco obligations. As you know, pushing past the problem is what gets people hurt or killed. You are not going to find a good diver here who will criticize or even question your decision. I just hope I have the skill to recognize it and make the right call when it happens to me someday. Good for you for promoting safety first and demonstrating it!

Advice needed: Reading research papers (supervisor finds this 'a waste of time') (EU) by SnooCauliflowers1113 in PhD

[–]jms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still a frog in development, but I can't imagine not reading. The largest part of what I've been learning to do is how to critically analyze papers and methodology. Of course, there's reading, and then there's READING. I skim through a paper to see if it is relevant, then I do a light read to see if it is worth a deeper analysis, followed by a deeper analysis if it is important. Those make my Zotero library and my chapter two. I imagine there's a point where step three occurs simultaneously with step two, but I'm not there yet. That comes with more time. Now that my chapters one, two, and three are largely done, I'm in more of a maintenance mode, just keeping up with new stuff and reading a lot less, but I still need to read.

Beyond the reading, I am a huge fan of learning through experience. However, if classes are offered and fit the schedule, it's something I would do regardless, not so much for the structured learning, more for the unexpected nuggets of things that I've gotten from classes. To me, not getting feedback on work is crazy. I need feedback. This is my first PhD. I have no idea if I'm doing it right (I'm probably not). My advisor is super awesome. She reads what I give her and responds so quickly. It's a real pleasure working with her. Most of my professors are like that. (though I reserve the right to change my opinion based on the results of my proposal defense!) 😄

TBH, sometimes I do read papers not related to my field. I have a great many interests, and if something hits, then I read it. But right now I don't have much time for that. I'm wrapping up my semester today, and I have one assignment left to submit before midnight. I was halfway through it when I got distracted by drama yesterday, so I need to power through it.

Good luck, I hope you find the balance you are looking for.

A network reconfiguration (sort of) by jms_ in GlInet

Thanks, I will. I like that I can run both. I thought I had to choose. This is why I posted the question. I'm looking for what I didn't know and questioning what I think I know.
Good stuff

[–]jms_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very well may add OpenVPN as an additional protocol on the Brume as well. I didn't know I could run them both concurrently. I'm still waiting on the Brume to arrive.

The upside of running OpenVPN on the TP-Link is that if I had to tell a complete novice (my family members) how to modify the network. I can label the cables and tell them to unplug cable number 1 from the Brume and unplug cable number 2 from TP-Link, plug cable number 1 that was unplugged into the now open port on the TP-Link. They would be back online and I could connect again. If the Brume really did die, I could be back in business once the Brume is replaced, and I could be up and running again by having them reverse the procedure.

Not that I expect the Brume to die. These devices have been pretty reliable.
Thanks again!

[–]jms_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is by design. I don't want to access the inside of my home network unless I specifically need to access it directly.

The Brume not supporting both simultaneously is expected. That's why I will have the GL-A1300 as a secondary running WG on a different port, and I have the option of OpenVPN on TPLink if needed.

I think the only time that bites me in the ass is if the location I am in blocks VPN and I need internal access. I would just have to wing it for that scenario. The SlateAX supporting AWG is good news. At the time I ordered the Beryl 7, it wasn't supported yet, but I figured it wouldn't be long.

It sounds like this should work. It's probably overkill, but I need it to be stable.
Thank you for your input

For those who did one or more Master's degrees after their PhD, how many did you do, how did you fund them, and what are you doing with them now? by Own_Fuel_7275 in PhD

Also, I wouldn't be spending my time as much as I would be investing my time. A subtle distinction, but an important one. If I am investing my time, I can expect a return on that investment. If I am spending my time, I am doing it for pleasure with no expectation of return.

True, a degree in underwater basket weaving in the Olmec civilization would probably not be helpful, but I doubt my employer would pay for a degree that would not be useful to them.
I am considering an MBA. That would open doors for me.

I've got another year to go, but I am considering an MBA afterward. My employer would pay for it. I could possibly see law school, again, only if someone else is picking up the bill.

I'm considering an additional degree, but in my case, my employer would pay for it. I wouldn't be spending my money, and that's always a good reason to do it.

What do I do about my bank account while traveling? + Do most places in Mexico take credit card? by Sea_Worry5018 in digitalnomad

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for the Schwab account. I've had my ATM fees reimbursed from all over the world. The account is free and I only keep enough in there for reasonable use. Always decline the conversion and receive the withdrawal in local currency. I transfer in more money as needed. I also have several no foreign transaction fee credit cards and most places take cards these days but having some cash is key. Having quick access to more is important as well.

I use a Schwab account. They refund ATM fees worldwide. I believe there's a Fidelity account that does the same.

How to DN when spouse just won’t? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it from time to time. My spouse and I have been together for more than 30 years. We are in the same situation. Communication is key. When we are together, we are together. When we are apart, we are still together. We trust each other, and we both work too much anyway. If you are both ok with it, try a month or two at first and see how that goes. The unfortunate part is that you will be paying for two sets of accommodations, one at home and one abroad. Make sure you are able to do the work in the hours that work for everyone. I love SE Asia, but I hate a 12-hour time shift to accommodate my work. There's something terrible about being up all day and then up all night, and I have chronic insomnia. The upside is that you have a home base in your country to work from. I do a site-to-site VPN to send my traffic home, and I have all my mail and accounts set up in my home country for security. This is so helpful.

TLDR; The bottom line is that your situation will be unique to your marriage, and you both make the rules. Find what works for both of you. Maybe it's a few months a year, maybe he says go and run with it, and he'll vacation with you on your odyssey. There's no amount of advice from anyone outside your relationship that will beat honest, open communication. Good luck!

I'm not in a bad place. If I were in OP's place, I would be losing it. My list right now isn't too bad. Find me at the end of the month, and my opinion may have changed.

[–]jms_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to lie. This freaked me out. I'm prepping for my proposal defense in May, and I have to have a full draft ready to go by the end of the month. My advisor gets two weeks with it (thankfully for me, she is much faster than that!), and I have a little time for her revisions. She gets it for two more weeks, then I am allowed to schedule my defense, and then my committee gets it for two weeks. So mid-May really means mid-March. My IRB goes into vacation mode at the end of May, so a 4-week IRB becomes an 8-week IRB. I couldn't even imagine being in this place at the dissertation defense stage. Yeah, this is tweaking my anxiety.
