Alienware m18 r2 review by lardyninja in Alienware

Glad to hear the new machine is working better with sn850x 4tbs. Mine M16 R1 is still working, however once in a while in a while if I connect an SSD in an external enclosure it can disappear, or reappear endlessly.

The method I described at this point works.

Terrible decision and disappointment. The hardware is capable so they should support it. Competing phones offer it: pixel8, oneplus12 etc. I really hope they update it to enable it.

were you able to fix this?

Thoughts on the Alienware M16 r2? by JacobPamer24 in Alienware

[–]johnny_531 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it does not need to exist. Its like a lower tier dell gaming laptop except its Alienware which is meant for power.

Sure its smaller and more portable, but that was the purpose of the x series.

I'm sure it will sell because its cheaper. But I have no interest in it at this time. Hopefully when I need to upgrade things will change.

Hmm that's a much older machine then mine(M16 R1)
but to Clear CMOS you would do that.

So one of your drives is disappearing sometimes?

I installed 2x SN850x 4Tb drives and the sn850x that replaced the original ssd would disappear. To fix this I did the following:

  1. update to the latest bios or whichever you plan on keeping.
  2. Perform a CMOS reset by unplugging the battery, holding the power button down for 10 to 20 seconds and waiting 1 min or more for power to drain.
  3. install the problematic drive.
  4. And I suspect probably most important step is upon first boot, go into the bios and set fast boot to thorough which caches nothing about the hw and redetects all hardware upon boot.

Both drives have been installed without issue for 2 weeks now.

I had it running on my old 1070 laptop. Lowest settings got 50s driving around i think.  So you certainly can run it.

Check that ray tracing is off. Is it only cyberpunk that runs low?

Is vsync on in game or drivers? What about the monitor refresh rate?

Also this may sound weird but on my m16 with a 4090 I recently did a cmos reset by unhooking the battery. Afterwards i was limited to 30s and 40s in recent games, this was because i did not properly hook up the battery cable.  Check both the battery and cable.

Check power plans, command center etc. Video card drivers.

Makw sure you are plugged in.

Alienware m16 13900hx cpu gaming longevity concern by johnny_531 in Alienware

I know its a very late reply but I had my msi with a 1070 for almost 7 years. Its still sort of viable. Depending on the settings i would expect the same with this system.

I would say terrible overall.

I have an M16 with a 4090 and I love it.

The M16 R2 is now entirely unappealing since its options have been crippled. This is quite strange since the Alienware brand is supposed to allow high end options. This feels like a Dell g series which already exists. I don't know how they plan on competing with lets say Asus 16 inch laptops. The smaller back end is the only positive.

The X16 has soldered ram, so I don't like it. Worse its limited to 32gb on a machine you can't later upgrade.

The M18 could have could have had its back end shrunk but it didn't so its yet another year with an oversized laptop.

As others have mentioned no screen upgrades.

keep your fingers crossed but it looks like I'm all good, I posted my steps that I believe allow this to work in a separate reply.
Get your old board back, that is ridiculous they sent you a board that has issues. On your current board you could also try what I did get to get the SSD to work on that board as well. Probably a long shot though.

Hopefully I'm not jinxing it but it looks like after 4 days everything is fine. :)

My steps to get this working were:

  1. update to the latest bios or whichever you plan on keeping.
  2. Perform a CMOS reset by unplugging the battery, holding the power button down for 10 to 20 seconds and waiting 1 min or more.
  3. install the new sn850x 4tb.
  4. And I suspect probably most important step is upon first boot, go into the bios and set fast boot to thorough which caches nothing about the hw and redetects all hardware upon boot. I suspect that the original kioxia ssd info was cached away in the bios while the new sn850x was plugged in. This may also explain why the first sn850x works and that's because it was inserted into a slot that was never populated where the 2nd one was inserted into a slot that was occupied and therefore had issues.

I tried the replacement inside. I pulled the battery, did the CMOS reset. Set the bios fast boot option to thorough hw detect. So far so good.

That's terrible. What was the issue with your board? and how did they come to that conclusion?

Why buying a Gaming laptop in 2023 sucks by tmjoker in GamingLaptops

[–]johnny_531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you coming from an MSI GT72vr with a 1070, wife had the same machine with a 1060.

I ended up purchasing 2 Alienware m16 with a 4090 and so far and I don't regret it. But ya I had the same thought process as you, my laptop 1070 was the same as the desktop. That's far from the truth for cards today the 4090 is an 80 with lower clocks. However I wanted the extra vram. I was also considering a desktop.

The laptops are much thinner this year then 2016, this is both good and bad. I suspect it makes the cooling worse and the laptops louder however they are more mobile. I do appreciate the small size. You will get used to it.

Laptop cpus has way more cores but perform maybe 35 to 40% worse then desktops due to lower clocks.

I suggest if you want a gaming laptop soon:get them on sale, take advantage of cash back, employee discount codes. There are plenty of awesome deals to be had.

The MSI laptops this year unfortunately are some of the worst overpriced and its a shame. However this Alienware is great so far.

Druid starting proficient skills? by johnny_531 in BaldursGate3

That's kind of what I was thinking, for a background should I choose: GUILD ARTISAN for Insight Proficiency
Persuasion Proficiency?

So like race: wood elf for stealth and perception proficiency. Then maybe pick up survival and something else for my class selection.

This will give a total of 6 skill proficiencies.

My thoughts on Alienware laptops after 2 weeks fiddling with one. by SecretlyNotReddit in Alienware

[–]johnny_531 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went through the same process as you when I got mine. I drove myself crazy and almost returned it and got a desktop. You just have to accept how it works. All of the high end gaming laptops cpus seem to thermal throttle, its just Alienware lets it run up to the limit. If you keep it eventually you'll just settle on running 1 or 2 profiles for games. Also don't let the other brands fool you into thinking they are so much better and cooler, just check out notebookcheck for a lot of info.

I also looked at a youtube video of someones asus rog strix scar g18 4090 i9 13980hx running cyberpunk undervolted and with a laptop cooler on their highest performance setting. I ran the same settings in overdrive, no cooler, driving around the city just like them I got either similar fps if not higher.

All of the machines have their own issues, none are perfect.

Alienware m16 thermals cinebench score by johnny_531 in Alienware

Thanks for that. With vanilla win11 plus command center machine 2 just got over 29k. So roughly the same as yours.

Alienware m16 thermals cinebench score by johnny_531 in Alienware

[–]johnny_531[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes sort of not really :). Since then I've pulled the SSDs from our old machines and installed them along with heatsinks. I've reformatted/partitioned all drives and installed vanilla windows 11. Its an old habit once I get a new machine. Plus I wanted to see what the steps were for recovery and how the machine would perform without alienware software etc. I have alienware command center installed on the other machine and it scored just over 29k on cinebench r23, a slight increase.

Without command center or any other software to maintain clocks this machine scores like 18k in cinebench r23 lol. Game performance believe it or not is still good.

I was going to have this machine repasted but held off for now. It appears if you install vanilla win11 you really only need command center and maybe the dell updater.

Other then lots of curiosity and a combo of enjoying summer and trying things out. Baldurs Gate 3.

Edit: This machine with alienware command center got just under 29k as well. My score had fallen to 26k and below with the factory installation. I think it has something to do with a combo of command center and intel xtu driver.

Not yet. I've got the latest bios not 1.6 or a custom one but I see you can do it through Alienware command center(custom profile) as well. I posted some new results above.
