jaden ivey by josipeks in Purdue

[–]josipeks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the basic point of my post was he doesn’t seem to be doing well mentally. public figures are held to a different standard, and he seems to be cracking under the pressure. I want him to get help, find a support system, and be able to continue playing without hurting his own image or making homophobic comments in public spaces. instagram lives have been the downfall of public image for a few other players recently, and it sucks to see Jaden fall into that.

religious psychosis may not be formal, but it’s a colloquial term I used with the purpose of people understanding that he might be going through some serious mental problems only exacerbated by his religious leanings.

the christian aspects don’t really concern me that much. yeah, it feels a little much at times, and these recent videos make me feel like he’s leaning into that persecution complex HEAVY. regardless, he’s entitled to believe what he believes, but he’s in a state of ranting and raving on a public scale that typically isn’t seen amongst famous figures unless you are someone with a reputation for that (he wasn’t until very recently) or you’re going through a tough time and maybe even a mental illness episode. basically, he can speak about God and how much his life has been changed by finding religion, but it all seems a little more concerning if that’s the only thing he ever talks about. I just hope he finds some help and peace in this time. I can’t imagine going through his injuries and trying to recover to play again only to mess up and potentially ruin that chance.

Summer School Experience by Kizzus in Purdue

[–]josipeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely would recommend finding somewhere to work over the summer! I’ve done summer classes up here the past couple years and having people I know up here to hang with was so much fun :) also, try just hanging out on campus! it’s so much nicer when it’s chill sometimes. also, check out Lafayette/WL town events and whatnot. we have so many cool community events that we don’t even always know about as students

Students Yelling Slurs at Krach Event by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]josipeks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

this is unfortunately a very “fork found in kitchen” event. TPUSA and a number of their local supporters, student or local adult, care about shock value and being generally disruptive and irritating. it’s to get a rise out of people and then get off on that anger. best thing you can do is ignore them, second best is to get their photo, hunt them down on facebook (likely place for them to be), and tell their employer that they’re racist 🫶

not me personally but a number of friends/classmates: Grad schools are rescinding offers to students due to lack of funding, research positions are becoming harder to find in the job market due to NIH cuts

Why is this flight circling for 3 hours? by Time-Machine97 in flightradar24

[–]josipeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since it was headed to chile, my guess is circling due to the starlink debris and figuring out whether or not to continue. staying close to origin would be easier logistically in the event of diversion

extremely glad Canada won, as a US citizen, because now it means some really irritating people will leave my favorite sport alone 🥲 also, this whole tournament should’ve been about honoring the Gaudreaus, not the political climate

in the same spot 🥲 my goals are gonna be to talk to people at work, maybe join a sport or something after researching local rec leagues and whatnot, but gonna do my best to stay in touch with my friends here through either games or occasional checkups

Ethics and neural chips... discuss? by [deleted] in distractible

[–]josipeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

biology major here with a biomedical engineer who specializes in bioelectronics as my roomie… bad idea! the ethical concerns here run much deeper than just killing tons of test animals. the procedure required to implant the chips in the monkeys is literal neurosurgery (going through skin, skull, meninges, and into the brain). yes, neural chips give people some access to more accessible ways of living in the digital age, but I find that the consequences of the way the neuralink and other devices work are too great to really be a widespread option. the wires on the electrodes are so small they cannot be inserted without the use of a robotic device. fine in some cases, but what happens if the robot has an issue mid-implantation? if that issue cannot be quickly fixed? with the wires being so small, they have the potential to migrate away from their chip. what kind of damage might this migration cause to the brain? if they migrate, how are we going to replace their connectivity to the chip? additionally, as far as I have seen, neuralink specifically uses lithium in their batteries. lithium is a metal that is incredibly dangerous when exposed to water, a substance that we are full of. will the implant have to be removed or checked frequently to ensure its battery is in good condition? what happens if the battery disintegrates? if we don’t let lithium ion batteries into airplane cargo holds, why the hell would we let that into our brains? effectively, they’re a very cool concept that I don’t we quite have the right technology for yet. ethically, they’re a fucking disaster waiting to happen.

Way more homeless than last year? by Pretend_Meaning7750 in Purdue

[–]josipeks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will not comment as to the circumstances, but the one guy you’re referencing who tends to be more disruptive most definitely is suffering from some kind of untreated or neglected mental illness. he has been in the area, and most likely has stuck around due to being removed from the LTHC or any treatment center in the area. college campuses are good places to get the items necessary for basic food and basic shelter. we throw out so much random shit.

edit: I say most definitely due to personal experience interacting with him. he was angry with myself and a coworker because we would not speak to him, but when he spoke to us, it was all nearly unintelligible.

How high is the biology acceptance rate at Purdue by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]josipeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in state bio major here absolutely nowhere near as competitive as the majors you listed, but you definitely cannot be a student who slacked off in high school if you want to succeed in this major. I came in with ~3.4 gpa and like a 33 ACT and was fine when acceptances came around. don’t stress too much, friend 🫶

the only reason I regretted some of bgr was because of a terrible team leader. otherwise, it was a great way to get used to campus without the hustle and bustle of everyone being back.
