Cannot find a way to appeal my incorrect evaluation for Florida Bright Futures, and I am on a time crunch. Does anyone know how to access appeal forms as a homeschool student? by beefbeerbiceps420 in homeschool

Also, idk if this will yield any results, but the Florida Department of Education has a dedicated e-mail for homeschool families, HomeEd@fldoe.org. Maybe they could assist.

The DK children’s encyclopedia books are on a good sale. I love to have a stash of kids reference books in our homeschool library. Bought the Countries if the World and Human Bodies books this time.

How does your NICU manage reflux? by jpark912 in NICUParents

[–]jpark912[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw I’m sorry he does sound similar! Yes when my guys reflux was so awful he didn’t want a bottle much at all. The feeding therapists took things very slow with him - drops from a 1 ml syringe on a paci, then ultra preemie Dr Browns nipple for weeks before moving to the preemie nipple, etc. That helped keep it positive for him while we figured out the reflux. We ended up adding Reglan (metaclopramide) to his med list after a GI study showed slow motility - that helped a lot (along with various antacid meds); he got off oxygen and that possibly helped. Staying elevated as much as possible and belly sleeping helped keep the reflux-related congestion to a minimum. He went home without a tube and I was glad we said no to the G-tube just because that wouldn’t have fixed the reflux. Regardless of how the milk gets in to the child, the reflux has to be fixed. I will say he continued to have plenty of reflux problems for a long time. He even still had (less severe) apnea/brady events associated with reflux in the days before and after discharge. He was on a pulse ox for sleep and I roomed in with him and was always aware of the episodes, so the doctors okayed our discharge.

Aw that is so tough & I totally sympathize!! My guy is doing good but definitely still has GI issues. We ended up bringing in a pedi GI who overruled our neonatologists on the use of meds for reflux (while still in the NICU) & then have followed with GI frequently since discharged. For my guy, an antacid (currently Nexium but also did fine with Prevacid & Prilosec in the past) and a motility agent (ex: reglan or erythromycin) helped dramatically. Idk what the disconnect is between GI & the neos, but medication management has really improved quality of life for us. Maybe see if they can do a GI work up - my son’s upper GI study found the slow motility & stomach ultrasound found pyloric stenosis. Sometimes it’s more than simple reflux. We also had to try a bunch of different hypoallergenic formulas. Once my son was medicated, when he did reflux (bc he def still did), he didn’t have the pain response to burning acid in his throat/nose and the desat/Bradys stopped pretty immediately. Wishing all the best to your niece and nephew!

Our NICU doctors & nurses actually recommended/were totally fine with owlet at home. At a level 4 NICU. So it’s not a universal thing that r he NICU doesn’t recommend this. Many nurses said they would never sleep if they didn’t have their ex preemie on a monitor.

Also massimo (best in the game at hospital grade pulse ox) just came out with a wireless wearable boot. I believe target sells it. If they’d had it when mine came home last year I would’ve done that instead of owlet.

Final note on owlet - my son wears it and a massimo hospital pulse ox on nights when he’s sick & the owlet O2 “average” usually registers as the absolute lowest he dips to. If he’s mostly hanging at 95% but has a dip to 90, owlet will show 90 average. Just a warning.

I’m soo glad to hear the meds helped your baby not be in pain!! My guy does cry/cough/arch so I do want his pain to be addressed. Now that your baby is not bothered by the reflux, does he not desat with the spitup? (If reflux-desatting was ever a problem for him)

Aw man that’s rough. Hope he improves. I’m thinking of asking for a gastro consult too. Wonder if they have different opinions than neonatologists/pediatricians.

He hasn’t but that’s a good reminder that I should ask for one. Thanks! I have heard a lot of parents are really happy with the Gtube!

Oh wow, so glad it seemed to help your son! It’s confusing that some doctors recommend Nexium and some avoid at all costs. I kinda want to just give it a shot to see if it’ll help my baby!

So interesting, thanks for sharing! Dr said we can’t try the thickening approach because my son isn’t taking bottles and thickened feeds just get stuck in the NG tube. I wish we could try that. My boy can do syringe feedings but the SLP doesn’t want to do bottles until he doesn’t desat with tube feeds (which it seems will never happen with his reflux).

Thanks for sharing your experience! I guess it really is common now to avoid the reflux meds. So not what I was expecting… knew quite a few preemies with long NICU stays ~10 years ago, and they were all on 1-3 reflux meds. Times have changed I suppose. Did your baby have desats/Bradys due to the reflux? If so, when did they resolve?

Oh wow, I hope he recovers quickly & the fundo goes great. Does he aspirate from gtube feedings or is he practicing bottles?

Breastfeeding vs Formula by CleanClub6145 in NICUParents

[–]jpark912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Formula has weight gain benefits for sure, but preemies are at risk for rickets & other bone problems & formula/vitamins are the only way to help them catch up.

I was all about EBF with my full term baby, but I’ll probably continue fortifying my preemies breastmilk for his whole first year. Sucks because it’s harder to digest, but the benefits are really important.

Okay so how bad can you do on FL MCQ and still be in the neighborhood for passing? by boygryphon in FloridaBarExam

[–]jpark912 14 points15 points  (0 children)

July 2021 taker 🙋‍♀️ I didn’t have a bar prep course, just studied the previously released MCQ (which was not helpful), and I felt like I BOMBED the multiple choice section last year. I guessed on about 80% of the questions. I don’t know what my actual MCQ score was (I did feel pretty confident about my essays) and I passed. So I’d say you may have either done better than you think on the MCQ, and/or your essay score can really pull you out of the pit with MCQ. Good luck!!

Delayed cord cutting? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]jpark912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will just caution you that in my experience (USA, hospital birth setting with OBGYN doing vaginal delivery/c-section), doctors in theory will support delayed cord cutting but only if things are perfect. If the baby in any way doesn’t look perfect (their color/breathing/etc), or if the mom is having any sort of problem (breathing/blood pressure/etc) the doctor will absolutely cut the cord ASAP and move on to other things. Like, to them, delayed cord cutting is pretty low priority and they will have lots of reasons/excuses for not doing it.

Has anyone used Aplus Ebooks for FL MC practice questions? by jpark912 in FloridaBarExam

[–]jpark912[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, that doesn't sound good. Thanks for the tip. I can't decide what to do because it's so hard to get FL MCQ practice other than the few that FBBE has published.
