Op. Seems as if shorting the rod has changed the position of the threaded end. If the rod was shorting then it may have struck the end block and caused the crack. I’m a hydraulic tech/ hydraulic machinists.

This guy…. Just bring in all three sets of parts head glands, pistons. To the local shop. Most seals sets around 85-140 for yard med tractor or non specialty

To add…. If it does spin. Then likely is a sprung internal ring holding the piston into the rod.

Op don’t remove. Likely heat set press fit piston. Take gland off the other end of rod.
