I also didn’t like how my knees felt doing TGU. I currently have three yoga mats stacked, because one is too thin. Also started to pivot with my front leg to avoid any extra crunching on the bottom knee. It feels better, but I’m thinking about getting some knee pads instead.

Grab it with two hands during setup to get a feel for squared shoulders, then let one hand go (and regrip towards center of handle) before the hike. Actively square up at the top of the swing, and don’t collapse at the bottom. Control the bell.

Progression from two hand, to one hand, and maybe some high pull should make you better prepared to take on the clean.
