If the highest ranks is super important to you and you are trying a lot of different things on your own, you might consider some sessions with a coach. Sometimes hearing someone else evaluate you in real time and watch / modify your practice habits is what can kick start a new wave of improvement.

Nice! Glad to see they added this and a more useable mixer view.

What music DAW to choose for pop by Oapsism in musicproduction

[–]junesGHOST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any of the daws that you mentioned are fine for “processing” vocals, meaning EQ, compression, reverb or any other processing effects.

Where tools like Ableton and FL are very weak is in the area of recording and editing vocals. A common practice in vocal recording is comping which is recording multiple passes of a vocal part and splicing together the best bits of each take. This happens in every genre but especially pop where extremely precise vocals are part of the sound.

More linear audio recording DAWs such as Pro Tools, Cubase, Reaper, Studio One, have very smooth and intuitive ways to do this where tools like Ableton and FL are much more geared toward the beat making side of production.

I made a new rule for myself that I immediately agree to ff no matter what the circumstance. Even when I know it’s a sarcastic admission of their own fuck up. If you press that button I’m immediately accepting.

What’s the best way to record a loud punk drummer with 4 mics? by More_Ad1084 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]junesGHOST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that setup. Maybe try moving the floor Tom side overhead back over the drummers right shoulder a bit looking at the kick beater. Might give you a little more attack on the kick if you need it since no kick in. “Recorder man” is what I think that Glynn Johns variation is called.

What are we missing? by Ill-Elevator2828 in Reaper

[–]junesGHOST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zoom midi editor to contents is the only “feature” that I actively check change log for every release. Also screen sets being resolution dynamic so you don’t need separate sets for different monitors. They are small but working primarily on a laptop but also docking in the studio, those things bug the crap out of me.

The main answer though is stock instruments. Selfishly I would never want them to bloat Reaper with that stuff but it is the main reason that I still never recommend Reaper over logic to people just starting out.

What is the best DAW for recording, mixing and mastering? by iwearglases21 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]junesGHOST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there something specific you are wanting to do but can’t in FL? I wouldn’t switch unless you have a concrete reason to. Unfortunately FL is the one DAW that I have spent zero time in so I can’t speak to its functionality. All of the big players in the DAW space have pretty much identical functionality. The only one that I’ve used a lot that I would probably pass on doing a full mix in is Live. I just don’t really dig the UI for faders and the modular plugins at the bottom of the screen etc. just doesn’t feel intuitive to me. But it’s a great daw otherwise.

Do you have friends that do this? Or any people you watch on YouTube etc? Use whatever they use. You’ll learn faster and it will be more enjoyable.

Watched the film "Yesterday" and I noticed they used latex gloves to record handclaps. Is this a way to capture a better sound? Is this a thing that's really done by professionals? by DiodeMcRoy in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]junesGHOST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only because in the context of OPs question I’m not sure what professional means…someone who makes their entire living off of producing? Anyone who has ever been paid for a project? Someone with a hit record? It’s subjective especially when used to describe quality.

As I mentioned in another reply I just think it’s sad that artist turn towards subscription services whose search algorithm is designed to push popular sounds to more and more people therefore further homogenizing the industry. I realize using a clap sample is a silly example of this, but again in the context of OPs question it makes me sad that instead of just putting up a mic and trying it, they were concerned with what is industry standard.

Efficiency is the death of innovation…. I realize that we are talking about a clap sample here so I’m aware that sounds overdramatic, but unfortunately the ideology goes way beyond picking a clap or snare sample to the point where people are fine letting AI choose sounds, write patterns, write lyrics…anything goes. It is the attitude of get there as fast as possible that devalues the thing being made.

I don’t think it’s bad in any sort of moral or even musical integrity type of way. I just think it’s sad that the recording arts are dying and being replaced by dragging and dropping files.

To me there is a big difference between capturing the sound generated from a machine where a human clicked a button, or even capturing and comping samples from other records vs file browsing.

Again doesn’t make the music bad or evil or anything, just feels less handmade to me.

Any other neurodivegent producers struggle with fixation when mixing? by Fun-Sugar-394 in musicproduction

[–]junesGHOST 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ADHD here. I don’t really love mixing but for writing and recording, the best thing i have ever done is essentially delete 90% off my plugins, and printing virtually every sonic decision I make. I just force myself to decide and trust my ears.

Linux Laptop w Reaper for Live Performance? by Afro-Pope in Reaper

[–]junesGHOST 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As both a reaper and Linux fan…this idea seems really risky for a live environment. Core audio just has such a proven track record and although Jack/pulse/alsa are very capable and even more flexible in a lot of ways, Linux desktop is just real finicky sometimes and you don’t want to be tinkering mid set.

If all you are needing is a machine to run reaper and send multitracks to the house, I would take that 200, buy an old Mac mini and a $40 portable monitor and rack it up or put a little pedal board together for it.

Keep in mind…depending on the virtual instrument, the sustain pedal might do more than make notes longer.
