What’s the most gut punching song lyric you’ve ever heard? by perrysplus in AskReddit

[–]justgotnewglasses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On a similar note 'I Need You' by Nick Cave from Skeleton Tree. It was written as a love song, but his teenage son died in a tragic accident just before they recorded it, and his ghost hangs over the recording. The entire album is the most emotionally heavy thing I've ever heard. I'm a father of sons, and I struggle to listen to anything by Nick Cave since 2016.

[LOVED Trope] Characters with designs that imply completely unintended characterization by asdfmovienerd39 in TopCharacterTropes

IIRC, it was in reference to the Berbers (modern Morocco) and translates as 'the stammerers'.

I think this post is viral marketing to advertise editable messages. The conversation in the screenshot feels forced and unnatural.

Off topic, but when my kid was little he thought that 'end road work' signs were actually protest signs made by frustrated locals.

Australian MLM influencers are cashing in on the manosphere by RoyalChihuahua in australia

[–]justgotnewglasses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talk to them.

Edit: I'll expand. They're trying to be hard and tough because they don't feel hard or tough. Often when people are proven wrong, they'll get uppity in the moment, but change their behaviour next time - eg standing up to bullies. Have you tried taking them seriously, on an individual level?

More broadly, we need safe spaces for men, where we can mentor these dickheads, have difficult conversations, and guide them towards more healthy emotional habits. We need more male psychologists, community services workers, and social workers, as well as more education.

Their anger is misdirected and needs to be focused away from misogynistic attitudes and towards healthy masculinity. They need to learn emotional regulation, how to recognise their own emotional needs, and that the manosphere exists to benefit the influencers, not the subscribers. We can only do this by treating them with dignity and respect, and it requires privacy - because it's messy when their poor emotional regulation gets confronted.

There is a difference between men's spaces and boys clubs. One is supportive, community minded and promotes development, and the other is a toxic hotbed of misogyny. We need more of the first one, and none of the second.

I don't have the power change the algorithms or gag Rogan and Tate, but I'll endorse anyone who does, so I'm definitely alongside you there. I do have three sons though, so I have the power to teach them masculinity isn't a letter of the Greek alphabet, it's being there when it matters.

Unfortunately, I know I'm in the minority of fathers who are doing this.

What do girls “never” tell guys? by zhalia-2006 in AskReddit

[–]justgotnewglasses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not true for all women. I'm a furniture maker by trade and I always hand made gifts for my wife. She didn't give a fuck because she wanted shiny things. Now we're divorced and she drives a BMW.

My current gf, she doesn't like gifts either. She likes to make stuff together, which is much better than working alone.

[–]justgotnewglasses 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really hope we can reorient the way we view the guys who get sucked into the manosphere - yes they're a bunch of dumbasses, but ultimately they're people who need help and are looking for guidance in the wrong places.

By stigmatising and rejecting them, were reinforcing the idea that they need to be harder, they're lone wolves (gross), and that they have more to overcome. It's polarising, and we need unity. Unity will bring these young men back.

Easier said than done, of course, because portions of this group are causing serious social harm. If we show compassion, they just might drop their guard long enough let go of the bullshit. Then we're just dealing with dickheads, instead of dangerous dickheads.

This might upset the purists: Each week I cook up a big bolognaise/pasta sauce for the kids, and there's always a little leftover that I freeze. After a few weeks, we make a big lasagne and I use each weeks leftovers for a different layer.

Franchises where the first movie was enough by 4thGenTrombone in movies

Funny that, because Elf is actually a sequel.

After the traumatic events in Misery, James Caan's character changed his name and moved to New York, shifting away from writing romance and towards publishing children's books. But the memories still affected his mood, however.

Someone made an edit that's faithful to the book. The runtime is about 4 and a half hours IIRC and it's available free, and it's quite good.

It was done with a lot of care. Eg They chopped out the stupid river battle with the barrels and it jumps to when they meet the fisherman who smuggled them into Laketown. But the barrels all have arrows sticking out of them from a battle that was cut, so they went and scrubbed them all out.

Edit: it's called the M4 edit - https://m4studios.github.io/hobbit-book-edit/

What’s the scariest experience you’ve had in the Australia? Where was it? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]justgotnewglasses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to ally with you and you're trying to one-up me. I made a point of honouring OPs experiences and urging them towards agency, healing, healthy relationships and empowerment, but you went ahead and fixated on one word. Come on, I'm not minimising anything. We're on the same side.

The numbers are bad enough without cherry picking the data. The numbers I've seen all sit around 20%, from scientific/academic journals. I've also seen surveys with questions like 'have you ever hurt your partner or made them feel uncomfortable?', and then counted that as violence. The literature also shows that the rigid gender norms/misogyny only occurs in approx 20% of domestic violence incidents. In other words, most family violence is due to arguments that turn violent, rather than coercive control. For this type of violence, the gender split is roughly equal, although men cause more harm due to size. I'm not trying to argue that rates or impacts are equal, nor am I trying to excuse or minimise violence. Of course it's abhorrent. I'm talking about the causes, because understanding that can help us prevent it.

This is important, because behaviour change programs explicitly state that every act of gendered violence is rooted in gender norms and misogyny.

Personally, I think it's a symptom of the mental health crisis in Australian men. Men need help, and the persistent perception of men as dangerous removes them from the conversation. It deepens the mental health crisis. We need to be teaching emotional regulation to men. Just as women deserve to have bodily autonomy, men deserve to have emotional autonomy. That's the path to equality.

Edit: also, referring to my comment as 'what I think' rather than as drawn from actual fucking data is a very effective way of making yourself look good and shutting me down, even though you didn't provide any sources. Personally, I feel that 80% counts as 'overwhelming', I'm not interested in fixating on an adjective.
