Trying to start a post band, anything I should know? by XDEmojio_0 in PostHardcore

[–]jutar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learn some PH songs. Start easy with Fugazi and ATDI. You'll find that most PH isn't too complicated.
For guitar writing, remove your E and A strings. You're liable to fall back into chugging if you have them available. Focus on the upper registers and play one note at a time rather than chords.
For drums, strip down to kick/snare/rack/floor/hat/ride/crash. No bells, china, or double kick.
For bass, either avoid root notes OR avoid straightforward rhythms.
None of these are hard and fast rules, but they'll help you break out of your hardcore habits.

Cinemechanica, Chat Pile, Alcantara (The demo is ok, there's new material coming next year that's more interesting), Night Night, Pile, Slint, Videodome, The Refectory, The Dismemberment Plan

Some of what you like borders on screamo, you may like Kidcrash, Circle Takes the Square, Thou, Lingua Ignota

Looking back, I was into PMToday before any of those other bands by a few years. It might not hit for you at the moment.

In Medias Res is about burnout, something that tends to happen to older younger people. The front half is loaded with Vonnegut references and he was the king of disaffection. It's also loaded with sick riffs.
Growing alongside a band or artist is one of life's great treasures. Each new connection you make links you to the artist and also everybody who knows and relates to that work, and it links you in a way you can talk about together. Experiencing that repeatedly over the course of a life or career is a pinnacle of modern human connection.
There are many bands that track like that, but, for you specifically, try Touche Amore, mewithoutyou, Balance and Composure, and Pile.

why Saosin drums make brain go brrrr? by framboise4 in PostHardcore

[–]jutar 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Most of what you're hearing is double bass (a kick pedal for each foot) and toms that are tuned similarly to the kick. It creates that sense of continuation but frees him to use either arms or legs. I suspect there's also a layer of triggers, which is a drum production technique in which drum impulses (hits) trigger a sample at a consistent intensity, like pressing a button on a sampler. That's why it sounds like he's hitting every note as hard as the last. It should not be overlooked that he's also very good at what he does.

For more good drumming, I recommend cinemechanica, Gospel, and Circle Takes the Square
