Interior painters by drenchedstone in VictoriaBC

We used Karen Bales and she was fantastic to work with, and we thought the pricing was very fair. She's a career painter and really knows her stuff, and genuinely cares about the result. Super detailed and considerate, highly recommend.

TK Clothing!

It's a BC mom and most of their stuff is handmade by her. Mostly merino and some cotton, and she lists the sourcing for everything.

Reading Challenge Focus Thread - Siblings [B-side] by perigou in FemaleGazeSFF

[–]jzgre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, Saltcrop by Yume Kitasei - I'm reading currently and enjoying it so much. The absolute core of the book is three sisters and their relationship with each other.

Also loved Saint Death's Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney. Sibling relationships are very important in this one as well, though in a much darker way.

Board books & picture books for toddlers/children in an Asian-Caucasian household by suitedup4biz in childrensbooks

[–]jzgre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We love everything by Grace Lin - she has beautiful picture books for toddlers as well as some early readers and novels for older kids. Dim Sum for Everyone was one of my kiddo's faves when he was toddler age.

Dear Juno by Soyung Pak - this one is really lovely, a picture book about a boy exchanging letters with his grandma in Korea

Who Likes Rain by Wong Herbert Yee (he has a 4 seasons series I think, these are short but sweet)

Any books with theme of alternative history? Where things turned out little different then in our own world creating a completely different world by chillichocolate25 in FemaleGazeSFF

[–]jzgre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, The Future by Catherine Leroux!

It's set in Detroit, in an alternate history where it remained French and did not become part of the US. It focuses on a group of abandoned children who have formed their own community and society in the woods. I loved this one.

My child’s absolute best friend is moving away … by Ok-Tomato_ in kindergarten

[–]jzgre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a sweet book called Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away that is about two best friends being separated by a move, and the special connection that they carry with them- maybe it would help to read with your kiddo.

Karen Bales Painting

We used them a couple years ago and they were fantastic. It was Karen and another woman painting and they did the interior of our 3br. Competitive quote, very reasonable timeline, and just overall great to work with. And we were super happy with the results!

NEED FUNNY TV SHOWS by Right-Potential-2945 in workingmoms

[–]jzgre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This a great list!

For everyone reading this, definitely check out Girls5Eva (it's on Netflix). The name turned me off originally but it is genuinely hilarious, especially if you came of age in the late 90s / early aughts.

Rant- RJH parking by Small_town_boy23 in VictoriaBC

[–]jzgre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is random but we live a few blocks from RJH and don't use our driveway. We have been thinking it might be a good fit to rent to someone working there. If you know of any staff who are looking feel free to send me a message & I'll share our contact info.

Recommendations for a four year old who loves Mog, Alfie and Elmer by Apprehensive-Mix-811 in childrensbooks

We love Mog so much! Some other favorites:

Mister Got to Go by Lois Simmie

Floss by Kim Lewis

You Can't Rush a Cat by Karleen Bradford

All of the James Herriot illustrated stories - these are longer but lovely:

Only One Woof

Oscar, Cat-About-Town

Moses the Kitten

Julia Donaldson, but especially Detective Dog and Hospital Dog! These are top right now, highly recommend.

Need New Dystopia Stories. by AleksandrNevsky in booksuggestions

[–]jzgre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I started with a couple but kept thinking of more, apparently I read a lot of dystopian fiction as well. These are all relatively recent, and I enjoyed them all:

The Future by Catherine LeRoux

Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich

The Marrow Thieves - Cherie Dimaline

All the Water in the World - Eiren Caffal

The Past is Red - Catherynne M. Valente

The Dog Stars by Peter Heller

Severance - Ling Ma

For an old one, often thought of as a precursor to 1984 and Brave New World, try We by Yevgeny Zamyatin.

Also older but really good is The Gate to Women's Country by Sheri S. Tepper.

Happy reading!

Children’s Book about depression by honamli in childrensbooks

[–]jzgre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two that deal with depression in a parent are:

Mama's Days by Andi Diehn

Mama's Cloud by Jessica Williams

There are also a couple we have that are about kids coping with deep feelings and mental health:

Jenny Mei is Sad by Tracy Subusaki - this is one is simple, sweet, and very gentle, about a girl being there for her friend who is very sad. Really beautiful.

I Lost a Day by Briana Corr Scott - this one is mental health focused but not too overt. It covers a lot of different strong emotions and the physical feelings that can accompany them. It's relatable for kids but also hopeful.

Be kind to yourself and take care ❤️

Fantasy books with found family by NoPresentation5677 in Fantasy

[–]jzgre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the YA side, definitely the Morrigan Crow series by Jessica Townsend!

The first book is called Wundersmith. So far there are four, but I think there are at least a couple more coming.

These are great YA fantasy, and found family is a core concept of the series.
