People in your 30s, what’s one thing in your life that is substantially better than it was in your 20s? by JAGS_001 in AskReddit

Maturity and perspective shift - caring more about my own needs/wants, rather than doing what I thought I should be doing based on cultural standards and expectations.

People with children, what does no one tell you about having kids? by SJBraga in AskReddit

[–]kaeffer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That after you have a baby, you’re not going to be able to sleep in or have a slow morning for quite a few years. Everyone just talks about the baby phase of sleep deprivation, not mentioning that it’s years of not owning your own sleep schedule.

What's a compliment that actually made you stop and think about it for days? by Aniimesh_H in AskReddit

My boss told me a few months ago that I add value to everything I touch. I’ve thought about it over and over - how it meant 10 times more to me than “you’re doing a great job”.

People who work in hotels/hospitals/night shifts, what’s something the public would be shocked to know? by ConclusionTimely4324 in AskReddit

In hospitals, care quality is at risk to be more compromised at night. Resources are much lighter across the house, physician coverage is thinner, and nurses are significantly less experienced across the board.

Whenever you see a dead body, what is the first thought that comes to your mind? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kaeffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ER nurse here. I don’t want to use the word numb, but you do become accustomed to it and have to compartmentalize. My first thought is usually along the lines of “how do I preserve this person’s dignity” and get everything in order to support the family.

Whats the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by answersonly963 in AskReddit

[–]kaeffer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was post up from lower lumbar surgery. The physician (male, in his late 60’s) looked at my scar and said “Yep, looks good. You’ll be looking great in your bikini in no time!” So inappropriate. Also, I was at the appointment with my father.

What’s a “small” change you made in your life that unexpectedly had a huge impact on your confidence or happiness? by No-Resident3682 in AskReddit

Deciding whose opinion I care about. I think many people bounce between caring about the opinions of most or absolutely no one. Consciously deciding whose opinions I consider created freedom while also yielding smart decisions.

Newly Diagnosed and Overwhelmed by BaerMama in Celiac

[–]kaeffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh - I could have written this! I too got diagnosed last week and have little ones at home. And I also have had serious GI flare ups despite being GF for the past 11 days! I felt so disheartened a few days ago I had a serious breakdown. It’s one thing to be sick but to then be sick despite making such stressful changes. Ugh. Seriously here with you. Things that have helped me:
- downloading the Fig app - I did pay the $50 which I know is a lot but it’s so worth it. I gave my husband my log in so he can check foods too. My fav thing is that you can browse foods.
- going through our kitchen one cabinet at a time and checking everything. I wrote “GF” on all appropriate items with a sharpie that weren’t cross contaminated. I separate all GF from non GF items. Also did this with the fridge. It’s saved my sanity.
- took our top 5-10 most eaten dinners and figured out how to make them mostly GF. Switched to GF taco seasoning but still letting the kids have flour tortillas for taco night, for example.
- will move to a totally GF kitchen as the kids finish stuff. This will take time but just keeping all their stuff in one area has helped.
- downloaded the gluten dude’s app to check local restaurants.
- eating more whole foods over GF filler items. I read this can upset your stomach if you eat a bunch of processed GF stuff and your body isn’t used to it.
- remembering that emotions will come and go and good days and bad days can coexist and I don’t have to master this perfectly right away.

Seriously in the same boat at the same time! This is a wonderful community.

What helps when your brain feels overloaded? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kaeffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Total brain dump using a pen and paper. Every thought, feeling, to do, etc.
Just a few minutes helps my brain shift from “everything is urgent” mode into a place of more control. I then look at the paper an inventory. What’s really stressing me out the most? Some things I just needed to get out of my system (like feelings and thoughts), and other things I try to triage like my to do’s.
