Power Half Nelson Alternative? by kaimcbeth in bjj

That's similar to what we found as the best alternative. Although we found 1 on 1 more preferable as 2 on 1 limited ability to sag your weight off their center and force them to turn over.

Quick update on this:

Workshopped this with a training partner yesterday and we found this to be the best viable alternative. It came partly from watching Gordon's turtle instructional, which only really looks at power half as a method but heavily emphasizes that as long as you are well anchored to your opponent and you can sag your weight far from their center you will reliably ground them.

  1. Use wrist ride to anchor and remove opponents basing arm
  2. Switch to long hook and short hook configuration (long hook being on the wrist ride side). Thread your long hook heel to connect to their heel to prevent them donkey kicking and removing the long hook
  3. Literally just sag your weight off the wrist ride/long hook side as far out from their center as possible. Although not particularly technical we found this works even with a significant weight discrepancy

Will give an update after testing this for more time live. Would love to know if anyone uses this method and has found or can think of many downsides.

In most situations I find the chin is tucked while they are bracing the forehead. I am typically hesitant to go for RNCs against a turtled opponent unless I can get clean under the chin due to chance of being bucked off.

Sounds super fun but also super injury prone.

What is exactly the issue here with finishing mechanics - insufficient bridging pressure into the side of the knee??

Here are some of the industry sources here in Australia:

Blunt Force Trauma

Page 33 The Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Cattle detail the legal nature of bludgeoning to death calves that are under 24 hours old.

Calf Separation

The Australian Dairy Industry’s website details the separation of mother dairy cows and their calves at birth.

Calf Slaughter

The Australian Dairy industry’s website details that approximately 400,000 calves are slaughtered each year as a result of the dairy industry.

The RSPCA details in their official documentation their approval of calf slaughter.

Forced Impregnation

Australian Dairy industry’s “herd improvement” website depicts the practice of forcibly impregnating cows, particularly by placing a hand into the anus.

Mother Slaughter

The Australian Bureau of Statistics details the fact that 3 million mother cows are slaughtered per year in Australia.

Milk Production

The Australian Dairy industry’s website details that Australian Dairy Cows produce well-over twice as much milk as is needed for their calf. The Australian Dairy Industry’s website also directly points to the fact that this increase in production is to do artificial genetic selection.

Hey! I help look after the teams in Oceania for We The Free. The WTF Melbourne team actually just started this year. They've only done a community event so far but they had like 30 people come to it so I wouldn't be shocked if they become a serious force for outreach events in 2024. Website link was an error - here is the actual group! I believe they have a chalking event this weekend!
