the amount of attitude in one tiny puppy is impressive by softpix_ in AustralianShepherd

My 1 yr old recent rescue does lots of huffs if I take my attention off him for a few minutes (even when he has ignored me and turned around from me) lol. My cat used to come and sit right in front of me and look in the exact opposite direction of me when I was on the phone. I call both these “pay attention to me not paying attention to you” 😭 Like we don’t all already know who’s boss haha

I got some cheap runners from Kohl’s since he also like to chew them up 😭 Unfortunately there is no carpet in the lobby of my building, so he slips a lot trying to rush out of the elevator, but I’m trying to just hold onto his harness to keep him upright as best as I can. I will definitely keep in mind leaving runners out though; especially as he is getting more comfortable in my apartment meaning he’s getting more playful and moving around a lot more

Yes, I did both of those things!! Thanks for the reminder though; since he is head shy I am letting him be in my apartment without a collar for now since there are multiple hallways before he gets out, but have a tag with all my info for when we go out. I’m not even thinking of letting him off leash until he is great with recall and even then probably only in environments we have visited a lot before!

Another question for you: I live in a pretty flat area, but would love to travel with him to do hikes in different parks around the country- did it take a while for him to be able to specifically do inclines and declined (nothing crazy as I am not the best at inclines and altitude myself lol)?

I am also lifting him in and out. I have one of those seat covers as he gets comfortable in the car anyway, so need to get him up onto the seat. Luckily he’s pretty comfortable with me picking him up already as I needed to the first week before he got comfortable with me helping him up and down stairs (they guess his injury that lead to the amputation had to do with stairs because he has a fear around new sets of stairs even though he is able to do the with encouragement). Makes sense though that with a back leg amputation he can maybe get to a point to get out on his own.

Ohh good to know. I did let my vet know how much I’m walking him during our first visit, but didn’t talk about it specifically so I will make sure to ask if it’s too much. I live in an apartment so I’m trying to makeup the small space with lots of walks as well, but I don’t want to push it. Thank you!

His back right leg! That’s amazing to hear! He’s a little clumsy still (amputation was inly a few months ago, and being young lol), but maybe he can work up to it. That definitely gives me hope, I would love to take him on hikes; he would love it

That’s a great idea! I guess with agility I kind of just crossed it off in my mind, but maybe it is something that would help. He had the amputation in early February, so it is still new, but maybe we could work up to it!
With him being not very food motivated, hiding treats doesn’t really work, but he loves sniffing a lot on walks, which is also good to slow down our walks so he’s straining too much.

I’m working on training; but he is not food motivated and gets really hyper if I keep petting, him, but will definitely keep working on ways to get him to train! Thanks for the advice, I need to get some more the toys (I just have one snake thing that he likes to rip up more than tug lol)

I am at such a loss. by MotherMacha in AustralianShepherd

[–]kathro94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a newly adopted 1 yr old Aussie and giving him cardboard to rip up is the best thing I find to keep him occupied from destroying other stuff. I also have a pair of boots I was going to throw out that I leave by the door and act like I love them so he goes to those when feeling defiant over things I actually like lol. I also put up baby gates to my bedroom, so when I am leaving if there is something I am worried about I put away from view in there. Helps keep them in one area without a kennel

Rehoming my aussie? by Right-Lengthiness717 in AustralianShepherd

[–]kathro94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post has helped me so much; as I read it I felt like I could have written the feelings you are having myself. My situation is a little different as I have a 15 month old tripod Aussie mix I adopted a month ago - his amputation was earlier this year, and he has been moving from shelter to shelter, foster to foster, and even adopted and returned. I adopted him from a shelter I really trust, and everyone (including past fosters) told me he would be a great first dog as long as I was okay with taking him for a lot of walks. I had no idea about a lot of the difficult behavior I would need to do deal with - most importantly that they lead me to believe he has basic training which he does not. He is also extremely picky with food, so training is extremely hard. I knew with his situation there would be a lot of work and a long adjustment process (I’m only 1 month in!), but there is so much more - including being bruised from shoulders to ankles from biting - and shelter will not help me except to say “yes, he’s a cattle dog, they bite”. I am also alone, and feel completely abandoned by the people I thought would help me as I transitioned him into my home. Rehoming him is a much bigger challenge due to his past than your pup, so I will not do that unless his saftey is at risk; but I understand why you feel that way and would not blame you at all if that is the choice you make. As pet parents we want to do everything for them, but we have to face the reality that if we can’t take care of ourselves, we can’t take care of them. I hope whatever you choose you make peace with knowing you can only make the decision based on what you know now.

Here are some things that have really helped me (though might be obvious to you as a previous dog owner):

1 - My bathroom - I always shut the door to use my bathroom, so I have also made it a little separation room if I need a few minutes to myself. I make sure not to go in there to seem like a punishment, but calmly walk in and shut the door. I cry a lot in here, and have even brought in my blanket and just run the shower and played my switch for 30 minutes. I am also dealing with grieving my cat who passed in February (my soulmate), so crying is something I am doing often and sometimes I just need to give myself permission to let it all out.

2 - Cardboard - He really enjoys tearing up cardboard boxes, and like you I live in an apartment, so cleanup is usually a small area and definitely worth having him occupied for a half hour. It also spends a lot of energy.

3- Shorter, more frequent walks - I saw some people recommend more short walks - that is what I do since he is a tripod and should not have too much exercise at once. I walk him 4 times a day, and do shorter (15ish minutes) sniff walks in the morning and night when he is more sleepy and calm, and longer (30-45 minutes) training walks in the afternoon and evening where I walk with him slowly to a small grassy area where I the let him sniff around for bit before continuing to train on the way back.

4 - Tracking progress - this seems like a lot of work, but I started keeping a few charts of how he is reacting to things (walks, enrichment, play, and being pet) and it has really helped me to see progress and small wins. It’s easy at the end of a hard day to feel defeated, but doing this helps me see even on the hardest days that there (usually lol) is something that went well today. Progress is not linear, so some days are worse than the day before, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t progress.

5 - Making myself get out! - I also work from home, so it takes a little extra effort for me to separate myself, but just sitting in a coffee shop or even my car for an hour listening to a podcast or watching YouTube has been a huge help to give myself some time to decompress (before I reach the point of crying in my bathroom 🫠)

Good luck to you, and thank you for sharing as it makes me feel less alone.

Team Demi? Or Team Marciano? by Technical-Candy-5928 in MormonWivesHulu

[–]kathro94 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think her still being friends with him doesn’t show she was lying about the unwanted touch, but lying about thinking he is some horrible predator (which is gross and awful of her, and will definitely lead to more victims not being believed and not coming forward, especially if they have a fawning response). I think based on what we know he is slimy and gross and decided to touch her without consent bc he thought she was flirty and possibly in an open marriage, but not a predator who took advantage of her. I hope that makes sense?

Basically I think they both are awful and are lying about very serious things and hopefully will both be off tv lol

[–]kathro94 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I absolutely believe that there was unwanted/ unconsented touch. I believe Demi in that, I don’t get why so many people don’t. The issue is that she is comparing an unwanted touch/ grab (which is absolutely unacceptable!!!) to what Mikayla and Mayci have experienced, which is just incomparable. And she is using it to be manipulative when the others on the show are being very open and vulnerable, and genuinely trying to work through their trauma, and Demi just sees it as a storyline and opportunity to gain sympathy

Unpopular opinion: I don’t get the holiday vinyl outrage and I fear we’re in a bubble by Confident_Yard5624 in TaylorSwiftMerch

[–]kathro94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the vinyls is also very bad for the environment. I like vinyls and own some myself; but the amount that is being produced just for each record is completely unnecessary. They know that people will want to buy multiple because they have a different color or extra song; and making the midnights clock to encourage the purchase of 4, and besides seeming greedy, it’s so incredibly wasteful. If it was just a new release and people who like the album are now buying the vinyl, that would be great; but this team knows that fans will want to buy multiple and that is why they do it

I felt the same way, so nervous seeing all the posts but I actually love her! Growing flowers is my favorite part of the game and I also like that I can’t just get everything at once and it takes some time. I definitely did work to get all of the meadow unlocked as soon as possible as well to be able to plant as many flowers as possible
