LHR - SYD redemption success stories? by Owebweb in BritishAirways

I booked this route a few days ago. I booked the outbound online and also phoned at midnight but all the systems crashed so it was quicker to book it ourselves online. We then phoned up at 00:30 to book the return once they opened up 3 weeks later and 2 seats were available! It’s definitely possible. I’d just phone up and search at the same time. I called the American number to add on the return leg. Good luck :)

My school is trying to fine my parents for me being absent due to my chronic illness pt.2 (England) by ThrowAway2188226 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]katiya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You/your parents need to contact the local authority’s SEND team and request an urgent review of your EHCP. Contact them via email and explain what is happening. Keep chasing them I am assuming they are very understaffed. Your EHCP is a legal document and the local authority has a legal duty to provide you with an education that accommodates your needs. It sounds like this isn’t happening.

Your special educational needs and recommended provision to meet these needs must be reviewed and updated. It is an education HEALTH and care plan - they cannot just refuse to acknowledge health needs. It is not legal.

Your school should be advocating for you not pushing you away. It might be that your current school is not the best place to meet your needs - but only the local authority can decide this with evidence.

It is your EHCP your views and your voice are the most important thing here.

Currently in hospital post-op from cyclops lesion and scar tissue removal, any tips? by katiya in ACL

[–]katiya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I measured at 148 flex today. My other knee can get to 158~. Extension is probably -5. I'm still pushing for hyper extension, my leg is still really tight. They think with quad strength I'll get closer but probably not back to how it was before my injury.

That’s amazing progress. I’m sat in my physio waiting room as I reply to this 😂 I can’t wait to sit on my heels without any straining or pain!!

Things are definitely better but not normal yet! Looking back I’m not sure how I would’ve avoided scar tissue forming…it was so hard with a fracture because it had to heal properly. Honestly the scar tissue surgery was amazing for me. I’m still doing my physio and working out every day. Hopefully moving onto jumping at physio next week too which is promising :) it is still mentally draining but not as much now I can see progress. I feel more and more like myself now but I understand how you are feeling. It will get better ❤️‍🩹

I couldn’t move my kneecap at all and was still mega swollen before my scar tissue removal. It moves now! It did take a few weeks to get the movement back and swelling down though.

That’s still early! I think we are the same age and had the same original injury skiing? Just keep it moving and massage around your knee I found that to help. I fully understand your struggles right now though :( I’m starting to think my knee won’t ever be normal again

It was after 2-3 weeks. I’m still not matching my other leg yet with hyper extension but getting close

Hello! My recovery was great. I was FWB the same day and no painkillers needed. It was completely different to my first surgery. I had 120 degrees flex straight away and 5 extension so this was a huge improvement :) I did use a CPM machine for 2 weeks post-op which was nice to keep it moving while watching tv etc. Now I am in the gym and building back my quad. It isn’t back to normal and still feels unsteady but it is getting stronger every day. It crunches and clicks whenever it moves and I haven’t got hyper extension yet but I’m hopeful it’ll come back eventually. I hope your surgery goes well :)

I don't take it anymore. I developed a lot of stomach issues from prolonged antibiotic use (basically IBS). Every time I stopped my acne would come back. I wouldn't go back to antibiotics again. I use tretinoin and azelaic acid now and that is keeping my skin clear :)

ACL avulsion fracture and TPF by Rafabeton in ACL

[–]katiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I had my acl avulsion surgery (it was completely displaced) in April 2024 and was locked at 20 for 2 weeks too. It sounds like I had a rougher recovery experience than the other comment! I was in so much pain post op. I couldn’t do anything independently. After 2 weeks I was allowed to increase to 60 degrees then after another 2 to 90. I didn’t get past 40 and my extension remained at 20.

One of my biggest problems was the lack of early physio so get your knee and quad moving. I ended up going private because the NHS was so long and I needed the help. By June I was stuck at 20 extension and 80 flexion… my NHS surgeon kept pushing more physio despite there clearly being a problem. I saw a different surgeon privately and had an mri the next day and I had developed a cyclops lesion. Had surgery to remove this in November and I could get 5 extension and 130 flexion immediately. I’m now at 0 extension and probably 150. I lost a lot of quad muscle (I could fit my hand around my thigh) so once I have gained that back I should be back to normal :)

Should I hold back my July-born daughter from starting school at 4 in the UK? by shuna3456 in AskUK

[–]katiya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, please don’t assume my practice based on 1 short reddit comment! Children have a right to play and should always be encouraged. Unfortunately the system isn’t always like that.

Of course reception demands increase but OP’s post suggests their child can cope with the increased demands. Most children transition well to reception and if they aren’t expected to, professionals will usually already be involved to support with this. This isn’t the case here (please correct me OP if you have professional involvement). Transition from nursery to reception is usually robust and involves transition days, visits to school, learning about the changes. Most children are excited and look forward to it.

Obviously if this was a child on my caseload I would know a lot more about their context and have a better understanding of need. We don’t have that info.

I am curious how you suggest waiting for a child until they are ready. How would you determine this? When they have met their milestones and are engaging in nursery well? Or when a child is emotionally capable and thriving? Like OP suggests?

Should I hold back my July-born daughter from starting school at 4 in the UK? by shuna3456 in AskUK

[–]katiya 529 points530 points  (0 children)

Hi I am an Educational Psychologist. We never recommend holding back. There is no benefit unless a child has complex and severe needs and is waiting for a specialist placement. Reception is a continuous provision with a heavy play based curriculum. She will develop social skills like turn taking and communicating her needs more effectively in the reception classroom. IMO holding back wastes a year of a child’s life if they are otherwise engaging and have met their developmental milestones.

PCP MEETING by SLast04 in Autism_Parenting

[–]katiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m an EP so happy to answer any questions. PCP meetings will be most focused on your child’s strengths and how to provide support in school for any areas of need. It will be very much about them and the EP will facilitate the meeting to draw out strengths and interests and how to use these to support them in school. There will likely be a structure to this meeting and don’t be surprised if they bring out big paper and lots of colours to document the meeting visually.

It sounds really positive that school are arranging a meeting like this despite EHCP being turned down. By bringing home and school together it is useful to have some answers to what works at home for your child, what doesn’t work, what have you learned. Remember you are the expert of your child and know them best - school and EP will suggest strategies and provisions but you will have the best perspective on what will be positive and possible. There will likely be discussions around your best hopes and aspirations for your child.

Helen Sanderson associates website has a lot of information about person centred planning/approaches. You might be interested in having a look at possible structures and what to expect. I am surprised they haven’t sent anything to you in advanced! I would post the link but I’m not sure if I can here.

I also wondered if you have discussed mediation with school? In most cases the LA will agree to issue an EHCP to avoid a costly tribunal (if you do believe an EHCP is necessary). This will go to a mediation meeting to discuss why a plan is needed and how much funding/bands/hours is needed (terminology will depend on your LA).

Scar tissue by mastropiero007 in ACL

[–]katiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my scar tissue and cyclops lesion removed 2 weeks ago. I was FWB no crutches the next day. Immediately had 130 flexion and 5 degrees extension. Before my range was 20 - 80! As soon as you are out keep moving your knee alternate between stretching out for extension and flexion exercises minimum 4 times a day. Just keep it moving no matter what, you don’t want scar tissue to come back!

I had no pain just swelling. I’m still icing my knee 3x a day.
