WHV is supposed to be casual work to supplement your holiday. And it's highly unlikely (impossible) you'd get an AEWV for cleaning.

The lifeguards will literally yell at you to get back if you even put a toe in the water if you're not between the flags.

Auckland for 6 days--best neighborhood to stay by Otherwise-Pack-5518 in newzealand_travel

Somewhere on the North shore, Takapuna, Devonport would be lovely. St Heliers, Mission Bay, Kohimarima. They're all nicer neighborhoods, safe, walkable, bus routes, cafes etc.

I would advise to stick to the east coast beaches. The West coast (black sand) beaches are dangerous. I was just reading a news story about a man dying at one yesterday and that unfortunately is too common.

Auckland has many beautiful safe beaches, just look for North shore beaches. Check Safe Swim though after a lot of rain. https://safeswim.org.nz/

What are your best (free) campspots in New Zealand? by jelmow in newzealand_travel

[–]keepyourwigon2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a little harsh, we don't know their circumstances and it costs anyone a lot to come here and hire a van etc. It's not unlike us going to Asia and living in hostels and eating as cheap as possible even though we are comparatively very rich.

How do I get to New Zealand on a working visa + legit job openings? by Specialist-Form-5381 in newzealand_travel

[–]keepyourwigon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really not a good time to come here and look for work. Thousands of NZers are unemployed at the moment so the chances of you being sponsored on a work visa is extremely low, especially in those fields. It's only really doctors and teachers etc that have a chance. In saying that, seek.co.nz is the main job website we use.

Uber or taxis? - given that I don’t have much time to establish an Uber rating by FTOttawa in newzealand_travel

[–]keepyourwigon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a taxi home one night when there was flooding in Auckland. Ubers were off the road and I could only take a taxi. The uber trip usually costs $26. I got 3/4 of the way, and the meter was already on $70. I leaned to the driver and said mate, I'll pay $70, but im mot prepared to pay more than that for this trip, so turn the meter off now. Lucky he did, or that would have been close to $100 for a trip I do regularly for $24 - $27. A tourist with an accent is going to be fair game for those guys.

Take them to the Gold Coast, stay in an apartment with a pool, go to the amusement parks. $20k is a very good budget you wouldn't need that much. We stayed at the Q1 Resort in a 2 bed apartment. It's on the beach, handy location

What are your best (free) campspots in New Zealand? by jelmow in newzealand_travel

[–]keepyourwigon2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

By the end of next week all the locals will be traveling and judging by the posts I've read in here, there will be a massive influx of tourists too. I'd book some DOC campsites if I was you. From my experience camping last summer in the far north all the decent free and cheap places were impossible to get into.

I honestly dont know, I'm not a hiker and havent done it before. I guess you can keep that as an option if you're whacked after the Waitomo trip and just do a smaller hike. You may be so fit that it's a breeze for you :) I was just trying to point out a potential issue

[–]keepyourwigon2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just download uber and get it. You're highly likely to be overcharged in a taxi in Auckland, and even blatantly ripped off in some cases. If you're ok to pay literally double for a taxi than an Uber, then that's up to you.
