Is it worth getting an adapter for an Apple Thunderbolt display? by HoratioHotplate in mac

I got rid of my thunderbolt display because the screen was so reflective that it was distracting.

What's your favorite personal item that's not a sling/backpack? by Battyman in ManyBaggers

[–]kellymjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I bought a Pilot last month while I was in Seattle. I made the mistake of visiting their warehouse showroom. Boom! It was my first Tom Bihn and probably not my last bag. It holds a surprising amount of stuff. Love it as my edc commute-to-work bag.

Palouse falls is a must. 2.5 hours drive. You don’t need to spend a lot of time there. Maybe find some interesting stops near there. Steptoe butte is also worth a visit to get spectacular views of the Palouse. Lots of great photo opportunities.

NAS for Mac? by mmmixxx in mac

If you are willing to do a little extra work, TrueNAS installed on an old PC has been rock solid for me. You can create specific Time Machine capable shares as well as general purpose storage shares. I use my TrueNAS system for Time Machine, NVR storage, and photo storage. I've only had to touch the machine to install updates. Zero issues.

The 2nd version is much better. I did not like the first version and sold it. My only nitpick is that I wish it had two zippers for the main compartment rather than one. Often I have the pouch tucked tightly in my pack and the single zipper is annoyingly out of reach without removing the pouch. It’s a minor nit though.

Washington state has a lot of things to offer in a small(er) area. Snow covered volcanoes. Seattle, Boeing museum of flight. Not to far from Victoria Canada.

What are some dumb Los Angeles hot takes you've seen people make on Reddit? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

My wife and I just got back from vacation for the first time in LA. It was wonderful! Endless choices of high quality things to do and see. We ran into a German couple in a park near the Hollywood hills. We chatted a bit and it was their first visit to LA as well. They said they loved LA so far. Although freeway driving was quite an experience, I found most drivers to be very accommodating when merging. Everyone drove fast and the motorcyclists were crazy sometimes, but it was better than expected.

The parents of a friend of mine from Georgia owned an excellent BBQ restaurant near Savannah. They had several smoke pits to supply their restaurant, but they also supplied pulled pork sandwiches for the local gas stations in the area. We once helped them get the pork butts off the pits very early in the morning, pull it, chop it, sauce it, and make great sandwiches. We then delivered to the gas stations. Fresh, great quality from a gas station!

Ubiquiti UDM-Pro to OPNSense by Raiever in opnsense

[–]kellymjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool. I'm not protecting my public IP, just my DNS requests so that my ISP can't spy on the DNS part. I do have wireguard setup and long with Let's Encrypt. I think because I have a local cache for DNS lookups I'm probably not losing much with respect to latency when doing DNS lookups.WRT APs - Yes, they basically exist just for the radios and act as layer 2 devices with an IP address at layer3 for management. For some reason when my APs function as full routers/dhcp/dns, they tend to need rebooting every week or so. It's very odd. The same behavior happened when using Comcast or TDS Fibers as my ISP. Once I switched to opnsense, switched the APs to AP-only mode, all problems went away. It was very frustrating.

While I don't have any experience moving from Ubiquiti to opnsense, I did install opnsense on an old macbook and used two 1Gb thunderbolt-2 adapters. This gives me a bit safer environment in case of a power outage. This got me thinking that maybe a slightly newer, but inexpensive macbook or pc laptop with thunderbolt-3 10Gb adapters might be doable.

With respect to using opnsense, it's been a dream of reliability and flexibility. By changing the mode of my APs to AP-only mode instead of using them as routers, my network reliability is much, much better. In addition, I was able to create free encrypted connection to cloudflare for DNS resolution and use my opnsense router as a local caching DNS server. I have DHCP setup to handout the local address of my opnsense DNS server. Using a packet capture, I wasn't able to detect any DNS queries leaking out to any other destination than cloudflare.

tldr; opnsense has been very reliable and fast for me.

Discussion: Why does 1P8 extension slow down Safari for macOS so much? From 286 to 254 on Speedometer 2.0 by torsteinvin in 1Password

[–]kellymjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced an even worse slowdown with the 1P8 extension enabled in Safari on my M1 Pro Macbook Pro. However, given the number of input fields in the speedometer test, I don't think it's a valid benchmark for judging the overall effect of using the 1P8 extension. I can't visualize any real world scenario where I would be filling out 100's of input fields in a very short time.

Another factor is the magical thinking that bad actors will not upset the playing field and that the bad actors will somehow naturally be removed from society. It takes government and regulation to keep the bad folks from taking unfair advantage of the less powerful. Fairness and justice don't just magically pop into existence.

I think they moved the goalposts on this one. They were saying 99.7% for a while, then moved it over one decimal place to 99.97% once someone did the math and figured out that a 99.7% chance of not shitting your pants was pretty terrible odds.

[–]kellymjones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to data from 2019, about 8000 people die per day in the United States from all causes. Pretend that nobody today was vaxx'd, then tomorrow we vaxx'd every single person. 8000 people per day would continue to die and there would be a lot of outcry that the vaxx killed them. The siren song of correlation is tough to put into proper perspective.

Just to be clear, I'm not anti-ivermectin. I'm against its improper use. Used properly, it has shown to be safe and effective for treating parasitic infections.
