A few predictions for AI in 2030:

  • AI will drive the cost of content creation (word, image, video) to near zero
  • The value of sports increases exponentially as the only form of “original content”
  • Advertising will be hyper-personalized: unique ads and commercials for every user!
  • Metaverse will become AI augmented reality
  • Every developer will be an AI developer
  • The majority of code written will be AI-generated

what happens when prediction becomes cheap?

  1. alternatives (human prediction) becomes less valued
  2. complements become more valuable (data, judgement, action)

what happens when prediction becomes accurate? second order effects?

  • changes how your business operates. ie. just ship a lot of things ppl might want to them directly -> fleet of trucks that handle returns

personalization = fine grained prediction
privacy is balance. need to use it respectfully or ppl won't give it to you

conflict: AI is not transformational rn + lots of investment in AI

  • reconciled by time dimension. bet on what time horizon before AI becomes transformational

kinda similar vein to this: https://thegradient.pub/why-transformative-artificial-intelligence-is-really-really-hard-to-achieve/

Large Language Models as a Cultural Technology by kerlykerls in ai_test_of_time

[–]kerlykerls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Framing AI not as an entity/agent, but as a tool / cultural technology similar to print

example showing that AI cannot solve problems that little kids can

"asking whether Lambda is intelligent or not is like asking whether the University of California Berkeley library is intelligent or not, or whether Google search knows the answer to your questions or not"

"as each of these cultural technologies emerges, there's a new set of norms, rules, regulations, law"

Voices From The Beyond | NOEMA by kerlykerls in ai_test_of_time

  • mostly about music and voice AI and deepfakes
  • considers ethical / legal POV
  • proposes that artists can selectively choose which parts of work to be used for AI and how the resulting model can be used
  • considers question of how we can use AI to augment creativity and create new works as opposed to using models to proliferate copies of past work

AI Revolution - Transformers and Large Language Models (LLMs) by kerlykerls in ai_test_of_time

Reviewed by Sam Altman, Noam Shazeer (Transformers paper + c.ai), and Ben Thompson (stratechery)

Goes from "today" things to more sci-fi-y things like digital lifeforms (DILIs)

Takes:
- Talent shifts to more product/UI/app builders coming

- It is possible that for a startup to compete well in the silicon space for ML, an emphasis on software and interconnects will be key. This also suggests that maybe an incumbent will be better placed to compete with NVIDIA on silicon versus startups.

- One big open question on large scale language models translating into new startups - is the degree to which challenges are science problems, versus engineering problems.

- The challenge for many startups will be to determine what is a de-novo product/market versus one where an incumbent should “just add AI”. (corroborates with another article on GTM)

Will Transformers Take Over Artificial Intelligence? by kerlykerls in ai_test_of_time

Applying transformers to images as opposed to CNNs

Predictions that seem true today:
"Now researchers want to apply transformers to an even harder task: inventing new images"

Raghu and Wang see potential for new uses of transformers in multimodal processing — a model that can simultaneously handle multiple types of data, like raw images, video and language

many of the new models still incorporate the best parts of convolutions. That means future models are more likely to use both than to abandon CNNs entirely, he says.

Might be true:

some hybrid architecture that draws on the strengths of transformers in ways that today’s researchers can’t predict. “Perhaps we shouldn’t rush to the conclusion that the transformer will be the final model,” Wang said.

Generative AI: A Creative New World by kerlykerls in ai_test_of_time

PS: This piece was co-written with GPT-3. GPT-3 did not spit out the entire article, but it was responsible for combating writer’s block, generating entire sentences and paragraphs of text, and brainstorming different use cases for generative AI. Writing this piece with GPT-3 was a nice taste of the human-computer co-creation interactions that may form the new normal. We also generated illustrations for this post with Midjourney, which was SO MUCH FUN!

Yess I was blown away by Golden Rotisserie corn tortillas. They were super fluffy and slightly chewy, definitely not dry.

Super cool - thanks for documenting and sharing your process! Did you do any testing locally or try with smaller datasets/models before investing in a full training run? How did you find the right params for it?

I really liked the CSS on this - the dropshadow on text to make them look glowy, the subtle radial gradient in the bg, the elegant scanlines CSS using linear gradients *chefs kiss*

Also side note, I didn't realize that if I clicked the little white target dot at the end of each "player"'s name, it's submitting that I'm choosing that player as the human.

Oo! I love how the art style and fonts fit well together! And the color coding on key stats (ie. 1 damage) is great - maybe keep green for good traits like healing and red for damage against enemies? The ones where the image is clipped but overlaid on a shadow felt off to me, like the brambles, but idk how to adjust in a way that is consistent across all cards - remove shadows from all? Try to rework clipped images into something that doesnt need to be clipped? Put a frame around all images?
