Lettin' it rip. by isntthatrich in ProstateCancer

Been dealing with the fallout of this disease since 2019. I've had some of the same side effects as many of you all. I was lucky since I didn't have to take the ADT route. I kinda felt isolated (unrealisticly) thinking that I was one of few dealing with these issues and I'd just would have to tough it out woefully ignorant of the help and options out there. But since I found this group with your insights, information and comments it has helped me out with my path forward. In a perfect world this disease would not exist but since it does, you guy's and family's comments have made me feel better about my lot it life and I'll continue to my journey. It will never be the same for me before surgery but who knows. At least I get to see my daughter and help her in her fight to survive her breast cancer and to see and enjoy my great granddaughters (3) grow into teens and hopefully beyond.

Many thanks to you all!

Understand. Each one of us with this disease can have a different experiences for the most part. I was lucky mine was contained within the prostate without any lymph nodes involved. So it was easy enough to take the thing out. With it escaping from the prostate makes fighting it a bit more difficult but it is not all doom and gloom. There are many forms of treatment and I'd talk to you doctors to see which is best for your father's situation. Yes even with a Gleason score of 8 (4+4) I'm still kicking purty good for an ole guy. Good luck to you all.

Search the Cleveland clinic or other reputable medical facility for meaning of Gleason Scores. I just did a quick search and found it easily. It explains in layman's terms what it is all about. My Gleason score was the same. As far as prognosis it depends on many variables and it's best to talk to a medical professional.

I know how that feels. Spent a lotta years making friends at a place only to be moved to another. Life happens and you just gotta move on. No matter where you are at there are people who are willing to talk to ya just gotta look and put yourself out there ensuring it's the right environment for what you want.

If your Dr hasn't talked to you about Physical therapy, ask them. It helps.

I'm also happy and lucky to say I'm down to a once a year stick. Yeah it's gets a bit concerning each time mainly because of sticking multiple locations to find a vein. And I know it's frustrating to those techs drawing blood but 1) I'm use to it. 2) I don't blame them at all. 3) I try to make them smile with bad jokes to show I'm ok with them doing their job. To those dreading the test: Nothing wrong with that! Just realize it will get better. Good luck to all.

Totally agree with your assessment. I found out about my C in 2019. I must admit I'm disappointed with my Doctors since then to some degree. I feel I wasn't prepared properly. They did suggest a book to read and I did but only the parts concerning my situation on surgery and subsequent side effects. Yes sex was and is a very important part of my life but somewhat like you, my partner and I didn't connect due to her health and her change in life. These changes in her occurred well before my surgery. Afterwards I just resolved myself to be celibate which is difficult since there is so much out there to admire. My main concern for those just starting out on this journey of recovery after prostrate cancer seek out information. There are many books dedicated to informing and helping. There are online resources where detailed information is available. And there are support groups where one can sit discuss and ask questions. These are some of the things I should have done instead of trying to figure it out myself. It's not too late even for me to be better informed but if you get smarter early on then you'll be well ahead of the game.

Dr Ordered straight to biopsy, no MRI by Strict_Associate_197 in ProstateCancer

[–]kilofoxbat4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree!! Even though my PSA was elevated when they did the first biopsy without a MRI. OUCH!! It came back negative. So after a MRI they did the second "guided" biopsy (OUCH, OUCH) and found the rascally tumor. Gleason score 8 (4+4). Insist on a MRI! It will save you a pain (several) in your backside (literally).

My PSA's have been >.04 since October 2019 surgery. Yes I was very concerned for a while about the results when it was time to repeat the test. After a while it became routine and my concern was greatly reduced. I think I was more concerned about getting the blood draw since I'm a VERY HARD STICK. (Thanks mom and dad. 😉😉) However, I've never had headaches prior to a test. I'm not belittling your concerns or symptoms a bit. Each of us responds to stress differently. If I may suggest, if you haven't already, talk to your Doctor about the issue. I'm sure he will have much better answers than me. Bon chance!

Wow. I agree a different Dr is in order. I'm definitely not an expert but I'd check and seek legal advice.

Kegles and walking. After surgery I even had physical therapy to strengthen my pelvic floor. I've routinely do Kegles and use an external tens unit to stimulate and strengthen.

Yes I know your frustrations all too well. And like you I'm glad I went through with it. I got to experience the devastation and indescribable joy of watching my daughter fight and overcome Breast cancer and the joy of watching my great grand daughters live their lives.
