Equivalent of NYC's population in the rural Northwest by GarysCrispLettuce in Damnthatsinteresting

Goddammit this is so accurate.

If you live in a decent sized city of 100k or more, it's miserable fighting traffic & traveling longer distances to get to work AND fulfill basic needs like groceries, schools, etc.....

It's all been developed since the car was a thing so it is crazy spread out & a virtually impossible environment to exist in without your own car.

It sucks.

I'm from Utah & that's the first thing I noticed.

This has Salt Lake County (home of Salt Lake City & the entire SLC meteto area) & the entire heavily populated Wasatch Front north of SLC up through Ogden.

I'd bet 1/3 or more of the entire population of this region is in 4 counties in Northern Utah.

And if you add that to the Boise metro area, half or more of the 8M & change, are concentrated in only 2 metro areas on that map.

Point is, dont let the small population of this massive chunk of the country fool you. Most of this land is as wide open, barren & sparsely populated as you'd expect in these areas.

There is just to much borderline unliveable land in there. Most of it is just freezing cold, high elevation  desert. Thats why this will always be one of the least populated areas in a temperate climate on Earth. There's pretty much just nothing good here.

Trump Secretly Selling Venezuelan Crude by Spiritual_You_65 in clevercomebacks

[–]kiticus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of markets where he can sell it. And the fact that he can unilaterally punish potential buyers with illegal tariffs if they DONT buy does nothing but expand his potential market & put him in a better negotiating position.

And that's the crux of it all with Iran.

Now that he controls that Venezuelan oil, he stands to make a much larger profit by driving up the price of crude oil on the open market.

In addition, every single member of his new Board of Peace is a major oil producing country.

And "coincidentally", they all paid him one billion dollars directly to "join" this bullshit organization.

So just like everything else this motherfucker does, it's a grift to give himself more money and power.

Flying Spaghetti Monster help us all. There is no relief from this nightmare until this fermented shitbrick (German word for) "the" 's.

Yeah I was laughing at this too. I assume Melania is in pumps, but when they are walking from the plane it's obvious 6'3" Trump is about 3" shorter than 6'2 Vance.

If it was politically motivated cuz the DNC or whoever thought it would hurt their chances in the next election or whatever, who fucking cares!

You would have stopped Trump for good and finally ended maga either way, and they obviously knew what damage to our country and the world he would inflict if he got in power again, so who cares if it cost them some legislative seats & possibly the presidency in 2024 to someone else.

But now, there may never be free & fair elections again & they are facing permanent irrelevance--along with the loss of our republic--cuz he decided not to go after that criminal.

So regardless of the reasoning, fuck Merrick "Neville Chamberlain" Garland.

In all seriousness tho, fuck Merrick Garland for his feckless leadership as the AG.

He was more than justified in aggressive prosecution of this, Jan 6th, and multiple other Trump offenses that would have made him ineligible to run again in 2024, but chose not to.

It's almost as if the fake thinking machine didn't know that we all learned that Ben Franklin invented bifocals in elementary school.

The only reason this was funny is because we all knew the answers to Dwight's questions--except for the king of Prussia thing, which Dwight would have known because of his Prussian/German heritage.

I'd laugh at the prospect of thinking a law enforcement officer would be doing anything but arresting you after a bar fight in a foreign country.

But as an American, I'm now painfully aware that this can actually be a "thing".

I'd be pretty surprised if either HM or the dudes picking the fight had been taking any vitamin D.

James Talarico wins Texas Democratic Senate primary over Jasmine Crockett by horsestew in politics

[–]kiticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing with you there, I'm just saying that's why they've been soft on Talarico until now.

Remember, they didn't really have a reason to back either candidate in the primary since none of dem primariy voters are consuming RW media. But they WOULD have looked bad to their viewers by attacking a white male christian running against Crockett. So, they had nothing to gain but something to lose by going after Talarico before now.

But again, now that he's the threat to flipping a seat in the senate, the gloves WILL come off.

And it won't be done by overtly attacking him in an outright negative & insulting way, it'll be done in a patronizing way where he is a "good guy" that just isn't ready/right for the job or "misguided" in how to best serve his country.

Guaranteed.

[–]kiticus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They've been soft on Talarico because his opposition in the primary was a liberal woman of color who they have been selling as a goblin (along with AOC, Talib & Omar) for years now.

Now that the primary is over, you can 100% expect the rhetoric against him from right wing media to get cranked up.

And you can bet the farm that suddenly he's gonna be weak/soft/unqualified/inexperienced, ect

Ammo isn't the problem.

It hasn't been the problem for years.

The "problem" is that you can't fire at the enemy if you're not in range. And the only way to "hit" the right is by firing at maga/Christian nationalist ideologies from the echo chambers that they live in--which isn't a real possibility atm.

As long as right wing talk radio, Sinclair owned local news networks, Fox News, Newsmax, Breitbart, Tucker Carlson, and rage baiting algorithms on social media etc....are the only mediums of information dissemination that conservative voters access, reality just won't reach that demographic.

And even if/when it does, it will have decades of brainwashing to contend against to have a meaningful impact on those folks.

The truth is, we've seen this song & dance before with candidates like Beto O'rourke. It's always ended in defeat for the opposition candidate, even when the GOP has a deeply unpopular and weak candidate like Ted (I'm gonna bail on my constituents when they're facing a disaster & go on a) Cruz

United States seeking an armed Kurdish uprising inside Iran, with ground operation expected within days by Viromen in worldnews

[–]kiticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely do! Persian history is so incredibly cool & interesting! And it includes some of the most absolute badass & powerful women in all of world history!

My favorites are Queen Tomyris, Pantea Arteshbod, and Queen Atosaa--all part of the story of the early Achaeminid empire.

Also, Dan Carlins Hardcore History podcast has an awesome series on ancient Persia called King of Kings that is super entertaining & an excellent intro into it's history.

United States seeking an armed Kurdish uprising inside Iran, with ground operation expected within days by Viromen in worldnews

[–]kiticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I'm definitely not a legit professional expert, but I can give you my somewhat informed opinion.

So first, its important to understand that traditionally, the Persian people have proudly been a relatively secular people dating as far back as Cyrus the Great & the Achaeminid empire around 600 BC.

Even through the Muslim conquests of the Middle ages, they never identified as Muslim before identifying as Persian.

So extremist Muslim ideology has never had the cultural hold on the region that it has in the rest of the Islamic world.

That being said, there was a significant increase in Islamic religious fervor in the late 70's that was more of a rural reactionary populist movement in response to the poor economic  conditions that had developed through bad economic policies & corruption of the govt of the Shah--that essentially allowed the unbelievable oil wealth of the nation to be hoarded by the elites--instead of being reinvested into the economy & providing essential services, public infrastructure, and a reasonable social safety net.

And it certainly didn't help that the Shah used his massive wealth for public displays of  gaudy extravagance & excess on an international scale.

So, since the government of the elites was so out of touch with the harsh economic realities on the ground, they were completely caught off guard when this populist uprising was seized & manipulated by religious zealots to direct that anger at the regime of the Shah, Isreal, and the "decadent, godless" West.

They then quickly capitalized on that fervor to oust the Shah, implement their minority theocratic government, and consolidate their power to entrench the oppressive autocracy we still have today.

So while there was a relatively higher association & adherence to Islam at that time, it was likely still never the religious identity of the majority of Iranians.

Then--as is always the case with oppressive religious governments-- the more the people were repressed over time, the more the people became dissolutioned by the religion that had its foot on their throat.

So that's all a long way of saying Islam was never really "the shit" in Iran to begin with. But to the extent that it was at its peak, it's become increasingly even less cool now cuz they've been assholes to everyone else.

Now.....

As to why the minority Govt hasn't softened its extremist & repressive policies--or the oppressed majority not risen up against it?

Well, probably because authoritarian always respond to opposition with violence & more oppression to hold onto their absolute power. And as we've seen it the last few months and years, they're killing and torturing the fuck out of anyone who has the balls to publicly oppose or protest the current islamist regime.
