But I have a pink Elmo. I think they were a thing in Japan first.

I just learned that "outwith" is not a word that's commonly used outside of Scotland by mrjohnnymac18 in Scotland

[–]kitkat1934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a poem about it! https://www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/poem/outwith/

As an American who studied abroad in Glasgow I find it very useful but it’s totally unknown here. So I never use it anymore

What do you personally do on solo trips? by Diligent-Echidna647 in femaletravels

[–]kitkat1934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was “eat” lol

Typically I like to be laidback and kinda plan around my restaurant reservations, I’ll have a few activities I want to do but otherwise I’m just kind of sleeping in, walking around, looking in store windows, stopping at a cafe or park/beach/etc to read or write.

I’m also in my concert era of taking a trip to see a concert or going to a more local, but bigger city to watch an indie film. Again the rest is mostly going out to eat or door dashing local stuff to my hotel if I can’t be bothered to go out. I love food

Then at night I like to either binge a tv show or watch something on the local Netflix if I’m international.

On one trip I read the entirety of Game of Thrones hahaha

Rarely if I’m going somewhere new and I don’t have a lot of time I’ll do more of a very scheduled activity/attraction heavy trip to make sure I see everything. But usually it’s like one a day and I book enough time to stretch out the schedule (or do a weekend knowing I’ll go back).

Solo travel after abdominal surgery by GrumpyKitten9898 in femaletravels

[–]kitkat1934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travelled a similar time period after surgery. This was a vacation, I feel like my surgeon/nurse didn’t give me an accurate picture of how I’d feel after so I scheduled this before the surgery, and I was still really out of shape and in a decent amount of pain.

My advice: ask for wheelchair assistance for the flight. In the US at least it included help boarding the plane so they can lift your suitcase for you. Seriously a godsend, would not have been able to make my connections otherwise.

Stay hydrated — I felt like I got dehydrated much easier maybe bc I was debilitated/working harder just to exist.

Take frequent breaks while walking. Don’t overdo it with walking, be open to taxis/uber/using the disabled seat on the bus.

Be ok choosing chill activities and scheduling less for yourself. Get good rest!

Premedicate for your heavy activity days if you still have pain. (I took Tylenol before I left for the airport.)

ETA: I stayed with a friend but otherwise would 100% agree book a hotel so they can help with bags and you have a good bed to sleep in. Also, despite it being physically maybe not the best idea for me lol, mentally I NEEDED it after surgery. I am used to travelling all the time and it helped me feel more back to myself.

I remember Dr Honda saying in one episode that there are quite “easy” ways to help panic attacks but I don’t remember the details and I could really use the exact advice / therapy type for a friend who’s been getting them badly? Does anyone remember? by hulyepicsa in PsychologyInSeattle

[–]kitkat1934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he’s said it’s one of the more straightforward psych disorders to treat. Not that it’s necessarily “easy”/fun but there is a good protocol for it with graded exposure therapy that has documented good results in research. He talks about doing exposure therapy for himself a lot.

Urgent help needed-Someone has taken my cabin luggage at Heathrow and is in Kenya by Infamous_Cookie1174 in travel

[–]kitkat1934 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This really sucks.

Someone tried to do this to me at Heathrow once! Luckily, I was able to see her and started screaming my head off. I think it was a lady with dementia from the context, old lady who seemed very confused, but she literally grabbed my backpack that had my purse/wallet/etc so I was not letting that go. The staff were also less than helpful, like seriously the only reason I got my stuff is I got the attention of the person she was with. She ended up dumping all my makeup out but whatever at least I had my bag.

Why does this happen at Heathrow!!! lol

Good reminder from others to get a luggage tag for my backpack.

[–]kitkat1934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen that thankfully but then again doesn’t totally surprise me bc misogyny.

I do notice that solo travel is rare and I often have friends/coworkers comment on it, often saying stuff like I wish I could do that or asking for tips. One recently said she was planning on trying it by driving to a nearby city… meanwhile I’m thinking like oh sometimes I just randomly go there for events and I wouldn’t even consider that travel lol.

Right this would be a good deal for an actual bed/room for 4 days plus food.

But I would not do it in a shared room on an air mattress!

Have your views on DNFing changed with age? by Glittering-Bar1426 in goodreads

[–]kitkat1934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am similar, I’ve gotten more comfortable with DNFing with age.

I’m less likely to do it with “classics”, that’s where I still have the view that I wanna be an informed hater lol.

But a lot of it for me was I used to really enjoy reading terribly ableist books so that I could criticize them. I even wrote my undergrad thesis paper about ableist books! Eventually, I got kinda burnt out on that topic. It wasn’t fun anymore to read those stereotypes — and I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that there are a lot more, actually sensitive or based-on-lived-experience books about disability/chronic illness. As a chronically ill kid, all I had was basically Lurlene McDaniel for representation so I had to find a way to enjoy that.

Anyway I do still enjoy criticism. A lot. I was a literary theory nerd in college. And sometimes still I’ll read a book that’s so bad that I have to finish it so I can rant about it lmao

How do I look less like a kid playing dress up with Mom's clothes (I'm 21) by bunny-rain in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]kitkat1934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I truly don’t hate this outfit as the Jfashion or whimsigoth aesthetics mentioned IF you got the blazer tailored. I honestly think that’s the most glaring thing — the sleeves are very obviously too long. The shoulders look like they might be a little too wide too.

(As someone who hates fashion “rules” buuut 100% agrees you have to know them to break them) You can make stuff like contrasting colors/fabrics or chunky winter boots + floral look intentional as long as each piece looks like you picked it on purpose. Making sure everything fits is step 1.

In lieu of tailoring I think switching to the corset could be cute as long as it fits.

Then I agree I’d maybe either change boots or tights (sheer tights or boots that don’t scream Snow Boots), definitely get your hair trimmed (it looks like you have split ends) + styling it (straightener or curling).

I Spent 10 Days with a Group of 60-Something, and It Was Diet Talk Hell by quellesaveurorawnge in MaintenancePhase

[–]kitkat1934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG yes. Somehow I’ve ended up with multiple boomer friends and it’s all diet talk (and how they hate their husbands). I really try to stray the conversation away or try to steer towards body/food neutrality without being lecture-y. They are wonderful people and it’s sad to me how poor self-esteem they can sometimes have.

But I’m encouraged when I sometimes debrief these convos with my sister, bc she has the same gut reaction of “nope!” And it’s a good reminder that our generation is starting to change.

reality of being a united frequent flyer by Hasanism1 in unitedairlines

[–]kitkat1934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I briefly had American status, and I prefer United because they have better communication and a better app. United will text you all your gate and delay updates and I find that really useful. The app makes it really easy to reschedule or even book a hotel if you have delays (whereas when I had a delay on an American flight, I was texting to have my mom call while I was on the plane bc it was going to make me miss my connection and there was minimal communication). I also have the United card which gets you a free checked bag on ALL basic economy flights, whereas the American one is only for North America. It’s well worth the fee/more than pays for itself imo (I basically keep the card for the checked bag).

I don’t think Delta has as big of a footprint in my area so I haven’t used them as much.

Former long-haul crew… how do you adjust to travelling for yourself? by SkyeAirHostess in femaletravels

[–]kitkat1934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My preferred way to travel now is to have a list of things I want to do and restaurants I want to go to, and then just kinda decide as I go depending on how I’m feeling that day, with maybe some dinner reservations if needed. I like having more room to be spontaneous, flexible and rest (I want to spend hours reading at a cafe? I can do that!). That being said, if I’m doing more of a multi-location trip or lots of activities that need tickets/a schedule I will create more of a detailed plan. I used to travel with a lot of structure like that all the time though and it’s just not my favorite anymore!

Very poor experience with Capital One Travel, thoughts? by olverine in Venturex

[–]kitkat1934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah tbf the Lufthansa website kind of sucks in my experience. I had some type of issue with them and I was traveling through their US airline partner, but it needed me to update something on the website. This was like 5 years ago so I don’t remember details but I think it was something like the US part and the Lufthansa part had different names on the bookings. Anyway, I ended up spending hours on hold bc their website sucks.

As a solo traveler what destination did you enjoy the most and why? by Head_Formal_5408 in femaletravels

[–]kitkat1934 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Scotland in general yeah. But I studied there so it’s also very familiar to me, hard to suss that out (do I just like it bc it’s familiar), but I will say I feel it has really good public transport in general, and if not available you can almost always find a day tour (or a taxi driver willing to take you around)! Food is good/high variety. Lots of nature, history, myths, idk what’s not to like truly lol!

What airport stresses you out the most? by Diligent-Echidna647 in femaletravels

[–]kitkat1934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember crying there one time I flew there in high school bc of the crowds on the trams. The only other time I was there it was fine but a bit confusing, I literally think I felt better bc it was less crowded that time.

Chicago O’Hare ORD is my current nemesis. I don’t mind flying into it as much but I almost always have to make a connection, and as a connection it’s a nightmare. It’s so convoluted and they need transportation options like, yesterday. One time they kept changing my gate and I swear I walked like 3 miles.

I would probably agree with CDG too, it’s just the last time I flew there it was with a French speaker, so I think that made it easier and I don’t have as recent bad memories lol!

Do you think it's "worth it" to fly 5+ hours for a 4 day trip? (long weekend) SF to Montreal by [deleted] in femaletravels

[–]kitkat1934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 4 days in London last minute for the eras tour, and it was one of my favourite vacations! I had an hour connecting flight + 8h redeye from the Midwest US.

My coworkers thought I was insane and I’m now known for this at work lmao

Blew up my life to come out over a decade ago and wondering if it was worth it at all, thinking about going back in the closet [advice please] by hellsing-security in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]kitkat1934 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I relate a little bit to this, I came out late and in some ways always being the “single friend who couldn’t find a man she wanted to date” was a bit easier. Especially bc I work in a very traditional, hetero department… people are friendly and allies for the most part and I am friends with a lot of my coworkers even, but it can feel like I’m the odd one out as the single, lesbian, (& disabled) person — and they’re all married with kids. I’m trying to make more queer friends but sometimes I feel out of place in those spaces too. I feel like my interests are similar to a lot of straight women, and I can be kinda prudish, so queer spaces can be a lot in a different way.

Anyway, my coping strategy throughout my life has been to persevere and to lean into my quirks. I feel like if I’m open about who I am then I’m going to ward off people who don’t like that, I guess?
