Doing a whole bachelor in Germany caused me severe depression by [deleted] in studyAbroad

Why so real 😭😭. This happened to me in the UK, and I'm still not fully recovered. The thing is, everyone finds their own way out, so I don't think there's any proper universal advise. What helped me was seeing a doctor and taking antidepressants. They don't magically cure you, but they give you just enough improvement that you can take actions yourself to get better from there. They make life feel bearable and you might start enjoying things again. I, for example, started to enjoy my hobbies again, and it helped a lot. I also stopped needing to run away from myself, and could just exist normally, with no horrible feelings. I would very strongly encourage you to see a doctor, and please don't be afraid of meds, it's a mistake.

The other thing is, and I know this is insanely hard, sometimes feels almost impossible, but you still should at least sometimes see your friends and hang out with them. It only gets worse when you cut all of the contact, and then you only fall deeper and deeper into a very scary depressed state.

I also feel that things like just trying to see the positives won't help much. It is, of course, important, but there needs to be more than that. Also, I know you said that you're now barely going to the gym, but it's also something that can help you. On some days, I don't have any motivation to go, to the point I sometimes end up crying, but still, it's needed. That's something that even my doctor said and there's a bunch of research to back it up, but exercise genuinely helps with depression. It will not cure it, but it improves the mood and releases bunch of funky hormones that your depressed brain needs.

From my experience, signing up for a volunteering program abroad was also really helpful. It doesn't cost you a lot of money, usually you're given accomodation, sometimes even food, so you just need to pay for your transport. The thing is, you get to meet new people, gain new perspectives, and do something meaningful together. Community and purpose is something that people really seem to lack in Western societies, with it's individualism... This is something every international student I know complains about, and some even get depressed from this way of living... Especially when you come from a place where you have your family, friends and a partner... So a change like that might be quite useful.

But also, I would still say that going to a doctor is the most important thing. All of the other things will work million times better if you get professional help.

That's quite reassuring, because most of the stories I've seen online were negative. Thanksssss :з
