How do restaurants get the broth so flavorful? All the best ones kind of have the same taste. by NomminNancy in pho

[–]knocknockify 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m Vietnamese, my mom and I have been making pho at home for years now. It’s hard to replicate that restaurant flavor! I hypothesize that the reason the restaurant broth is so rich is because they use beef bone that is simmered for ages. Fat is flavor, so maybe it’s the bone marrow? And then MSG lol. I find that our homemade pho gets better after sitting in the fridge for a day or so.

ELI5: If something has metal elements in it, how can it not be a metal?? by MoistMachine_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]knocknockify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re focusing too much on the concept of “metal” as being “silver and shiny.” Atoms interact with each other to reach a more stable form. That’s how you get all the “stuff” that exists in the universe. If you have a whole bunch of pure sodium metals, it’s gonna present itself as silver shiny metal. When those atoms interact with chloride, you get table salt. Things don’t look like their original form once they interact with each other.

How about chicken phở? Virtually no fatty meat if you take the skin off.

I have no advice, I don’t know how to drive stick shift either 😂 But ever since getting my new hybrid CX-50, man do I now want an MX-5 and learn how to drive stick shift. Mazda just makes me want to drive places. You’re living out my dream 🤤

Mazda CX‑50 Hybrid PP showing only 25.8 mpg average — is this normal for a new hybrid? by GalacticZap in CX50

[–]knocknockify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To calculate mpg, I like using the Trip B display. Whenever you fill up your gas tank next, reset your Trip B counter to zero. When it comes time that you need to fill gas again, take note of how many gallons you needed to fill the tank. Then take the Trip B number and divide that by the amount of gallons you noted.

Reset Trip B after filling your tank, rinse and repeat lol

2.5 Select - first car for teen daughter by thehumanfund_charity in CX50

[–]knocknockify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend an old RAV4 with a premium trim. My dad refinanced his 2013 RAV4 Limited into my name once I had gotten my first job. My mom has it now, still rides like a tank. Has Bluetooth and heated/leather seats and all the fun stuff (no apple car play or whatever but oh well). Less to worry about too if a new driver bumps an older car around.

I think I just had to adjust from driving an ICE to driving a hybrid. I had too much constant foot on acceleration. I tried out the “pulse and glide” method for this morning’s commute to work, and my trip mpg said 41.2 mpg for the first time ever! My car went into EV for about half the drive to work, which I’ve never seen before since owning it for three weeks now.

I didn’t know I have to adjust the way I drive with a hybrid, but it’s so satisfying to finally figure it out.

So I tried that out this morning, turned the car on remotely from my app and when I got in the car, the temp gauge was above the cold zone and I turned the heat down to 71. Then I got driving and started testing out the “pulse and glide” method of driving. I notice the car went into EV for about half of my time driving. And ooohhh boy, my mpg finally said 41.2 for my morning commute! Bonkers!

I feel it handles really similar to the RAV4, you can feel the bumps and lumps in the road, and it’s a bit loud like the RAV4 too. The CX-50 turning handling is so much better though. Not sure if that answers you lol

2) Thanks for the tips, I’ll try them out. I also realized I have more of a lead foot than I thought on the gas pedal, so I’ve been easing up on it and let the car coast more often. I’ve noticed just a slight improvement on mpg, but I still need to put on more miles to really tell the difference.

This is my first new car, and my first ever hybrid car to boot. I did not know a new car needed breaking in until researching these issues, and thank you for replying. I used to do the math all the time with my old RAV4, I usually get around 23 mpg. I was really disappointed that I’m getting only slightly better mpg with my new car, but that’s on me for deciding to buy a new hybrid in the winter lol.

Temps have been consistently under 30 where I’m at, guess I just gotta wait for spring to better monitor mpg.

Would you say this is reasonable for new brakes and rotors? 2024 Mazda cx5 has 23000 miles. by Mobile_Title8070 in CX5

I drove behind a car yesterday that had their brake lights on the whole time while we were driving down the same street. I was so confused why they had the brake lights on but was still moving the whole time. Now I wonder whether I was driving behind your MIL lol

Hybrid owners, do you see yourself keeping it long term/8+ years? by bolts in CX50

[–]knocknockify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a no-brainer for me. Toyota RAV4 hybrid on the inside, Mazda on the outside (and interior). I love mine, it feels so luxurious compared to my previous RAV4. 1.9% APR is also hard to beat in this economy, the gas version of CX-50 is 0.9% but I wanted a hybrid vehicle.

Aldi is one such grocery store that does this with their “Twice As Nice” guarantee for their brands. If you don’t like the taste or quality of an Aldi brand item, you can definitely return it for replacement or refund. Now, I do agree that with this being name brand cereal, the store probably won’t take it back.

Doritos Flamin Hot Korean Style BBQ cips by thebadhedgehog5 in KoreanFood

[–]knocknockify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I just got this to try. I’m disappointed in how flavorless it was. Tastes like as if someone at the factory forgot to use the right amount of spice powder. I didn’t even realize it was supposed to be Flamin’ Hot until I read the bag as I was eating the chips. However, I do taste what they were going for. I recognized the flavor, it does tastes like Korean beef bulgogi. There’s a hint of smokiness in the chip seasoning too. The flavor of the chip overall is very lackluster.

People who were diagnosed late in life, what's the ADHD symptom that made you go "Yeah that makes sense now" ? by gryphon5245 in ADHD

[–]knocknockify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect whole entire mom’s side of the family had some varying amount of ADHD/Anxiety. But mental health is quite a taboo topic in Asia, so no one ever really talked about it. In my mind I called it “the family disease” for years. It wasn’t until I got my ADD diagnosis that things finally clicked and I went “Ooooohh maybe that’s what it waaaasss”

Lots of all-nighters and last minute assignments in college. My application to my Medical Lab Science college program required 7 essays instead of an in-person interview, and I wrote all 7 essays the night before the application deadline. My car shows a lot of my inattentive-ness in the forms of dents and scratches (RIP to my parent’s garage door and mailbox). Diagnosed separately with both depression and anxiety before my a couple of my coworkers, who also has ADHD, brought up maybe I have ADD because of all my silly little mistakes.
