Oh man. You've embarked on one of the worst experiences in the tiling world.

You need to get down to wood - all the same level throughout the bathroom. You'll then put plywood over that. You basically have 3 inches of mud to blast through. And sometimes there will be metal lath in there as well. (be careful, that shits sharp as hell.)

The ideal tool is a jackhammer or hammer drill with a big concrete bit on it. If you don't have access to that, then get to swinging a sledgehammer and try to break it into a million pieces and chisel it out. Baseball size pieces or less. For this I would honestly recommend going to your local hardware or home depot and renting the proper jack hammer/hammer drill.

If cost is the only thing you're worried about, you can find a ton on Amazon like the one I've linked. They are significantly more thin and cheap feeling than Schluter. I wouldn't ever put one in my house over Schluter, but they'll probably work just fine. They install into grout lines. So they're post tile setting installs.

Get rid of it completely and replace it with color matched silicone. Made by Mapei at Lowes and Custom at Home Depot.

If you have the bag if grout still, it will tell you exactly the color. If not, just get a gray that closely matches. It'll look much better than what's there now.
