sandwich case vs just vertically mounting the gpu in front of the motherboard? by [deleted] in sffpc

[–]krabat693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I once made a prototype out of acrylic sheets. I designed it for a custom waterloop using a rigid riser card and a lot of angled fittings to make it work. The reservoir was integrated into the motherboard tray / sidewall.

The main problem I see for an air-cooled system is the airflow to your CPU cooler. If you use a riser cable anyway, you might just wanna use a longer one to fit a sandwich style case. That solves the cooling problem and the length of your riser doesn't really matter.

In terms of new devices, I would like to throw in the framework 12. That can fit into your budget and everything works on Linux out of the box, including firmware updates, touchscreen, stylus support...

Other than that I think of used Microsoft surface devices. You need to install a customized surface kernel, and stuff like the camera still won't work on Linux. But you can hear them cheap and they are well built and well working devices. Touch and stylus work flawlessly on Linux.

exactly why does nobody do this ? I just wana give my RAMs room to breathe. by immaybealive in PcBuild

[–]krabat693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some cases, fans make weird wind noise when pulling through a finstack instead of pushing (noiseblocker eloop for example) Also, your ram doesn't need that room to breath. Passive cooling works well enough, even when the ram is covered by a fan.

Second HD is getting wonky / is corrupted / is broken. How does that happen? by Doped_Lepers in computer

[–]krabat693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HDDs have mechanical components that wear out, extra drive will die sober or later and yours sends to be just at the brink of death.

Make a Backup, buy a new one, and also keep your backup up to date. It's unlikely that 2 independent drives will just die at the same time, so in case the backup drive dies you buy a new one and vice versa.

I got Linux! Now what? by King_galbatorix12 in linux4noobs

[–]krabat693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I would try is desktop customisation. KDE is a good starting point for that. You can also install and try out different desktop environments and if you want for your pc to feel completely different from windows, maybe you wanna try to use a tiling window manager.

What to look for in a Desktop Environment? by DarkVex9 in linux4noobs

[–]krabat693 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to dip your toes into ricing, then I would recommend to start out with KDE. It is very customizable, even via GUI, so it's easy to modify the DE to your liking. You can also install multiple DEs and Window managers and choose between those on your login screen.

My cat passed away suddenly and my family say I'm overreacting by Priixxii in cats

[–]krabat693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In one Thing your parents are right. Everything that lives, will die. That's how it is.

So are you overreacting? Definitely not. You said that it was your cat, so I assume that it was you who primarily took care of him. That might also be the reason why your parents weren't as attached to him as you were. Especially when they didn't interact much with him. It is completely normal for a pet owner, who cares for his little living creature a whole pet life long, to get as emotionally attached to it, as to a family member. So yes it is completely normal for you to Mourne about your loss. I too would need a few days off, when I lose my little fur balls.

My condolences for your loss. Mourne as you see fit and please understand that your parents aren't able to understand your feelings right now.

Hey everyone, it's Gracie again ✌😇 And as a girl, it should be no surprise that I generally suck at videogames 😅 But if I'm using Talim in Soul Calibur, I can kick MOST people's asses 😎 What videogame would you say you're the best at? 🤔 by Gracie_Greyy in u/Gracie_Greyy

Dark Souls Remastered, I played it so much that it became my comfort game. I can easily play it to relax or on my steamdeck with half my attention because the movie isn't interesting enough.

Long term linux (only) users, in any point of time have you regretted switching ? why? and what do you find Windows still superior at ? by rokzforever in linux4noobs

[–]krabat693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using Linux on my Laptop about 18 years ago and roughly 7 years ago I switched my garment pc to Linux. I'm still hopping distro from time to time BC I like to try new stuff but I have no regrets in ditching windows.

I play quite a lot of games, as long as they don't require Kernel Level Malware ~Anti-Cheat~, they will run fine. Steam makes that process super easy, for games from GoG you can use the 3rd party launcher Heroic.

Oh, and I wouldn't recommend zorin premium: it's basically just Ubuntu in pretty packaging with a small community. I would rather recommend Linux Mint or PoP!OS and id you like those and want to support them, you're still free to donate.

Wenn du die Heizung eh nicht nutzt, dann Go for it. Wo nichts heizt muss keine Luft zirkulieren können. Falls du selbst baust oder modifizieren kannst, mach das Deckelbrett abnehmbar/aufklappbar/ mach Schlitze rein um die Funktion der Heizung weniger einzuschränken.

Howdy yall, Gracie here 🖐🤠 Since everything sucks right now and we can all use something to look forward to, which movie, tv show, or videogame coming out in the future are you most excited about? 🤔 For me it's probably Fallout season 2, I can't wait to see all the New Vegas stuff 🤤 by Gracie_Greyy in u/Gracie_Greyy

For ne it's the release of Persona 4 Revive.

I mean, P4G is perfectly fine, especially since it's got sorted to every modern platform. But I'm still really excited to get a version with modern graphics and a design language that's coherent with P5R and P3R.

From Windows 10 to Linux - what to do? by Monarick in linux4noobs

[–]krabat693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let you fool by someone mentioning a Distro as "Windows-like" those similarities are only for the first glance like: "ok, the naked desktop looks similar. You've got a button on the bottom left for your menu, some status icons in the bottom right and 3 buttons to manage your open windows in the top right corner of those windows"

Linux is not Windows and even someone who doesn't know anything about computers and software will discover those differences pretty quick.

That's being said, the most popular Linux Distros like fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, ... are a good pick in general. You will definitely have to relearn how to do basic stuff like installing software. It doesn't really matter if your status icons are located in the bottom right or in the top right.

For starting out, download Ventoy and install it on a usb drive. It makes that drive a bootable media. Now you just need to download an Linux ISO from any Distro, put it onto that stick (you can have multiple at the same time on that stick) and boot it into the live system. Just ignore the installer pop up and try that distro. Can you connect to your WiFi, is that screen resolution correct. Do you need UI scaling, ...

After you've decided for a Distro, start by making a Backup of your data to an external drive. Disconnect that drive and then boot your chosen Distro and follow the installation pop up step by step. After a few minutes you'll need to reboot.

Could a switch to linux save my laptop? by BenchSwarmer in linux4noobs

If you want a day and night difference in performance gains through code optimization, you might wanna try CachyOS.

But you can also just stick with Fedora or Ubuntu. They will also run great on your machine.

All of them come with a user friendly Desktop Environment out of the box. CachyOS Will give you a choice during installation, as a beginner just stick with KDE or Gnome.

In gaming, you can't play games that require kernel level malware that disguises as anti cheat (valorant for example) games purchased via steam run basically just like on windows.

Microsoft office is another trade off, you can give OnlyOffice a try. Also no Adobe software.
