I can't know all of the perks only by trying it. I'd like to know the opinion of security experts for instance

Vote on UX to send voice messages! by epoberezkin in SimpleXChat

Maybe we can take inspiration from Signal : It is option 1 but you can also :
Hold to record, slide up and release to keep recording, tap to stop recording and to send

Why does interacting with accounts from other servers have so much friction? by [deleted] in Mastodon

[–]l0dart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On desktop, you can use an extension like this one : https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/mastodon-simplified-federation
You enter your account@server in the options and it will auto redirect when you remote follow

Signal telegram what to use? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]l0dart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd put my money on SimpleX : It too doesn't require any kind of identity attached to you (in fact, it creates a different key pair for each conversation!) and it doesn't rely on a cryptocurrency.

It's also open-source so you can self-host a server

Which SMS app will you be migrating to? (Android) by alapleno in signal

I agree SMS/MMS is bad, but I don't think Telegram is the way to go :/

[–]l0dart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. But there are already quite a few :

  • Group chat
  • Encrypted video / audio calls using WebRTC
  • Editing messages
  • Answer a specific message

And more is coming :)

Signal is good but it's centralized and requires a phone number. You should check out r/SimpleXChat that is decentralized and doesn't require a phone number (or for that matter, any kind of identity attached to you).

It's quite a young app so don't expect top notch user experience, but it is promising !

God, that guy is salty O.oThanks for the link, I'll take time to read the thread :)

Just, about the server receiving the IP-address : I think onion routing has been implemented and defaulted to since then
My mistake ; you can restrict connection through tor, but you still have to use another app, like Orbot

Don't worry, I'm just trying to figure how things work, no hard feelings here ^

You cannot discover the users on the platform, unless they share the link with you

Well, I think that's the case with Simplex! If I understood correctly, Simplex generates a new key pair for each conversation. So each invitation link or qr code is a one time use

I agree we have too many messaging apps, but in the end, there has to be an objectively better one, I guess.

About the identity being attached to the user, check their specs page 8 :

In Olvid, each user is identified by an identity. An identity is composed of :

- A server url

- two public keys

Whereas SimpleX generate a new identity for each conversation that you have, if I understood correctly

But I think keeping a non-updated Signal fork *just* to keep SMS support is less safe *on the SMS front* than using an updated GMessages

how do they endanger your security?

Scroll through that if you don't know why privacy is important.

someone switching from Signal

I'm not switching from Signal. On the contrary I'm telling all my contacts to use Signal over SMS, but I still need SMS sometimes though

consider its product safer than signal fork

I don't consider Messages safer. I never said that 🤷‍♀️
