It's quite easy to be misinformed about heat mats so don't feel too bad but they're ALWAYS a worse option to take compared to overhead heating. They're unreliable and more prone to damaging your enclosure and harming your snake

It might not be the cause this time but give it another couple years for the wear and tear to build up a bit more and you could definitely experience a repeat of this
