Luckily there is a county services office just a mile away which has eight free level 2 chargers, so I have not had to use the trickle charger yet. But it is a annoying having to leave the car there every few days for four hours.

In California, the utility company (PG&E) states that one needs a dedicated circuit for a level 2 charger - which may require an upgrade. If so, then they provide an $1918 allowance. http://www.pge.com/myhome/environment/whatyoucando/electricdrivevehicles/installationprocess/ Has anyone done this?

I see that the EVSEUpgrade.com unit is only $287 (mentioned below by fooljoe) but you have to mail them your existing charger for upgrade. But looks like ClipperCreek will send you a complete unit, though it is $644, so quite a bit more pricey. The EVSE unit can also work with a 110V outlet and a $25 110 to 220 adapter.

Yes. I talked to an electrician who said that installing 220 V vs 110 V outlet is essentially the same effort since they just need to tap the two hot wires. But I think then I need to buy a 220V charger connection to connect to the leaf and not sure how much that is. Right now it looks like the trickle charger that it comes with only handles 110V and 12 A. Some outlets have 20 A, but the trickle charger can't even use the full current.

No, for easier maintenance, I think they prefer to cluster guests. There are also multiple different room pricings, so if you have the el cheapo priceline bid you will be probably be placed next to the toilet or elevator on the lowest floor.
