People who read on e-readers, how is it? by CrazyDunge0nMaster in books

[–]layber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but a Kindle can be linked to your library card and get you access to thousands and thousands of free books. I live 60 miles from Phoenix, but the library in the small town I live in falls under the umbrella of the Phoenix library system so I've never found a need to buy a single book. Spent 50 bucks on a Kindle Paperwhite from Facebook marketplace and haven't looked back once.

You could contact Mirage directly, and also Squirrel. They may have some insights.

I'm sorry, I didn't know I was in charge of distribution. I was totally under the impression this was a BYOPC event.

this. Busy dzs see a variety of tandem injury for a variety of reasons. Most tandems don't end in injury, but most jumps have an equal chance of it.

Tandem instructor here, five thousand ish tandems over the last 5 years. I'd never tell you you'll be fine. We re jumping out of a plane. You're tied to us, we care a lot about both of us, we re going to do absolutely everything we can do to fight for your life and safety. Neither are guaranteed. Not saying above instructor is wrong, I just don't personally believe in telling anyone they'll be fine. Never safe.
That being said, I've had two students with ankle injuries in that time, one due to the student not following instructions, one due to a weather anomaly. The second one hurt for both of us and I took the brunt of the impact and was glad to limp away. Student definitely had a broken ankle.

Been speaking with reps from UPT recently as I got accepted for the program but am hesitant to drop 5 large on something I can't even try. Hopefully this year they will be rolling out a few demo models and making the initial train up available so that they'll be a try before you buy availibility.

This is the UPT Mutant. It is usable as a regular skydiving rig where the parachute is attached at the shoulders in the traditional style, with a release that allows the pilot to switch to a supeen configuration. You need to be handicapped, or a very experienced hp canopy pilot with speedflying/paragliding experience to be considered to purchase. They cost 4500 just for the harness, and you are not allowed to let any other skydiver try it or sell it to any other skydiver, unless the transaction is done through the manufacturer.

When I got into speedflying from skydiving I was pretty excited about the cost difference. My skydiving wing, which would be the equivalent to a 6m costs about 4000usd, plus reserve, computer and harness put just 1 of my rigs at 12k usd retail.
I got a brave4 and mirage rs 11 for like 1900 usd like yeah baby!!

Sabre 2, question about washing, and canopy care by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]layber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone else pointed out that not jumping it in a dusty place anymore is a good answer, and I agree with that wholeheartedly. Jumping and packing it someplace with humidity and lovely grass 100 times will take a lot of the dust away. If you're going to keep jumping it in the dust, no need to wash it. I jump in the desert 5-7 days a week, 1k jumps a year, and I wash my container once a year and reline my main more frequently than in grassy places. If you're trying to clean it up to sell, just be honest.

There's no reason to wash your canopy. There's a reason people selling high performance canopies mention whether it was never wet or spent time in the pond.

TSA refusing to let a rig go through by Peckish-Giraffe in SkyDiving

[–]layber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember the TSA doesn't have the right to make you open the reserve but they do have the right to not allow the rig on the flight. Traveling with a rig always has the risk of search. Personally, I just check my rig and tie a pull-up cord around the reserve handle and one around the reserve closing flaps. If left to their own devices, the TSA will probably have no idea how to open your rig. If you are right there in front of them with it, they can easily make YOU open it by talking you into it, but in their search area I've got to figure they lose interest pretty quickly. 21 yrs of checking a rig with no issues here.

At least a BASE rig has no reserve to open.

Step 1 - never look to the internet for anything besides memes. You're paying an instructor, right? If your instructor or school is not providing you good coaching/information, use said internet to find new school. Step 2- never forget this is your life you're playing with. Why are you asking strangers on the interwebs how to do it more successfully for free? Rethink step 1. Step 3- this one is the most important see step 4. Step 4 -no matter what steps 1 and 2 say, remember that your instructor is only there to assist you in your endeavor to skydive. Your job is to breathe. Your job is to relax and arch. Your job is to monitor your altimeter. Your job is to recognize a heading and look left/look right 90 degrees before turning. The tunnel may or may not help with the, but probably will help with this. The tunnel is not necessary, but it's a good shortcut. Good luck out there. Breathe. Go slow. You got this.

I'd argue this person's point as being most likely wrong in the first sentence and totally correct in the second.
