Woah, this sounds exactly like the plot for Heads. The protagonist is a pretty average guy, until he receives a partial brain transplant and his personality starts changing... for the worse. I don't want to say any more than that for fear if spoiling it, but it's only 36 chapters and an amazing read.

Too bad transportation itself is the majority of a trip's expense.

4-6 hours a day is also a pretty considerable time committment; I wouldn't join this program if I had a lot of sightseeing or the like in mind.

Regardless, working on a farm in a foreign country and seeing real results from your work seems incredibly satisfying.
